Barry Powers: The Wonder from Down Under (RTTS)

Barry Powers: The Wonder from Down Under

Barry Powers is a tall, strong, outgoing, and all-round typical Aussie bogan. He is also extremely good at baseball.

He is miles ahead of his age group and is already built like a man. He comes from Geelong, Australia and grow up like any normal kid until he picked up a baseball bat at the age of 8 and from that day forward he hasn't looked back.

He has won the MVP award, hitting award etc in any competition he has played in. He has played for the under 16, under 18 and senior national teams already.

He had just turn 18 years old and coming off his second season with the Melbourne Aces in the Australian Baseball League. He played his first professional game at the young age of 16 and became a regular at center field for them at the start of his second season.

While he was out at the pub with his Aces' boys having an end of season drinking session his phone rang, it was his manager/dad Garry Powers. Garry had received a call from scouts over in the US, Barry has been invited to compete in the Topps Showcase 3 game series for the International Region.

Barry celebrated this great news by necking a pint!

Re: Barry Powers: The Wonder from Down Under (RTTS)

    Topps Amateur Showcase: Game One

As he walked up to get his BP swings in he could hear two scouts talking between themselves. One had said to the other that they couldn't believe that some of the scouts thought this Powers kid could be the next best thing, calling him to a dumbed up hulk with bleached blonde hair, a typical Aussie bogan.

If Barry Powers wasn't motivated already to show the scouts what he was made off he sure was now.

It didn't take long for him to have a chance either as he came in at clean up with the bags loaded, none out in the bottom of the first. He thought to himself, this is it!

And with one swing of the bat he cleared the bases with a triple to the center field wall.

As Barry Powers slide into third he bounced up on the bag and pointed both fingers straight at the two scouts that had dissed him earlier while yelling "How you like that ladies!", this was Barry Powers, a confident, big mouthed, big bat, ball player from the land down under.

      Topps Amateur Showcase: Game Two

He had gone 2 from 5 in Game 1 and knew that he hadn't really done anything beside the base clearing triple. He knew what he didn't to do if he wanted to go in the first round.

Barry Powers was man of the game but he still wasn't happy! He hadn't manged to knock one over the wall yet and that is what he has been able to do since he was 14 years old. He has one more game to show the scouts the power he has.

        Topps Amateur Showcase: Game Three

He has been swinging the bat well and with 2 triples shown a little of his power but not all of it.

He also hadn't been able to show off his speed with only the one chance to steal a bag, which he did, and he hadn't had a single fly ball come his way.

For today's game he had one thing on his mind and that was crush a home run!

As he stepped to the plate knowing that this would be probably his second last chance to crush one he was locked in looking for a high fastball.

There was two on, two out and he had grounded into a double play in his first at-bat, the pressure would be building on almost anyone but not Barry Powers.

He rocked back and got that high fastball he was after on the first pitch.

He had hit the ball that hard it broke a part of the mega screen in right field as it crashed into it.... As he jogged around the bases he thought to himself, they must not have read the scouting report, as he laughed.

The MLB First Year Players Draft

Garry Powers, his dad and manager, had assured Barry that he was going to be picked up in the early stages of round one.

Teams that had shown interest to draft Barry Powers in the early to mid picks in the first round were the White Sox, Phillies, Rays, Marlins, Blue Jays, Yankees, and the Athletics.

Barry's top choice was the Houston Astros with the 5th pick and then the Oakland Athletics with the 15th pick, but he really didn't care who drafted him. He just wanted to play as all of his life had revolved around baseball ( a little bit of drinking, girls, gym, and other typical bogan things).

Barry Powers was sliding down the board, the Phillies and White Sox had both said he was probably their top choice, probably probably being the key word. The Reds had pick 10 and had even talked to him, high chance they were one of the scouts he showboated to, they selected Joe Bardy.

FINALLY, Barry Powers had been drafted by a Major League team. This had been his dream from the first day he learnt about baseball.

He thought to himself, the Tampa Bay Rays - I guess I can play there. Little did he know that he would have to work his way up the ranks as not everyone thought he was as ready as he did.

Barry Powers was assigned to the Rays Double-A affiliate team the Montgomery Biscuits, even though he wasn't over the moon about this he did receive a nice signing bonus and his dad, Garry Powers, reminded him that once they see what he can do he will be in the BIGS before he knows it.

