2024 NFL Season Preview: New York Giants Embark on Rebuilding Journey

New York Giants (Last Year: 6-11)

The 2024 NFL season is shaping up to be a pivotal year for the New York Giants, as they look to rebound from recent challenges and lay the foundation for future success. Under the strategic direction of General Manager Joe Schoen and Head Coach Brian Daboll, the Giants have made significant roster changes and strategic adjustments to address past issues and set a new course.

        Offseason Moves and Key Additions

The offseason was marked by notable acquisitions and departures aimed at revitalizing the team's core. The Giants traded for edge rusher Brian Burns from the Panthers, adding a dynamic presence to their pass rush. They signed veterans such as guard Jon Runyan Jr., tackle Jermaine Eluemunor, and running back Devin Singletary to strengthen key areas of the roster. The addition of Malik Nabers, a first-round pick from LSU, adds a playmaking element to the receiving corps, while the departure of longtime running back Saquon Barkley signals a shift toward a committee approach on offense.

Daniel Jones: The Season of Validation

Quarterback Daniel Jones enters his sixth season with the Giants, facing mounting pressure to prove his worth as the franchise quarterback. Despite showing flashes of potential, Jones's tenure has been marked by inconsistency and injuries. The 2024 season is pivotal for Jones, as the front office and coaching staff will be evaluating his long-term future with the team. Head Coach Brian Daboll will take over play-calling duties, a move aimed at bringing his proven offensive expertise to help Jones find his rhythm. Improved protection from the revamped offensive line, featuring Runyan Jr. and Eluemunor, should give Jones the time needed to make decisive plays.

        Revamping the Run Game

With Barkley's departure, the Giants will rely on a running back committee featuring Devin Singletary and rookie Tyrone Tracy Jr., who is known for his agility and vision. The coaching staff has emphasized creativity in formations and play-calling to maximize the running backs' impact and maintain a balanced offensive attack.

        2024 New York Giants Offense

The Giants' offense struggled in 2023, ranking 28th in points scored. To address these issues, the front office added key pieces to improve the offensive line and receiving corps. The success of the offense in 2024 hinges on Jones's consistency and the ability of new additions like Nabers and Singletary to integrate effectively.

        A New Defensive Approach

Defensively, the Giants have focused on enhancing their pass rush and secondary. Shane Bowen takes over as defensive coordinator, replacing Wink Martindale. Bowen's approach focuses on disciplined, assignment-driven defense with strong emphasis on stopping the run and maintaining effective red zone performance. While his strategy includes some creative pressure, it is not heavily reliant on aggressive blitzing. The addition of Burns, combined with Thibodeaux’s continued development, positions the Giants to increase their sack totals and disrupt opposing offenses. Dexter Lawrence remains a vital anchor on the defensive line, while the secondary will depend on Adoree' Jackson and young talent like Deonte Banks after Xavier McKinney's departure.

        Special Teams Focus

Special teams will play a crucial role in close games, with the Giants emphasizing consistency and field position control. Veteran kicker Graham Gano will be a key figure in ensuring reliable field goal execution. The team has also focused on strengthening coverage units to limit opponent returns and improve field position management.

        Schedule and Challenges

The 2024 schedule features high-stakes division matchups against the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys, which will be pivotal for the Giants' playoff ambitions. Other key games include contests against the Minnesota Vikings, Cincinnati Bengals, and Baltimore Ravens. The Giants will also play internationally in Week 10, facing the Carolina Panthers in Munich, Germany. Road games against teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers and Atlanta Falcons will test the team's resilience, while division games against the Washington Commanders add further pressure.

2024 New York Giants Positional Rankings (1-5 stars)

        Quarterbacks: ★★☆☆☆

        Running Backs: ★★★☆☆

        Receivers: ★★★☆☆

        Offensive Line: ★★★☆☆

        Defensive Line: ★★★★☆

        Linebackers: ★★★☆☆

        Secondary: ★★★☆☆

        Special Teams: ★★★☆☆

        Coaching: ★★★☆☆

        Season Outlook

With the team in a rebuilding phase, expectations are tempered. The focus will be on player development, establishing a cohesive team identity, and evaluating key positions for future growth. Daniel Jones’s performance will be scrutinized, and the coaching staff and front office face pressure to demonstrate progress or risk being on the hot seat by season's end. If key players stay healthy and the team executes effectively, the Giants could outperform modest expectations and contend for their first division title since 2011.

