Barry Powers: The Wonder from Down Under (RTTS)

Barry Powers: The Wonder from Down Under

Barry Powers is a tall, strong, outgoing, and all-round typical Aussie bogan. He is also extremely good at baseball.

He is miles ahead of his age group and is already built like a man. He comes from Geelong, Australia and grow up like any normal kid until he picked up a baseball bat at the age of 8 and from that day forward he hasn't looked back.

He has won the MVP award, hitting award etc in any competition he has played in. He has played for the under 16, under 18 and senior national teams already.

He had just turn 18 years old and coming off his second season with the Melbourne Aces in the Australian Baseball League. He played his first professional game at the young age of 16 and became a regular at center field for them at the start of his second season.

While he was out at the pub with his Aces' boys having an end of season drinking session his phone rang, it was his manager/dad Garry Powers. Garry had received a call from scouts over in the US, Barry has been invited to compete in the Topps Showcase 3 game series for the International Region.

Barry celebrated this great news by necking a pint!

Re: Barry Powers: The Wonder from Down Under (RTTS)

Topps Amateur Showcase: Game One

As he walked up to get his BP swings in he could hear two scouts talking between themselves. One had said to the other that they couldn't believe that some of the scouts thought this Powers kid could be the next best thing, calling him to a dumbed up hulk with bleached blonde hair, a typical Aussie bogan.

If Barry Powers wasn't motivated already to show the scouts what he was made off he sure was now.

It didn't take long for him to have a chance either as he came in at clean up with the bags loaded, none out in the bottom of the first. He thought to himself, this is it!

And with one swing of the bat he cleared the bases with a triple to the center field wall.

As Barry Powers slide into third he bounced up on the bag and pointed both fingers straight at the two scouts that had dissed him earlier while yelling "How you like that ladies!", this was Barry Powers, a confident, big mouthed, big bat, ball player from the land down under.

Re: Barry Powers: The Wonder from Down Under (RTTS)

Topps Amateur Showcase: Game Two

He had gone 2 from 5 in Game 1 and knew that he hadn't really done anything beside the base clearing triple. He knew what he didn't to do if he wanted to go in the first round.

Barry Powers was man of the game but he still wasn't happy! He hadn't manged to knock one over the wall yet and that is what he has been able to do since he was 14 years old. He has one more game to show the scouts the power he has.

Re: Barry Powers: The Wonder from Down Under (RTTS)

Topps Amateur Showcase: Game Three

He has been swinging the bat well and with 2 triples shown a little of his power but not all of it.

He also hadn't been able to show off his speed with only the one chance to steal a bag, which he did, and he hadn't had a single fly ball come his way.

For today's game he had one thing on his mind and that was crush a home run!

As he stepped to the plate knowing that this would be probably his second last chance to crush one he was locked in looking for a high fastball.

There was two on, two out and he had grounded into a double play in his first at-bat, the pressure would be building on almost anyone but not Barry Powers.

He rocked back and got that high fastball he was after on the first pitch.

He had hit the ball that hard it broke a part of the mega screen in right field as it crashed into it.... As he jogged around the bases he thought to himself, they must not have read the scouting report, as he laughed.

Re: Barry Powers: The Wonder from Down Under (RTTS)

The MLB First Year Players Draft

Garry Powers, his dad and manager, had assured Barry that he was going to be picked up in the early stages of round one.

Teams that had shown interest to draft Barry Powers in the early to mid picks in the first round were the White Sox, Phillies, Rays, Marlins, Blue Jays, Yankees, and the Athletics.

Barry's top choice was the Houston Astros with the 5th pick and then the Oakland Athletics with the 15th pick, but he really didn't care who drafted him. He just wanted to play as all of his life had revolved around baseball ( a little bit of drinking, girls, gym, and other typical bogan things).

Barry Powers was sliding down the board, the Phillies and White Sox had both said he was probably their top choice, probably probably being the key word. The Reds had pick 10 and had even talked to him, high chance they were one of the scouts he showboated to, they selected Joe Bardy.

FINALLY, Barry Powers had been drafted by a Major League team. This had been his dream from the first day he learnt about baseball.

He thought to himself, the Tampa Bay Rays - I guess I can play there. Little did he know that he would have to work his way up the ranks as not everyone thought he was as ready as he did.

Barry Powers was assigned to the Rays Double-A affiliate team the Montgomery Biscuits, even though he wasn't over the moon about this he did receive a nice signing bonus and his dad, Garry Powers, reminded him that once they see what he can do he will be in the BIGS before he knows it.

Re: Barry Powers: The Wonder from Down Under (RTTS)

Start of the 2015 Season

5 Game Series: vs Chattanooga Lookouts
(9th - 13th of April 2015)

Game One:

The day had come, Barry Powers was ready to unleash and show the America baseball fans that he was going to be something special, well more special then he already is.

Was his first at bat he got his first Double-A hit, not really impressive as it was a forced ground ball back up the middle but it was a hit.

It's the bottom of the 13th in the season opener scores tied 1-1, Barry Powers has two singles but in his last three AB's his has flied out, stuck out and grounded out, he stepped up to the plate....

IT'S RIGHT IN THE WHEEL HOUSE.......

IT'S A WALK OFF HOMER!!!!

What a game from Barry Powers, he goes 3 from 6 and wins the game with his first Double-A home run!

Re: Barry Powers: The Wonder from Down Under (RTTS)

Game Two:

Still riding the high from the ending to yesterdays game, Barry Powers is on king of the world, well maybe not world but of Montgomery at least.

Well not as exciting as last night but going 2 from 4 and getting the win is still pretty good. Barry Powers is seeing the ball extremely well to start the season, maybe a Triple-A call up might not be to far away if he keeps this up.

Game Three:

The manger decided the fans needed a break from the Powers overload, and has given his star center fielder the night off.

Biscuits lost 0 - 6

Game Four:

Fresh after last night off, Barry Powers is looking to smash a few more hits for the Lookouts fielders to chase after.

"Powers crushes a double down the line"

"Barry "Walk-Off" Powers, that is an RBI single to end the game!"

What can Barry Powers do wrong? Well heaps of things actually but on the baseball field and in the batters box he is almost GOD like. He goes 4 from 5, showing that he is more then just a power hitter with 3 singles and a nice corner tucked double. Oh and his second walk off in three games.

Game Five:

How do you top a game where you went 4 from 5 at bats? No dunno but Barry Powers does! This kid never stops out doing himself, and today he completed his first career cycle!

Everyone take note, Barry Powers is well on his way to the show!

Montgomery Biscuits win the series 3 - 2