              Start of the 2015 Season

5 Game Series: vs Chattanooga Lookouts
              (9th - 13th of April 2015)

              Game One:

The day had come, Barry Powers was ready to unleash and show the America baseball fans that he was going to be something special, well more special then he already is.

Was his first at bat he got his first Double-A hit, not really impressive as it was a forced ground ball back up the middle but it was a hit.

It's the bottom of the 13th in the season opener scores tied 1-1, Barry Powers has two singles but in his last three AB's his has flied out, stuck out and grounded out, he stepped up to the plate....

IT'S RIGHT IN THE WHEEL HOUSE.......

              IT'S A WALK OFF HOMER!!!!

What a game from Barry Powers, he goes 3 from 6 and wins the game with his first Double-A home run!

                Game Two:

Still riding the high from the ending to yesterdays game, Barry Powers is on king of the world, well maybe not world but of Montgomery at least.

Well not as exciting as last night but going 2 from 4 and getting the win is still pretty good. Barry Powers is seeing the ball extremely well to start the season, maybe a Triple-A call up might not be to far away if he keeps this up.

                Game Three:

The manger decided the fans needed a break from the Powers overload, and has given his star center fielder the night off.

                Biscuits lost 0 - 6

                Game Four:

Fresh after last night off, Barry Powers is looking to smash a few more hits for the Lookouts fielders to chase after.

"Powers crushes a double down the line"

"Barry "Walk-Off" Powers, that is an RBI single to end the game!"

What can Barry Powers do wrong? Well heaps of things actually but on the baseball field and in the batters box he is almost GOD like. He goes 4 from 5, showing that he is more then just a power hitter with 3 singles and a nice corner tucked double. Oh and his second walk off in three games.

                Game Five:

How do you top a game where you went 4 from 5 at bats? No dunno but Barry Powers does! This kid never stops out doing himself, and today he completed his first career cycle!

Everyone take note, Barry Powers is well on his way to the show!

Montgomery Biscuits win the series 3 - 2

5 Game Series: at Jacksonville Suns
                  (15th - 19th of April 2015)

                  Game One:

First time on the road and it's to sunny Jacksonville..... Well not day one but hopefully the sun shines through over the next couple of days as Barry Powers wants to work on his tan.

"Top of the 5th, and Barry Powers rips one to left center field"

"It's off the wall as he rounds second base!"

"I DON'T BELIEVE IT, IT'S AN IN THE PARK HOME RUN!!"

The media is going crazy, everyone wants to know who this kid from Australia is. He has a big bat, quick feet and a mullet to challenge all others. When asked in the post game interview about how he has managed this hot streak to start the season, he simply replied with "This is what I do".

                  Game Two:

Well the skies are clear and as Barry Powers says, Suns out Guns?

"Barry Powers send a missile back in from out deep."

                  Game Three:

Barry Powers has been "rested" by the coach, he believes it's so the Jacksonville Suns have a chance to win.

                  Biscuits lose 0 - 5

                  Game Four:

"That's another triple crushed by Powers!"

"He runs a mile to flag this one down, and that ends this one. Biscuits win 7 - 4.

Another top game and series from Barry Powers, ends up with 4 hits and 3 RBI's in another win.

                  Game Five:

With the series wrapped up coach pulled Barry Powers from the Game 5 lineup to give some other guy on the team a go.... and the win to Jacksonville.

                  Biscuits lose 2-5

Montgomery Biscuits win the series 3 - 2

5 Game Series vs Mobile Bay Bears
                    (20th - 24th of April 2015)

                    Game One:

Back "home" and Barry Powers is on a 7 game hit streak and seeing the ball as if it was the size of a watermelon. Also it looks like good weather for home runs.

"And that one is getting out of here!"

"BANG! That ball is gone, don't even bother looking for it."

Well that was Barry Powers first multiply home run game in Double A and in true Powers style he said after the game that if stays down at this level against guys with only fastballs it will continue to happen.

                    Game Two:

"And that one is going to get down for extra bases folks!"

"Barry Powers makes base stealing look really easy something, other times extremely hard."

                    Game Three:

"That's home run number 6 on the season already, boy he swings a big bat."

                    Game Four:

Another rest day for Barry Powers. And it looked like his starting to rub off on his teammates as the start swinging for the fences.