Projection: 6-11 (4th in NFC East)

With the stage set, Giants fans have reason to watch closely as 2024 unfolds, hopeful that this season marks the beginning of a resurgence for Big Blue.

2024 NFL Week 1 Preview: Minnesota Vikings vs. New York Giants

East Rutherford, NJ – As the 2024 NFL season kicks off, the Minnesota Vikings head to MetLife Stadium to take on the New York Giants in what promises to be a thrilling Week 1 matchup. Both teams are eager to start strong after making significant offseason moves designed to catapult them into playoff contention.

            New-Look Vikings Eye Redemption

The Vikings, coming off an inconsistent 2023 campaign, have retooled under Head Coach Kevin O'Connell. The headline acquisition for Minnesota was running back Aaron Jones, who joined the team to reinvigorate a ground game that lacked consistency last season. The Vikings also bolstered their defense by drafting edge rusher Dallas Turner with the 17th overall pick, adding firepower to a pass rush that needed a spark.

Quarterback Sam Darnold, newly acquired to lead the Vikings’ offense, faces pressure to make an immediate impact. He'll be leaning on the talents of All-Pro wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who remains one of the most dangerous weapons in the league. The connection between Darnold and Jefferson could be pivotal in setting the tone for Minnesota's season.

Giants Look to Rebound in Centennial Year

Celebrating their 100th season, the Giants enter 2024 with renewed determination under Head Coach Brian Daboll. The team finished 6-11 last year and made sweeping changes to their roster to reignite their competitive spirit. The addition of rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers, taken sixth overall, injects a jolt of speed and playmaking ability to an offense that struggled to find rhythm in 2023. The Giants also traded for star edge rusher Brian Burns, aiming to solidify a pass rush that was inconsistent last year.

Quarterback Daniel Jones, entering a critical season for his career, will need to step up with new play-calling duties handled by Daboll himself. The offensive line, featuring new additions like guards Jon Runyan Jr. and Greg Van Roten, will be tasked with providing Jones the time to make plays and build trust with his young receiving corps.

            Key Matchups to Watch

Vikings' Offensive Line vs. Giants' Pass Rush: Minnesota’s offensive tackles, Christian Darrisaw and Brian O'Neill, will face a formidable duo in Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux, not to mention NFL star Dexter Lawrence II. The Vikings’ ability to keep Darnold upright will be crucial for their offensive efficiency.

Giants' Receivers vs. Vikings' Secondary: With Malik Nabers making his NFL debut and Darius Slayton stepping up as a reliable target, the Giants’ receivers will test Minnesota’s secondary, which is led by safety Harrison Smith and cornerback Byron Murphy Jr.

            Players to Watch

Justin Jefferson (Vikings): The star receiver will look to exploit the Giants’ secondary and extend his reputation as a game-changer.
Brian Burns (Giants): The newly acquired edge rusher aims to make an immediate impact in front of the home crowd and set the tone for New York’s defense.
Malik Nabers (Giants): The rookie wideout’s debut is highly anticipated, with fans eager to see if he can live up to the hype and provide the spark this offense needs.
            Game Outlook

Both teams are poised for an intense battle that could set the stage for their respective seasons. The Vikings will look to control the game with a balanced offensive attack and test the revamped Giants defense. Meanwhile, the Giants are counting on their new-look offense and aggressive pass rush to dictate the tempo. This matchup promises to be a chess match between O'Connell’s offensive schemes and Daboll’s defensive adjustments.

Kickoff is set for Sunday at 1:00 PM ET at MetLife Stadium. Fans can expect a hard-fought contest as both teams vie for a statement win to start the 2024 campaign.

Giants Survive Jones Blunder, Scare Late, to Beat Vikings 12-10

East Rutherford, NJ – The New York Giants held on in a nail-biter to secure a 12-10 victory over the Minnesota Vikings, kicking off their 100th anniversary season with a win at MetLife Stadium. Despite a late scare following a costly red-zone interception by Daniel Jones, the Giants’ defense held strong, allowing the team to escape with a gritty Week 1 victory.

Tyrone Tracy Jr. Starts Giants’ Celebration with a Bang

The Giants wasted no time putting points on the board, with rookie running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. capping off an impressive opening drive by barreling into the endzone for a 4-yard touchdown. It marked Tracy’s first career touchdown and gave the Giants an early 6-0 lead, setting the tone for what would be a defensive battle.

