Hail to the Chief (2K17 MyCareer)

I was on the fence for a while about whether or not I was going to do a MyCareer this year or any chising for that matter.

But after playing a few games of MyCareer, I like the mode and I think I'm going to go ahead and post it.

I'm not a big graphics person. I really like to tell a good story. But I'll have regular game updates. I still haven't decided on what type of format I'm going to incorporate so bear with me as I work out the kinks.

Hope you all enjoy my most recent production.

      NBA Position: SF/SG
      Class: Freshman
      HT: 6-7 WT: 227
      Hometown: Washington DC
      College: Georgetown

      NBA Comparison - Carmelo Anthony

Kennedy is definitely on another level from his peers….Dubbed Mr. President in high school, it was quickly seen how his size was not going to allow him to just push past defenders on the college level…Has developed a mid-range jumper to accommodate that…..Becoming a solid player in catch and shoot and off the dribble situations….Will overpower smaller wings in the post…..Always known for making the extra pass, can definitely become a play maker in the league…Definitely shows room for potential if he works during his first two seasons in the NBA

Defense will be a weakness with Kennedy early on.… Currently dubbed a tweener, he may be on the slower and slightly smaller side for a small forward…. Often gets outmuscled in the paint when going for rebounds….May sometimes force an unnecessary shot if the offense isn’t flowing…. Sometimes turns the ball over when looking to make a highlight play.

              The Time is Now

Jack Kennedy sits in the green room of the NBA Draft waiting to hear his name being called. At the table is his mother, Margo; his mentor, Washington Falls; his agent Bruce; and his girlfriend, Alanah. The past year seems like a complete whirlwind in his mind.

“You nervous?” Bruce leans over and asks him.

“Nah, man.” He clears his throat. “I’m not nervous. This is what it’s all about right? Draft day. I just want to see where I’m going.”

He sits back in his chair and thinks about the first time he suited up for the Hoyas. It seems like yesterday, but a lifetime ago at the same time.

              -------------------------------------------------

He looks around the locker room as the team prepares for Midnight Madness. After two months of waiting, it was finally time for him to put on his uniform as a member of the Georgetown Hoyas. Even though it was only a scrimmage, it was still something. With both his parents being alumni, he has been coming here his entire life. It was like his home away from home. There was definitely no question in his mind where he was going to college.

“You made a wise choice, Pres. I think we can do some special things this season.”

“Thanks, Grant. I think so too. I can’t wait to get started.”

Grant Alabaster was a senior point guard at Georgetown. He was one of the players that gave Jack a tour of the campus during his official visit. Landing one of the top prospects in the nation was a big deal for Georgetown. He wanted a shot at a championship before he graduated. A real shot. He knew that having Jack on the team was definitely going to give them their best shot.

“Good. Good. You hear that?” Grant nods his head toward the arena. The students and fans were going crazy. He could only imagine what would happen if they were actually facing off against an opponent.

“It’s loud out there. Is it always like this?”

“Pretty much. Especially for big games.”

Jack brought his right hand over his heart, tapped it twice and looked to the sky before making his way through the tunnel and onto the court.

              -------------------------------------------------

The draft had finally started and Commissioner Silver was at the podium. Even though he knew it was impossible, he still hoped that he might be taken number one by the Sixers. He would have been reasonably close to his family and going number one isn’t that bad.

              The Sixers took Ben Simmons.

“No real surprise, but really? Hello, National Champion here. LSU didn't even make the tournament.”

“Just relax, baby. Philadelphia is still building. I don’t think that would have been a good situation for you.”

He listens as more and more teams select other players. Brandon Ingram to the Lakers; Dragan Bender to the Suns; Buddy Hield to the Pelicans.

Even though they were only at the seventh pick, he was definitely getting kind of anxious. And, if he were to really admit it, a little angry.

“It’s okay, Pres. You will definitely be a lottery pick, my man.” Bruce was trying to calm his client. He was a projected a lottery pick, but he thought that he would go at least Top 5. Two small forwards and a shooting guard had already been taken before him. “There is no way, you’ll go less than tenth.”

              “You better be right, man.”

The seventh pick came and went and the Nuggets decided to go with combo guard Jamal Murray.

“Did you really want to go to Denver, Pres?”

              “Nah, I guess you’re right.”

Just then, Jack’s phone lit up on the table in front of him. It was a number he didn’t recognize.

“Jack, this is Vlade Divac with the Sacramento Kings.”

              “Yes, sir.”

“Are you ready to bring your A game to Sacramento?”

              “Yes, sir.”

“Congratulations, kid. We’re taking you next. Smile for the cameras.”

              “Yes, sir. Thank you, sir.”

He hangs up the phone and looks around at the table. Everyone is waiting for him to say something.

              “Everybody get ready to smile.”

Commissioner Silver heads back to the podium and announces that with the eighth pick of the 2016 NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings select Jack Kennedy, out of Georgetown.

Jack stands up receiving hugs and handshakes from those in attendance. He taps his heart twice and looks to the sky again as he makes his way to the podium to begin the next phase of his journey.