                    Biscuits win 20 - 1

                    Game Five:

"I know it's very earlier in his career BUT we could be witnessing the rise of one of the best hitters the game has ever seen (Garry Powers)"

"when his not hitting the ball over the wall, his hitting it into it for extra bases. That's his second triple of the night!"

5 Game Series at Mississippi Braves
                        (30th of April - 4th of May 2015)

                        Game One:

"He also fields the ball sometimes!"

Another game, another three hits. Barry Powers has extended his hit streak out to 14 games now. Currently leads the league in batting average, hits, rbi's, home runs, doubles, triples and stolen bases.

                        Game Two:

"WOW, that is massive. That ball is over the scoreboard!"

                        Game Three:

                        Rest day for Barry Powers.

                        Biscuits win 5 - 1

                        Game Four:

"And yes, that's home run number 10 for Powers!"

                        Game Five:

"And that base hit will keep the streak alive and get the biscuits a lead off hit to start the 9th."

The Biscuits sweep the series 5 nil and are looking great, mostly because of Barry Powers. He has knocked 10 balls over the wall and is currently on an 18 game hit streak. He is waiting by the phone for his call up to the Triple A's squad.

                        Biscuits win the series 5 - 0

5 Game Series vs Birmingham Barons
                          (6th of May - 10th of May 2015)

                          Game One:

"BANG! That's a 3 run homer to get the scoreboard going today!"

"This young man is hungry! That's his second today and 12th on the season so far!"

Barry Powers loves home runs, who much that he decided to smash two over the fence today. He also has a nice 19 game hitting streak going from the start of the season.

                          Game Two:

"And with that safe hit he now has hit safely in 20 straight games, Barry Powers is simply dominating the Double A circuit."

"Wow he looked like superstar on that attempt, lucky for the batter he is not superman and that will get down for extra bases."

Barry Powers has his first game going 4 from 4, he showed another side to him other then power today and that is he has great bat control. He still has yet to record a walk this season but that doesn't worry him as he replied with this when asked after the game, "Walks? Why are we talking about walks? I'm batting over 500, I lead the league in hits, home runs and RBI's, and you want me to start getting walks? I swing the bat, I make things happen. I'm sure once I start facing pitchers with more stuff and control I will get walks, but when a fastball is coming at me somewhere in or near the zone I'm not taking it, that ball is getting crushed."

                          Game Three:

Barry Powers needs his rest, it's hard being as good as him day in and day out.

                          Biscuits win 1 - 7

                          Game Four:

"That's another RBI triple for Powers, the Biscuit peg one back but still trail 3-1."

                          Game Five:

"Barry Powers's is up next, his 0 from 3 tonight and that hitting streak is looks like it's in trouble.... He rocked back and put everything into this swing, it's going, going, GOING... No it's caught right up against the wall in right field."

Well all good things have to come to an end and the hit streak is dead. This is his first game in the US that he has not recorded at least one hit in, it's a sad day for our young star but he will be back at it tomorrow looking to start a new one and continue his journey to the SHOW!"

                          Biscuits win the series 5 - 0

5 Game series at Tennessee Smokies
                            (11th of May - 15th of May 2015)

                            Game One:

Coach gave Barry Powers the day off to lick his wounds after his unbelievable start to the season. The biscuits struggled without there superstar run producer.

                            Biscuit lost 4 - 9

                            Game Two:

"First at bat, first pitch, and that's a 2 run double to get him back on the hitters list straight away."

"Barry Powers showed right there that he will commit himself to every play 100%, prefectly breaking up the double play attempt."

                            Game Three:

"That ball is smoked down the right field line and that will bring the Biscuits within 3 runs."

Barry Powers is not happy in Montgomery, the coach has issues with him for some reason and decides to throw him around the order but mainly batting him below 5 at the moment. Barry has request to be moved up the order but we will see what happens.

                            Game Four:

Maybe coach didn't like an 18 year old rookie telling him how he should run his team. Barry Powers has been bench or rested.

                            Biscuits win 2 - 1

                            Game Five:

"Barry Powers goes BANG! That's a 3 run homer folks!!

"And that ball is down and in the gap. Powers with the bases clearing double to left center field. That's 6 RBI's for the young power hitter."

The coach finally came to his senses and took the young sluggers advice on board and Barry Powers dominates the game batting in the clean up spot with 3 hits (including a homer that is still coming down) and 6 RBI's. Differently one of his best games in his short career.

                            Biscuits win the series 3 - 2