Giants’ Defense Steps Up, Dominates the Vikings’ Offense

New York’s defense was the star of the night, holding the Vikings to just 220 total yards and racking up three sacks. Newly acquired edge rusher Brian Burns, star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence III, and veteran Rakeem Nunez-Roches each notched a sack, keeping Minnesota’s offense off-balance and limiting big plays.

“The defense really stepped up and played tough,” said Giants Head Coach Brian Daboll. “We know this group has what it takes to win these close games, and they proved that tonight.”

Late Game Drama: Jones’ Interception Gives Vikings New Life

The Giants looked ready to put the game away in the fourth quarter, up 9-3 and driving deep into Vikings territory. But a critical error from Daniel Jones almost proved costly. With just eight minutes left in the game, Jones attempted a pass to rookie Malik Nabers in the end zone, only for it to be intercepted, swinging the momentum back to Minnesota. The Vikings capitalized, marching down the field to score their first touchdown of the game, taking a 10-9 lead with just four minutes remaining.

Gano’s Clutch Kick and a Defensive Stand

In a tense final drive, the Giants responded by driving down the field to set up Graham Gano for a 36-yard field goal with a minute left. Gano’s kick sailed through the uprights, giving New York a 12-10 edge.

The Vikings made one last push, but with no timeouts and only seconds on the clock, they were tackled in bounds as the clock ran out, sealing a hard-fought victory for the Giants.

                Injuries to Key Offensive Players

Not all the news was positive for the Giants. Wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson and running back Devin Singletary both exited early with injuries. Their status for Week 2 remains uncertain, adding pressure to an already thin Giants offense.

                Game Leaders

                Daniel Jones: 19/26, 182 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT
Tyrone Tracy Jr.: 18 attempts, 71 yards, 1 TD
Malik Nabers: 7 catches, 84 yards

With the victory, the Giants start the season 1-0, celebrating their centennial year with a win. Next week, they’ll look to build on this defensive momentum as they face another tough NFC opponent.

Thanks! The gameplan worked to perfection: stop the run and have Darnold have to beat us through the air. He's pretty low rated on the out of the box roster - I was pretty confident going into this one. Jayden Daniels is a 77 OVR, so I'm expecting a bigger challenge next week.

BTW quick change in programming: Eli2Harrison released his draft classes for this year's version of the game. I've downloaded them and will be using them moving forward.

Giants Look to Stay Unbeaten as Commanders, Rookie QB Daniels Await in Week 2 Showdown

Washington, D.C. – Riding high after a gritty Week 1 win over the Minnesota Vikings, the New York Giants head to Fed-Ex Field to face the Washington Commanders in an NFC East showdown. As both teams look to make early statements, a subtext hangs over the matchup: rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, taken four spots ahead of the Giants in the 2024 NFL Draft, will be looking to make his mark against the team that reportedly had interest in him.

Defense Leads the Way for Giants

In their season opener, the Giants leaned heavily on a stellar defensive performance to secure a 12-10 victory. Big Blue's defense set the tone, holding Minnesota to just 220 total yards while sacking quarterback Sam Darnold three times. New addition Brian Burns, along with Dexter Lawrence II and Rakeem Nunez-Roches, all brought down Darnold, helping the Giants build a defensive identity they’ll look to carry into Washington.

“They were tough, physical, and determined,” said Giant's Defensive Coordinator Shane Bowen of his unit. “We’re going to need that same energy every week, especially against a division opponent like Washington.”

                          Key Absences Challenge Both Teams

Both teams are dealing with significant injuries to key players. For the Giants, wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson and running back Devin Singletary—who each left last week’s game—were placed on injured reserve this week, leaving New York to rely on rookie Tyrone Tracy Jr. and a younger receiving corps led by Malik Nabers.

The Commanders, meanwhile, will be without top offensive weapons Austin Ekeler and Jahan Dotson, testing their depth and putting additional pressure on Daniels in his second start.

Commanders Rely on Rookie QB to Spark Offense

After dropping a close 20-17 contest in Week 1, the Commanders are counting on their rookie quarterback, Jayden Daniels, to lead them to their first win. Daniels showed flashes of his potential in his debut, posting 198 passing yards and a touchdown, while Washington scored on every red zone trip. Head Coach Dan Quinn praised his young quarterback’s poise, though he knows Daniels will face a tall task against a physical Giants defense.

