Well think about it. Why would you have Silver members on your friend's list in the first place? How would you go about even finding them to put on your list?

Some numbers from a Sony Presentation.

Quote:
Outlined today during a Sony presentation to investors and analysts, the PlayStation Network has 33 million registered accounts, 5.4 million daily user sign-ins and 1.4 million daily visits to the PlayStation Store.

Those 33 million users download a staggering 25 petabytes of data a month. More importantly for Sony, they're also spending three times what they did last year at the PlayStation Store.

Sony's presentation highlights what it called a significant revenue in downloadable games and add-ons. The company also pointed out that its video delivery service now has more than 2,417 movies and 15,047 television episodes.

A final point made in the slide presentation by Sony about the PlayStation Network is that a new revenue stream is coming from a subscription model.

Reached for contact this morning, SCEA told Kotaku that in terms of the PlayStation Network and subscriptions "we're looking into a variety of options, but nothing to announce at this time."

i think this is prob going to be more of a subscribtion thing then a pay to play type thing. Like a subscribtion for netflix or like a video game rental system type thing.

Sony not stating that PSN will remain free pretty much seals the deal it's not going to be. They could have easily stated "no comment" or "PSN is free and will remain so", they did neither.

From what I have read, online play will still be free but they will charge for other things. I can deal for that I guess. Have to see what it is.

Eh, like I said, I'm fine paying. Fifty dollars for how fantastic Live is is a cheap fee anyway... it's a little under a dollar a week. Hell, I'll bet half you guys spend that an hour on cigarettes

re: Playstation Plus - Premium PS3 Service

If Sony can continue to improve the PSN to the level of XBL I probably wouldn't mind paying for whatever it is they'll be charging for. Though I don't think I'd be very happy if they started charging in a similar manner to XBL with the state the PSN is in right now. The PSN is great as a free service, but it isn't in the same league as Live.

I would think that the biggest impact of Sony charging for PSN use will come in the next generation of consoles. If Microsoft's next console can maintain a respectable failure rate I may have a tough decision when it comes to purchasing a new console in a few years. If the PSN is no longer free and XBL is still head and shoulders above it, why would I buy the next console from Sony over Microsoft's? Aside from MLB The Show I can't really think of anything else that would keep me in Sony's camp.