                          Alanah Comes to Town

Jack woke up early on Tuesday to make his way down to the gym. He wanted to get some work in before heading to the airport to pick up his girlfriend. She managed to get some free time in her schedule so she was going to spend a few days with him California. He was hoping to win her over and possibly get her to transfer to a college on the West Coast.

After their win against Toronto on Sunday, the team decided to fly home on Monday morning to give the players time to relax before facing off against New Orleans on Tuesday. There was no mandatory practice that week, but Coach Joerger expected everybody to log in some time in the gym before their game against New Orleans.

That was one thing that he found different from college. You were responsible for getting yourself in shape and prepared for the games. No one was hounding you about practice. If you wanted to get better, you had to put the work in yourself. Nobody was going to make you do anything.

Jack pulled up to the training facility in his 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class and saw that he was the only person in the parking lot. He couldn’t believe it. Justice usually almost always beats him to the gym. He grabbed his bag and headed inside, doing some light stretching and running a couple laps before grabbing a ball off the rack to work on some post moves.

                          “Do my eyes deceive me?”

He turns around to see Justice walking in the gym.

“Did you really beat me here? The day after a game no less? I thought you would have been sleeping in.”

“Yeah, well I thought you slept here.”

He and Justice shared a laugh.

                          “So what you working on?”

“Nothing in particular. Just trying to work up a nice sweat. I gotta pick up my girl from the airport in a little bit, so I thought I’d come in early because I doubt that I’ll be in here tomorrow. If you know what I mean.”
He said as he wiggled his eye brows.

“My man.” Justice reaches his fist out and Jack hits it with his fist. “So why don’t we get in a game of 1-on-1 and then you can jet out and enjoy your off day?”

                          “Cool.”

                          ---------------------------------------

“How’s my number one guy?” Jack’s agent, Bruce asked as soon as he answered his phone. He was on his way back from the airport with Alanah.

“I’m good, Bruce what’s going on, man?”

“Well, I was in town so I thought I’d stop by. I got a few things in the works for you. I’m trying to get a buzz going with the folks over at 2K.”

                          “Uh-huh.”

“And I’m working on possibly, maybe getting a deal with Stance socks.”

“That’s dope. I love their socks. Let me know how that works out.”

"Definitely. Well, as I am outside of your place and I don’t see the Benz, I’m going to assume your out. Where you at? The gym?”

“I was earlier. I just picked up my girl from the airport.”
He looked over at Alanah and picked up her hand from her lap.

“Watch what you say, you’re on speaker.”

                          Bruce laughed.

“Anything I say will be good, Pres. You know that. Well, look I won’t hold you, but maybe we can get together tomorrow after the game? I’d love to get some face time with you, man.”

“Uh, yeah, sure. After the game is great. I’ll see you then.”

He ends the call and looks over at his girlfriend.

                          “Sorry about that, babe.”

She shakes her head at him. “Hey, you’re working. Building your brand and all that. I get it. I’m glad you pushed the meeting back though. I really want to just spend some time with you today.”

                          “Good.”

                          “So where to first?”

“Well, I hope you’re hungry. There’s this sushi bar downtown that I want to take you to.”

“I hope it’s not too fancy, Jackson.”
He smiled when she called him by his first name. Not many people still did. He was known to the world as Mr. President or Pres. “I still have my travel clothes on.”

“You’ll be fine, babe. It’s just sushi. I mean, it’s not Kotobuki, but it’s close.”

Alanah thought back to their first date after they finished their group assignment before winter break. He asked her out four days before she was scheduled to go home and two nights before the team was heading to New York to play Syracuse.

He took her to a sushi restaurant and she had to admit she was impressed. She thought he was going to just take her to the Shake Shack or something like that, but they sat down and had a nice meal at a pretty nice restaurant.

“Well, I guess I can stand to eat then.”

                          ---------------------------------------

Not long after eating, Jack took Alanah to his home in West Sacramento. After taking her bags in, he gave her the grand tour of his five bedroom, four bathroom estate before ending things in his man cave that was actually a separate space. The previous owner had a garage where he kept his antique car collection. Jack had it converted to house an indoor court, pool table, a small kitchen and a living room.

They were sitting on the couch, getting ready to catch up on HBO’s Ballers.

“This is like a whole other house, Jackson. I feel like you blew your whole salary on this place.”

“Nah. Plus I have endorsements and everything coming in. Money isn’t going to be an issue for me for a long time.”

“You never know what’s going to happen out there. Don’t think like that. Always keep something for a rainy day.”

“I guess you’re right. You were always the brains of this operation. That’s why I need you here with me. What’s it going to take to get you to Cali, Lanah?”

                          “Me finishing my degree.”

“You can go to school here.”

                          “But I love Georgetown.”

                          “More than me?”
He said as he gave her his best puppy dog eyes.

“Don’t do that, Jackson. That’s not going to work. Get those blue eyes off me.”

He tried for a few more seconds before giving in with a huff. “Fine. I mean it is Georgetown.”

                          “Exactly. Start the show.”
