Easy one for me, although I am sad to see Neil Young/Crazy Horse go. John Lennon alone is so overrated. His only good solo song was How Do You Sleep?

Solo Lennon is pretty solid. You may not like the more "mainstream radio" hits Imagine or Instant Karma but what about Woman, Watching the Wheels, Nobody Told Me, Just like Starting Over? Him and McCartney's solo careers could be top 50 all time without any Beatles songs.

Look forward to a potential Foreigner/Beatles match up.

I'm gonna need someone to make a 90s-current poll so that I know what's going on other than remembering one song a band from the 70s did.

I see I've have reached the first "who the fuck?" moment: The Arcana

For whatever it's worth, the internet seems to agree that these folks are obscure, at best. How did they make this list (and at 100 spots above Neil Young)?

Pity that #233 wasn't the more talented John Waite.

I like a handful of Y&T songs, that would certainly give them the nod over many groups in this contest. Especially in Summertime.

That was my vote for Neil Young. There are probably 1-2 Beatles songs that I really like, which is less than the number of songs I like on just the Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere album.

You really have to be 'of a certain age' to know who Y&T are. They got some radio & MTV play for a couple years, and then were purged from public memory entirely. They're no Nitro.

While it was In Rock We Trust in '84 that broke them through, I still hold '83 album Mean Streak as their best work. I get the arguments that '82 was their best, with Black Tiger but I just don't think they'd quite hit their stride as well there.

Recent years have not been kind, only original member still alive is front man Dave Meniketti. Cancer taking bassist Phil Kennemore in 2011 was rough, then both drummer Leonard Haze and guitarist Joey Alves have gone in the past year or so.

This was my major takeaway from this round of the voting process. The one song that appears on Youtube (Ghostwriter) I actually like, but wikipedia has never heard of them, their website is garbage, and they've only ever released a single album. I am with thesloppy - how the hell are they even on the list, let alone ranked #152?

As for the rest of the group, I had a tough choice with The Pretenders and The Smiths, and am one of the rare few who isn't all that impressed with Lennon's solo work. Don't get me wrong - it is great - but especially as a keyboard player in a 60's band, I love me some Rod Argent. Nailing the organ solos in Time of the Season in a live show is still one of my proudest moments ever.

Actually much more rooted in the hard rock rather than hair tradition really.

The hit album in '84 was really the one place where they veered away from that ("Summertime Girls" is a good example of that). But songs like "Black Tiger" or "Mean Streak" from previous albums are better examples of where their sound was rooted. A sound that returned in 2010 with their last (so far) album.

Although in a different way musically, they'd fit into a category of "hard rock bands that happened to have success in hair band/hair metal era" like Great White.

Another thing that likely plays into how they're viewed today (by fans that have known their work for decades) is that Dave Meniketti seems to be one of the more all-around solid good guys from the era. I'm not sure off-hand if I've ever seen/heard a cross word said about him, there's generally a good vibe of respect for him.

For some that influence may be subconscious but for others of us I believe it's a conscious added plus in their column.

My dad opened for them a few times, and he says the only group that he enjoyed playing with more was Huey Lewis.

This is definitely spot on and like Jon says in the follow up post, genuinely good guys who mostly detached from the decadence that defined most bands of the 80's. The Great White comparison is pretty accurate and I would throw a group like the Scorpions in that mix too.

Reminds me more of early Def Leppard tbh. Not got the edge of Crue. Not bad at all, but a bit AOR/MOR

Oh, I do recall the chorus - but probably commercials or background music or something (I mean classic rock and hair bands the are new musak these days). You may hate me for this, but they sound like a cousin to Whitesnake (or a slightly 'harder' Bon Jovi).

You do hear a lot of classic rock in commercials now, which I guess is an attempt to pull the aging fanbase back to memories of younger years and make them want to buy the cars the music goes with.

They are kind of like a raw Bon Jovi I guess, though I never did like Whitesnake much. Outside of seeing Tawny Kitaen slither across David Coverdale's cars.

Check out the Quireboys (if googling might want to make sure the spelling is correct!) if you like Great White.

When I was young went to a gig with Skid Row opening, Great White second, and Motley Crue headlining. Went nuts for Skid Row, but drank too much Bacardi and ended up not well for Great White and missed them completely. Recovered in time for Crue and had a great time.

In retrospect it probably worked out perfectly

Man, I thought the Y&T reference would be at least slightly obscure, and now it's pretty much just a Y&T thread. I always thought they sounded like Van Hagar before Van Hagar existed.

Eh, the Whitesnake reference isn't terrible really. Both Jack Russell and David Coverdale had vocal influences from the 60s and 70s and those show up in their work.

The Bon Jovi reference however, no. Just ... no.

Of the 16 bands in this round, I'd take Y&T easily over all but 3-4.
And at least two of those would be narrow run things at best.

They didn't make the tournament either though...
