They have to be kicking themselves for not charging to begin with. Seeing 360 make $50/year times 10 mill (approx) would be very disturbing if I was the one at Sony who suggested it be free. When PS3 was expensive they prob felt like they couldn't squeeze anymore money out of people. But now that its cheaper it's had to cross their mind on how they can charge for it.

I disagree, now that the prices are the same, it makes the free online play even more of a selling point, especially to uninformed buyers. I think most "regular folk" if offered a 299.99 console with an additional $50 a year fee for online play versus a console that's 299.99 with no extra subscriptions would pick the latter. They have to be kicking themselves for not charging to begin with. not to mention you don't have to pay $100 for a wireless adapter.I disagree, now that the prices are the same, it makes the free online play even more of a selling point, especially to uninformed buyers. Exactly, I know all the fanboys constantly harp on that, but it's true.
for 299 you get a PS3, 120gb hard drive, free online play, free wireless, one free "play and charge", and a blu ray player.Comment

And no good games!
Just kidding, I actually enjoy quite a few titles on PS3 and hope they don't start charging you guys for online gaming since you already bought your systems, which would constitute some sort of agreement you had with them at the time of purchase.Comment

re: Playstation Plus - Premium PS3 Service
I'm in both camps. PS3 is pretty much just for exclusives/blu ray/hd videos. Xbox is for multiplats thanks to the live. What I'd really like to see is both consoles offer free online play, but charge a monthly/annual fee for the premium features. Party chat, premium themes, early demos, etc.Comment

It's not that bad. Microsoft counts Gold and Silver accounts as XBox Live Members since technically, they are. There's no way they have 10 million paying XBL members.Comment

re: Playstation Plus - Premium PS3 Service
I agree, but now that pretty much everyone has a broadband connection it wouldn't surprise me if at least 50% of Xbox Live members were gold. I know the vast majority of my friends list is. Also, I randomly have a habit of clicking on the Xbox logo in people's names here at OS to look at their gamer cards and I'd say it's around 75% or so here at OS that have gold.Comment

Well think about it. Why would you have Silver members on your friend's list in the first place? How would you go about even finding them to put on your list?Comment

Some numbers from a Sony Presentation.
Outlined today during a Sony presentation to investors and analysts, the PlayStation Network has 33 million registered accounts, 5.4 million daily user sign-ins and 1.4 million daily visits to the PlayStation Store.
Those 33 million users download a staggering 25 petabytes of data a month. More importantly for Sony, they're also spending three times what they did last year at the PlayStation Store.
Sony's presentation highlights what it called a significant revenue in downloadable games and add-ons. The company also pointed out that its video delivery service now has more than 2,417 movies and 15,047 television episodes.
A final point made in the slide presentation by Sony about the PlayStation Network is that a new revenue stream is coming from a subscription model.
Reached for contact this morning, SCEA told Kotaku that in terms of the PlayStation Network and subscriptions "we're looking into a variety of options, but nothing to announce at this time."Comment

re: Playstation Plus - Premium PS3 Service
i think this is prob going to be more of a subscribtion thing then a pay to play type thing. Like a subscribtion for netflix or like a video game rental system type thing.

Sony not stating that PSN will remain free pretty much seals the deal it's not going to be. They could have easily stated "no comment" or "PSN is free and will remain so", they did neither.Comment

From what I have read, online play will still be free but they will charge for other things. I can deal for that I guess. Have to see what it is.follow me on twitter: www.twitter.com/eton_riflesComment
