Favorite Team and Titles
Has your favorite team won a title in your lifetime that you specifically remember? (not one that happened when you were two). Note, the question pertains to your absolute one favorite team that if you could only root for one team in all sports, this would be the team.

I remember the Dolphins winning the AFC in '82 and '84. Were beat up in both Super Bowls.

No.
Indiana football? Favorite team since Marino retired. No titles of any sort in my lifetime. Veering off topic a bit: Indiana basketball? Won two years before I went there. Miami Dolphins - favorite team from 1983 until Marino retired? Nope. The Colts did win one time, but they were more my favorite team because of Peyton Manning more than just being my favorite team. But it doesn't matter, because Indiana football has been my true favorite team since the day that Marino retired. Last edited by Kodos : 01-12-2016 at 12:37 PM. |

The Mets won the World Series when I was 6. I don't recall it. They came close this year, but I'm not counting winning the NL as a 'title' .
My other teams - the Falcons (since I moved here in 2002), Newcastle United, Rutgers football haven't really come close.

Until 1991 the NY Football Giants were my favorite team and I saw them win 2. It was around 1991 that Syracuse basketball became my favorite team, and they won once, in 2003. (While the Giants won 2 more, which were incredible, but not technically my favorites anymore - any hey, the Yankees are 3rd and they have a couple!)

94 Razorbacks won while I was still in town. Probably the best celebration I'd every have for a team since we went and partied on campus all night.

I'm hoping to see another one or two in my lifetime, but that may not happen until Jerry dies and passes the team along to Stephen.

Growing up it was the Cowboys. Far and away. Graduated high school in 96 so...high school was a good run. After college my one team has been....you guessed it. Last night was as close Ive seen there. Of course they did win a title when I was 3. But wasnt a fan then... |

I got to spend my teens watching Jordan and the Bulls win 6.
So I'm good.

I think I've told this story before.
Georgia Tech's 1990 UPI title came while I was working at a radio station that was a UPI member/affiliate. While it was all (then) fancy & high speed ink jet stuff, the copy still printed up on rolls of paper just like the old-school wire copy machines in the movies. I was actually working when the poll was released. Heard the bell ring in the next room (knowing that their poll was due anytime) and ran to the printer ... the page had scrolled over just far enough that I could see from the bottom up #25 through ... #3. Yeah, my hand might have shook as I reached to reveal the rest. Real slow-motion moment.

Hahahahahaha. *sigh*
The Detroit Lions are pretty much the only team I root for. ..back in '90, whenI was 18 and still followed basketball, I got nosebleed seats (the wooden benches literally pressed against the back of the arena at the top of the stair lanes) for what turned out to be the final game of the 1990 NBA Finals, between my favorite teams the Blazers and the Pistons, won on a last-second shot by Vinnie 'The Microwave' Johnson. That's probably as close as I'm going to get (literally and figuratively) to any kind of championship action.

This one's hard for me, since I am pretty much evenly split between the Red Wings and the Lions.
The Wings have won 4 Stanley Cups, all within the last 20 years, and I was 23 when they won their first, so they all count. I saw them win the Cup live in 1998 against the Capitols. The Lions, well... I did watch them win their one and only playoff game in 59 years!

UNC Basketball in 82, 93, 05, and 09. I was only 5 in 82 and don't really have vivid memories of that one, though I know I was watching w/ my family live.
I was a Lakers fan in the 80s (more specifically I idolized Magic Johnson). I was no longer a Lakers fan during the Shaq/Kobe years. At this point I haven't watched a college basketball game in 3 years, so if UNC wins another title I probably wouldn't even "claim" it. I do feel as invested in Carolina Panthers football right now as much as I ever did in UNC, minus the life or death feeling that came along with it at as a younger kid of course. |

Some of you are cheating, claiming to have four or more different favorite teams. Try being a fan of a soccer team that isn't the local equivalent of the New York Yankees.

+1 sort of. Honestly, those years were so great I don't need to see another championship for myself. I'm more saddened by players like Romo and Witten more than likely never having a chance to experience a championship despite their hard work and great seasons for the team. |

Edmonton Oilers won a bunch of titles before I was old enough to realize/appreciate just how good they were.
Blue Jays, well, those were fun years but my favorite has to be the Seahawks win. I was spoiled as a kid between the Oilers and Jays, the Seahawks were really the first time I got to experience the heart break first, then really enjoy the ride when they finally got their first SB.

'92 & '93 Blue Jays. '95, '00 and 2003 Devils. I don't have a favorite basketball team. And I'm a Jets fan, so no Super Bowls probably ever. But it's okay. Forgot about Port
I don't really play the "2nd favorite team" bullshit either. I will obviously sympathize with a second team if there's a compelling reason, but it's weird for me to root for more than one team in a particular sport. Doesn't feel right. But there are instances where I think it can make sense, like you grew up with a team but then moved somewhere entirely different. Or one was your dad's favorite team or something. No different to me than players who change teams these days. But yeah the soccer thing is different, for sure. Forgot about Portland Timbers this year, but not a rabid fan, though I was a supporter back when they were still in the USL. Last edited by Young Drachma : 01-13-2016 at 07:26 PM. |
