    Spot Starts

Do any of you guys use your "6th-man" in the rotation for spot starts besides if one of your 1-5 starters has a day to day injury? For example, Verlander has been off lately in real life and I saw on reddit that a few people were saying that he should miss his next start, just to get some extra rest in.

I dont usually. Only time the 6th starter plays besides long relief is if he replaces a starter for injury or the starter sucks so he is moving to BP.

Oh and Verlander sucks its not him being off. 8 WINS IN A ROW!!!!

I will sadly agree with you on that

As for spot starts, yea.. You can either have a guy get a few extra days rest, or you can just bump your entire rotation back a day.

Now that you've brought this up, I might actually try it.

I'd be more inclined to go with a 4 man rotation and occasionally using spot starts.

I've never done a spot start, but I skip the 5th staters day often. As Detroit did in real life, with as many days off that they had in the beginning of the year, I skipped a few of Drew Smyly's starts.

I do the same, 4 days rest then it is time to go-use your better pitchers more often. I have done the spot starts though but usually from the taxi squad rather than a real swingman. If my #4 had a good but long start and he is not refreshed and I want to see a guy in AAA of smth.

You guys seem like you are over 40 years old and old school baseball purists.

I have made a spot start and pushed back the rotation a day if nobody was fully rested up.

I'm 27. Statistics have shown there's no significant difference between 4 or 5 days of rest. If you don't have a good 5th starter then there's no point imo of using a 5 man.

                  Re: Spot Starts

^^^Using a 4 man only gives 3 days rest unless an off day is on the horizon. I had multiple stretches on the schedule where I had 9,10,13 in a row before an off day.

If I had an off day ahead, I would tend to leave Tanaka in longer than if I didn't have an off day before his next start.

Much like the real life Yanks before Pineda, Nova, and CC went down, I had 2 guys who could start in bullpen along with Betances, Kelley, Thornton, Cabral, and D-Rob.

I used Nuno and Phelps quite a bit to save the pen if I was losing by more than 3 and had to make a change.

Once I hit the postseason, I went with a 4 man rotation in ALCS but used a 3 man in WS.
