My question is: what would SCEA do if he gets called up to the MLB? Could they put him in the game as a "switch pitcher" a la a switch hitter? It would really be unfortunate if he he had to be created as just a RHP or LHP.

Switch Pitcher: Pat Venditte
Pat Venditte has been called up to AAA by the Yankees and right now he's at the top of their depth chart in terms of "lefty" relievers. Its starting to look like he might actually get called up if he has success in AAA or if Thornton gets injured/struggles.

Re: Switch Pitcher: Pat Venditte
He would be though, if he did make it and actually established himself this year it would at least be next years game before they could implement the necessary additions to make it possible.
Either way though it's highly unlikely they do it anyway for just one non star player.

Re: Switch Pitcher: Pat Venditte
It could be as simple as him being set to LHP vs LHB, RHP vs RHB. But that would have to be for future games. Could be done, but is it worth it for one player that might not even stick in the MLB for 2015 and beyond (if he makes it this year)? I'd honestly say it isn't worth it from a customer perspective. There are more pressing matters imo.Last edited by MrOldboy; 05-21-2014, 01:24 AM.Comment

Re: Switch Pitcher: Pat Venditte
I would think they would have him throwing both ways in the game. However, it wouldn't be implemented this year if he gets to the show and I think he would have to make a contribution to the Yankees bullpen for them to take the trouble to do it. I think one thing he has going for him is that he plays for the Yankees, as a result I think they will take their time on him. If he played for the A's he would throw from one side...no love.Comment

Re: Switch Pitcher: Pat Venditte
This is not a criticism of the OP, but there are about a million other pressing issues that I'd rather see SCEA spend the money and man hours on that would otherwise be required to implement this.Comment

Re: Switch Pitcher: Pat Venditte
Just when my bitterness towards that subject goes away you have to bring it up! Haha but in all seriousness he is leading baseball in WAR and is right up there in all of the defensive metrics.Comment

We probably shouldn't hijack the thread, but are you talking about Josh Donaldson (3B)?Comment

Re: Switch Pitcher: Pat Venditte
And what's the problem? Although a 62 is a little low, it's not off by much. He has a career FLD% of .955 (currently .952, or #258), and a dWAR of only 1.5 (2+ is considered good for a starter).
His dWAR last season wasn't even good enough to land him in the top 10 (Pedroia was #10 with 2.2)
I've adjusted his fielding rating to 68 in The Show, and he's currently a .948 fielder, which is pretty spot on.Comment

Also a correction from my earlier post since I was lazy and didn't do any research he is 2nd in MLB in WAR. 1st in the AL in that category.Comment

Re: Switch Pitcher: Pat Venditte
I agree with you on that. However, when you look at him compared to the other third basemen he is a bit undervalued. This season he has the best RF/9 out of all MLB third basemen. He also leads all third basemen in defensive runs saved (last season he was 3rd behind Machado and Longoria). If you watch Donaldson play a large portion of his miscues are of the throwing variety not the fielding variety. However, in a videogame it is hard to replicate throwing errors in user played games so they had to drop him somewhere. This conversation is not geared towards what he is doing this season since that doesn't reflect in his ratings. So in the end, shout out to ShaBoomer for the great points.

I agree, he is a very good defender. And I'm sure his numbers will get better over time as he plays more (he doesn't have enough games played at 3B yet to qualify for a lot of official lists). Also, who knows how many advanced metrics are a factor in what happens in the game.
As a side note, is there any kind of guide to explain how the ratings work? What I mean is, when I raise/lower a rating how much impact is that having?
When I make adjustments I tend to use increments of 2 or 5, play/sim a week, and check to see what's changed. Sometimes it's really hard to tell, especially for defensive stats.
I also check the weekly roster updates and weekly stats to see what the official changes are. There's too many players to keep track of them all, but I try and keep the AL in line as best I can.Comment

Re: Switch Pitcher: Pat Venditte
Also, to get back on to the thread topic...
What I initially wanted to say in this post was I'm also curious to see how Venditte is handled in upcoming versions of The Show. I think it would be cool to have the ability to be a switch pitcher.
I guess the MLB would have to create the same rule as MiLB did.Comment