“Jayden’s been as advertised—calm, confident, and ready to go,” said Quinn. “The Giants will challenge us, and he’s got to be ready to take what they give him.”

                          Key Matchups to Watch

Giants’ Ground Game vs. Commanders’ Run Defense: The Giants ran for 172 yards last week and will likely lean on Tracy Jr. and their ground game again, especially with the Commanders allowing 167 rushing yards in Week 1.

Jayden Daniels vs. Giants’ Pass Rush: With Burns, Lawrence, and the rest of the Giants defensive line eager to pressure the rookie, Daniels will need to stay poised in the pocket and limit mistakes against a Giants front that has already proven disruptive.

Malik Nabers’ Role in Giants Offense: After leading the team with 84 receiving yards in his debut, Nabers is quickly emerging as a go-to target for Daniel Jones. His ability to stretch the field could be pivotal in testing Washington’s secondary.

                          Game Outlook

The Giants are slight underdogs in Washington, with the Commanders favored by 2.5 points. However, New York’s defensive intensity and ability to control the clock on offense could give them the edge against an opponent still finding its identity with a rookie quarterback at the helm.

Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM ET on FOX. Fans can expect a hard-hitting contest between two teams eager to set the tone for the rest of the season in what promises to be a closely contested NFC East rivalry game.

Commanders Capitalize on Giants’ Mistakes, Hand New York a 35-10 Loss

Washington, D.C. – The New York Giants suffered a harsh wake-up call in their second game of the season, falling 35-10 to the Washington Commanders in a game marred by costly mistakes and turnover woes. Quarterback Daniel Jones had a day to forget, throwing four interceptions as the Giants fell to 1-1, while Washington rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels shined in his home debut.

                              Early Promise, Quick Collapse

The Giants got off to a promising start, with backup running back Eric Gray finding the end zone early to give New York a 7-0 lead. But Washington responded quickly, with Daniels orchestrating a pair of impressive touchdown drives, including a 73-yard bomb to Jamison Crowder that showcased the young quarterback’s arm strength and accuracy.

The Giants’ defense managed to keep the game close as the half drew to a close, with rookie cornerback Andru Phillips blocking a field goal attempt that kept the score at 14-7 heading into halftime.

                              Second-Half Struggles and Turnovers

The wheels began to come off for the Giants in the second half. On the opening drive, Jones underthrew rookie receiver Malik Nabers on a deep route, leading to his second interception of the game. The offense struggled to find any rhythm, and Nabers ended the day with just two catches for a mere 10 yards. Darius Slayton, New York’s most productive receiver of the day with five catches for 58 yards, left the game early with a dislocated thumb, further compounding the Giants’ woes.

Washington capitalized on New York’s mistakes, with Commanders’ safety Jeremy Chinn intercepting Jones and returning it for a pick-six to extend the lead. Jones’ fourth interception of the day summed up a difficult outing, as he finished with a stat line of 17 completions on 33 attempts for 165 yards, zero touchdowns, and four interceptions.

"We just didn’t execute. Too many mistakes, too many turnovers – you can’t win games like that," said Head Coach Brian Daboll after the game. "We have to go back, look at the tape, and figure out where we went wrong."

                              Ground Game Disparity

On the ground, the Giants struggled to get anything going, with Tyrone Tracy held to 43 yards on 11 carries and Gray adding 18 yards on five carries. In contrast, Washington’s rushing attack provided balance, as they racked up 107 yards on 28 carries, allowing Daniels to maintain control of the game and make big plays downfield.

                              Daniels Shines in Division Debut

Jayden Daniels was electric, going 18-of-21 for 253 yards and three touchdowns, including the deep strike to Crowder and two other scoring passes. Despite the Giants sacking him four times – two from Brian Burns and one each from Bobby Okereke and Azeez Ojulari – Daniels demonstrated poise and accuracy throughout, protecting the football and keeping his team in the driver’s seat.

Final Score: Commanders 35, Giants 10

                              Game Leaders

WSH Jayden Daniels: 18/21, 253 yards, 3 TD
WSH Brian Robinson Jr.: 24 att, 85 yards
WSH Jamison Crowder: 5 rec, 112 yards, 2 TD

With the loss, the Giants return home with questions about their offense and the need for more consistent play from Daniel Jones, who must cut down on turnovers to keep New York competitive. The Giants will look to regroup and find answers as they prepare for another road battle next week against the 0-2 Cleveland Browns.
