Mass shooting in Las Vegas

This is some crazy shit

And I'm not being flippant, I don't really know how else to describe it.

Sounds from video like at least a couple hundred rounds, full auto, heavy caliber. Unconfirmed report shooter was inside Mandalay Bay, possible from the 32nd floor.

Firing in the general direction (?) of a Jason Aldean concert that was underway outside.

Initial reports say 2 dead, up to 24 wounded, a dozen or so of those critically.

One shooter is "down" per LVPD,no other shooter believed involved at this point.

Wow. Just watched a vid of this. Any chance that wasn’t a military-grade weapon? (I guess it’s possible it was a modified semi, but wow.)

CBS News is now reporting that the gunman was shot and killed in a room on the 32nd floor and it appears that he opened fire from the window there.

Yeah.

It's interesting, in hindsight I guess. The first shaky concertgoer video I saw, as the filmer goes to the ground, she pans up the hotel. There's nothing said, nothing seen, but it wasn't like that's what was being filmed otherwise. I mentioned at the time how people often instinctively turn toward the direction of the shots, I guess that really was what happened in that clip.

Per latest reports the gunman is a 64-year-old male who lived in a retirement community and had no criminal record.

If the reports of how this went down are even remotely accurate, it seems almost inevitable that the death toll is going to increase from 20.

Just saw the attendance figure: an estimated 40,000 on hand for the festival/concert

As I told someone earlier -- who was now fretting about her husband having a business trip to LV soon -- what we have to simultaneously realize AND be in a bit of denial about is that this sort of thing could happen anywhere.

I'm a few miles from a crowd of 100k+ a half dozen times a year. I don't have to go anywhere to be close to a very attractive target. That's a hard reality, but it's reality.

We have friends who were there celebrating their son's 21st birthday (my daughter's teammate's family). She thinks they left yesterday afternoon though.

I'm supposed to be going to Vegas in 3 weeks for a conference.

Actually just got a text from the mom. They were on the runway leaving when it happened, they made the plane come back and everyone de-plane before leaving again. They just landed at home.

And, having now realized today's date ... a bit of an extra mindfuck to realize that I was in Vegas 24 yrs ago today, getting married.

The new reality of life in the US. I was in Vegas last week, I'll be there next week and the week after. Accept that you never know when your last day will be (or that of your family), and that to be free means that we can't let senseless acts of violence deter us from being acting on those freedoms. Doesn't mean it's still not scary as hell. The survivors are going to be dealing with mental trauma that is going to last for years. The whole thing is awful.

Is it sad my first thoughts upon seeing the news were:
I hope it's not black on white/white on black
How will Infowars say it's fake
How will Trump dick this up
This will somehow cause looser gun control laws

Yeah I read the article for this as well especially when I saw it was a country music concert. I shouldn't say thank god it's just a nutcase white guy but thank god it's just a nutcase white guy. It's crazy though it was Islamic terror we would bomb the middle east, if it was a black guy the country would be on the brink of civil war, since it's a white guy "What can you do? Shrug." I just recorded some show on Showtime about mass shootings last night leaves a pretty bad taste in my mouth to think about watching it anytime soon.

I'm amazed there wasn't more of a stampede.

Second thing I'm amazed of is how many people stopped to take cell phone video. No way I'd be doing anything but trying to get out of there and help others.

Whichever said he spun from, it's going to be used for points. We all know that.

The actually "thank God" case MIGHT be if he was "just" crazy as a bedbug.

Fuck that.. A human being just decided to end the lives of people who won't go home tonight to their family and loved ones. 50+ people. Dead, because he sucked at life and decided to end others before knowing his would end. I hate this world sometimes....

I said my piece on this topic on my own social media earlier

Quote:
A bit "stream of consciousness" here, but it's what I got on my mind so ... As police put it earlier "right now we have no idea what the shooter's belief system was".
He could be virtually anywhere on the political spectrum so -- and if you don't believe that, you're kidding yourself -- so no matter where he lands, I'd advise against getting too caught up in that even if it suits your own viewpoint.
It could every bit & just as easily have been the reverse.
And that's the truth whether you're left, right, or Pluto.

That having been said, I'm also a realist about how poorly heeded that advice will be.

We don't even know who this guy was yet I've already seen attacks & assumptions on both ends of the spectrum about the why/what of his actions.
And I don't mean on the broad social media at large, I mean in the confines of my own tiny social media world.

If his politics are left wing, it'll be spun as a godless liberal killing good God-fearin' conservative American country music fans.
If his politics are right wing, it'll be spun as the right's chickens coming home to roost on guns.

Let's not pretend that many of both sides of the political spectrum aren't chomping at the bit in hopes that something about the facts to come out fits their agenda.

Or all of these regardless of the facts on the case.

Yep. If you're that bad off that you want to kill innocent people, do everyone a favor and turn the gun on yourself before you hurt anyone else.

And both likely can be interpreted as "true" i bet. After all, some local police officer(s) might "know" him from being in a bar scuffle a few times or in the drunk tank or whatever. And they are "local authorities", after all the outlet reporting this will say. Doesn't mean he was on the radar of "the local authorities".

That's part of what's wrong with Journalism today, there is no baseline anymore for what is truth and what is "truth" (as in technically true).

There was a group of folks from Newburgh at he concert including the daughter of our divisional admin assistant. Luckily, many of them didn't like the last performer and left a little early.

Sadly, I've become numb to these events.

Thoughts and prayers do little to prevent or fix this.

It'll be forgotten when the next shooting occurs.

If a classroom of children being massacred doesn't force conversation, nothing will.

I see gun stocks are up though, business is booming.

Per multiple sources, ISIS has claimed responsibility and is claiming that the shooter converted to Islam months ago.

I don't have a narrative. I don't buy into either side of the BLM or "Cops Rule" nonsense. But you are living in another world if you think this story would be the same if it was an ISIS shooter or a black guy who wanted to kill white people. People on here get annoyed with me all the time but I'm sure they can tell you I subscribe to neither "sides" way of thinking.

Those last two statements show just how fucked up this country can be sometimes. People's first thought after this is that they need more guns because I can't believe it's a lot of first time buyers driving up stocks. After Sandy Hook with people claiming it was fake, I lost hope of change ever being made.

ISIS absolutely.
If the shooter had been a black american without radical islam ties, the story would go away much quicker. And not because I believe there is a media agenda, I just think news people are uncomfortable how to address that elephant without being racially insensitive and it doesnt drive ratings so they tend to ignore it quicker.
