Will Online Lag be an issue? - Operation Sports Forums

Hey everyone, just wanted to let you all know OS now has an official Discord that you can join right now. We’ve kicked around Discords for individual games in the past, but it felt like the right time to make it more of an official thing.

Steve and I have wanted to get this going for a bit because we obviously still hear from y’all who are unhappy with some stuff on the forums, plus when there are forum outages we still want to have a place for everyone to hang. My overarching goal for the longer term is to have both Discord and the forums ultimately work together. There are some logistical issues with the vBulletin forums that don’t allow things to sync right with Discord so there will be a little maneuvering as we try to get mods and forum members any proper roles/tags they need on the Discord, but we can work through that stuff easily enough as people join.

Our general goal is to give people more options to interact with OS community members, whether that’s Discord, the forums, this newsletter, or improved apps. If people want to stick more to the forums, that’s cool. If people want to stick more to the Discord, that’s also cool. In my perfect world, we do a lot of BSing and day-to-day chatting on the Discord about games and sports, and then more of the “in-depth” discussions or hefty things like long slider breakdowns or analysis of gameplay end up on the forums so that can act as a sort of “best of” area for anything OS community related. That said, you all will ultimately shape how the ecosystem shakes out, I just want to give you spaces you like so you can have a good time with other folks in the community.

The same general rules will apply on the Discord as they do on the forums, and we’ve brought most of the forum categories to the Discord as well so there should not be too much confusion as you navigate around.

With the Operation Sports and Discord announcement now out there, it’s also worth mentioning our OS premium newsletter, which quietly launched a couple of weeks ago. Built off the Not Just Another Roster Update newsletter, it offers a mix of retrospectives, guides, interviews and deeper dives into the sports gaming world—covering both current and classic titles.

This is my biggest concern. I mainly play online and it's very sad that this series has been atrocious in this area. As bad as mlb2k was atleast online was smooth. It's going to be a huge let down if online is still terrible because it says that they don't know how to program for online gameplay. Every single MLB the show on the ps3 has been horrible online. I hope it's been ironed out for the ps4. I plan on running an online league, but if it isn't fixed I won't run anything.

If I were you I wouldn't try playing online on the 6th everyone will be trying to get on all at the same time , better to wait a week or so till everything settles down, JMHO

There was a recent interview with Ramone where he discussed the online situation. They are aware its a mess on PS3 and basically admitted to it being a test for their new online code. He seemed confident that they'll improve it and that it would be better on PS4 out of the box, likely due to PS3 users "testing" out the new online.

If the next patch(s) don't clear things up for the PS3 version I don't have a ton of confidence it'll run smoothly with the day one patch on PS4. Sure the online architecture may be more robust on PS4, but its up to the developers to produce the net code for the games.

The PS4 has almost nothing to do with the quality of an online game. Look at BF4, took weeks/months for it to be stable on PS4, and was broken on other platforms as well.

What he said. Lag will always be an issue. How much or how consistent of an issue cannot be answered yet. I don't know of any online game that doesn't suffer from lag.

I'd have to imagine it will be a lot better with them adding online franchise. If it isn't, it will be a disaster. Like you, I bought a PS4 specifically for The Show to play OF with my buddies.

I don't know. The PS3 copy only sold 59,000 it's first week and still had online issues. If every copy was playing online, that's still about half of what COD manages every night of the week.

I don't think it's an issue of overloading the servers with players.

Thanks for the clear explanation. I do believe the elongated release date is a good thing in terms of letting the PS3 users "test" the online experience as well as the overall experience of the game. It does seem like this crew cares about the quality, but they just haven't found a way to make it work.

I understand that the online experience is one where latency plays a roll, but if it takes away from the integrity of the game then it's a problem. A few spikes here and there is just part of the experience and nothing to complain about.

You're right! When I buy a game, I rarely if ever play offline. To me, the experience of playing against another human is where the fun and competitiveness comes into play. That's what video games are to me nowadays. With that said, online lag IS something that is understandable to a point, and it's never going to be as smooth as offline play. It's funny, the "smoothness" of offline play has actually become unnatural to me.

I am super hyped for this game, man. I have been storing up best buy gift cards left and right for this PS4/MLB The Show purchase. Maybe I am naive to the series, but I have to believe the online experience will be "good" on the PS4.

I was seriously just thinking that! MLB2k on the Xbox 360 was actually great online. There was hardly any lag except when people would intentionally change the camera angles to induce lag. But even then it wasn't too bad. All we can do now is hope that patches continue and that the PS4 version will run smoothly. Cheers!

I'm like you OP and to be honest I am most likely going to wait to buy the PS4 and MLB the Show now until I see reviews or impressions of the online mode the first couple of weeks after release. I'm buying the PS4 for the SHOw but I only really want it for online play. So if the online play is bad then I'm wasting my time with buying the PS4 and the show.

I was going to buy a PS4 a couple weeks ago and get MLB the show May 6th but now I think I'm doing the smart thing and waiting to make sure the online play is not bad like it is on the PS3.

my advice to you is just wait until all the others here who already have the PS4 and is going to get the SHOW no matter what. They will test out the online mode for us. I'm sure they will let us know if it sux or not.

Ah! That'll be so hard to do. I think I've hyped it up so much in my mind that I won't be able to resist. What makes it even easier is I have about 300 dollars in best buy gift cards

I'm trying to picture myself playing offline but I just dont see that being the case. Worst comes to worst, il be 200 bucks down the drain and have a PS4, even though this little voice in my head is telling me this isn't going to be a good idea hahaha. I'm a huge baseball fan also so idk, I'm throwing up my hands on this one and treating myself.
