Yeah, it's not completely horrible. People still think that the price tag makes XBL better, when PC games have been played online just fine for free since forever. XBL has more frills, but that's MS trying to keep people paying.

Sony could certainly freshen up their service though, as some of their decisions make it look archaic in comparison to Live. Many people don't have a headset, which MS went out of their way to avoid. A user also shouldn't have to download a demo for an arcade game, then install it, only to have to go download and install the full game as well. MS requires that demos are the full version of the game, which you unlock from within.

And they really need to start requring demos for every PSN game.

Premium PSN plans for E3 reveal, to cost “less than £50 per year and a free game every month”

VG247 has learnt that Sony is to reveal plans for PSN’s premium services at E3.

According to a highly-placed source, Sony will announce a large-scale monetizing scheme for PSN at the LA show, but we’re assured nothing planned will impact the service’s current free aspects.
A string of features will be revealed, apparently costing “less than £50 per year”.
Sony will confirm plans to give all subscribers one free PSN game per month, from a choice of “two to four” every month.
“If you work it out, PSN games cost an average of £6-9 each, so over a year you’re basically going to be breaking even,” said our source.
A streaming music application similar to Spotify will be announced in Sony’s press conference on June 15. It’s thought that this can run in the background while playing games.
Rumours that cross-game voice chat is being saved as a paid feature are apparently not true, we were told.
“I can tell you now, 100 percent, that that’s not the case,” our man continued.
“There’s nothing in the premium package which will gimp regular PSN users.”
The PSN premium services announcement is thought to be a major part of Sony’s E3 conference, which will also heavily feature Move.
It’s thought that a PSP2 announcement, for this reason, is unlikely, and will be saved for either gamescom or TGS later this year. Get more detail on that here.

Exactly, which is much more awesome than spending it towards nothing (except for being able to play online). It will probably now get me to get games like Wakeboarding, Peggle, and WipeOut HD without thinking twice about it.

Um, if they put those games as options to buy.

My guess is it'll be more of the games like Undertow, they'll give underperforming games for free. I just doubt they'll offer the top level games for free, but that's only my opinion.

Exactly. I don't understand the appeal of this plan. It's not like you are getting the games for cheaper... you pretty much break even. The only other thing mentioned is the streaming music, which doesn't excite me.

So why not just buy the games you want individually?

The streaming music option excites me most, assuming that's part of the premium service. And you're right, I didn't think about the fact that they would give us the option of which games to choose, which is kind of a bummer. But hey, still better than no games at all IMO.

I think all I'm saying is the cat is out of the bag now, and since I understand that we will finally need to pay a service for some things on PSN, at least we get something back in return. That's most important to me.

I know you guys are worried about the feature sets, but my biggest concern is that will this allow for better servers on Sony's end? It should not take us forever to d/l the smallest files sometimes.

Sony downloads are odd at times. I remember downloading the GOW demo was going at about 2mb/sec.

I don't know what's wrong with their download times. I can download a demo from xbox live in 15 minutes or less but if I try to download the same thing from PSN it takes an hour+.

PSN demos don't take long for me to download. My PS3 is packed up until Friday so I can't test the download speed until then, but I know for a fact that it was faster than 2.0mbps.
