2019 West Coast Conference Tournament
Site: Jenny Craig Pavilion – San Diego, CA

Quarterfinals Matchups:
(1) #8 San Francisco vs. (8) Loyola Marymount
(4) Pepperdine vs. (5) San Diego
(3) Saint Mary's vs. (6) Portland
(2) Gonzaga vs. (7) Santa Clara

The 2019 West Coast Conference has an obvious favorite in the eight-ranked San Francisco Dons, who enter the tournament with a 27-4 overall record along with a 13-1 conference record. However, the prospects of an upset are ripe, as well, as every other WCC team will miss the Big Dance if they do not win the WCC Tournament. Every opponent the Dons face will be throwing giving them their best shot in hopes of prolonging the season.

The top-seeded San Francisco Dons have won the WCC Tournament the past two seasons. They will take on the #8-seeded Loyola Marymount Lions in the first quarterfinal. The Dons swept the season series.

The San Diego Toreros, who have played relatively well in conference play after struggling early in the season, will take on the Pepperdine Waves in the other quarterfinal that afternoon.

That night, the Portland Pilots and Saint Mary's Gaels will take the floor at 7 PM while Gonzaga and Santa Clara will hit the hardwood following the Portland/Saint Mary's game.

I think the only way you won't win this WCC tournament is if Santa Clara makes it all the way to the finals. If that's the case, I'm picking the upset of Santa Clara over San Fran!!!!!!!!

I agree. I would rather avoid Santa Clara, if possible, as they already beat me this year once. However, I'd think Gonzaga would have a decent shot at beating me, as well. They've got a solid team. And Pepperdine actually is only rated a couple points lower than me and have the second-best overall in the WCC, so they could pose issues.

March 8th, 2019

The top-seeded San Francisco Dons (28-4) easily disposed of the #8-seeded Loyola Marymount Lions (9-20) as expected this evening. The Don led 49-30 at halftime. The game was never in doubt from the start as the Dons dominated all 40 minutes of basketball.

Due to the blowout, Coach Frizzell got a chance to rest his starters and, as a result, no starter played more than 20 minutes. This could prove useful in the WCC Tournament, which is three games in three days if you make it to the Championship Game.

The Dons were led by Owen Kole, who in only 20 minutes of playing time, managed to rack up 23 points and 8 rebounds. Jason Redick added 13 points while Oliver Hudson hit three treys as he scored 11 points.

The Dons will play the winner of the San Diego/Pepperdine game in the WCC Conference Tournament Semifinals.

(5) San Diego (12-16) vs. (1) San Francisco (29-4)

March 9th, 2019

The San Francisco Dons (29-4) defeated the San Diego Toreros (12-16) 77-49 this evening to advance to the West Coast Conference Champsionship Game for the third straight year. The Dons will take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs for the conference crown tomorrow evening. San Francisco is 2-0 against Gonzaga thus far this year.

This evening, the Dons struggled early on as they only led 33-30 at halftime, but the second half was an entirely different story as the Dons erupted, both offensively and defensively, as they outscored the Toreros 44-19 in the second period to claim a 28-point victory.

For the second consecutive night, Coach Frizzell was able to rest his starters for the latter portions of the game, which should bode well for tomorrow's matchup against Gonzaga. The Dons will be more rested than the Bulldogs, though both teams will still be fatigued from playing three games in three days.

The Dons were led once again by Owen Kole, who has really picked his play up recently. Kole scored 18 points and grabbed half-a-dozen boards.

Gonzaga will enter the Championship Game tomorrow against San Francisco with a 22-10 overall record along with a 10-4 record in conference play, which slotted them as the #2 seed. San Francisco beat the Bulldogs by an average of 18.5 points in their two previous meetings this season, but Gonzaga has some talent and we will see tomorrow if they will be able to translate that talent into a win or not.

"We're looking forward to playing Gonzaga," stated Coach Frizzell. "Mark Few has a very solid basketball team. They won the National Championship 10 years ago or so, so it's quite obvious that Gonzaga has a winning pedigree. We look forward to taking them on and I hope that we can pull out our third straight West Coast Conference Championship."
