Is it really the same? I'm not convinced it is.

I mean, are the stats and AI produced on All-Star the same as those produced on Legend?
    No...

So why would either of those be the same as the stats and AI produced in CPU vs CPU, where there is no difficulty level at all? How could it?

Surely there must be some differences, to account for the fact that the difficulty variable is completely removed from the equation.

Well....difficulty makes no difference in MoM games OR CPU vs CPU games......so it's set at something(likely all star) as default.
But the game engine used in those instances is not the sim engine....it's the gameplay engine.
It's not there is NO difficulty....it's just locked at one of them.
Changing the difficulty on the front end only comes into play if you choose a side.

I get that, but the difficulty level normally affects the gameplay that is output by the engine. Every level produces unique results, so to say that CPU vs CPU is the same engine... I mean there's a piece of information missing here.

It's the same as the engine on which difficulty level? Or is it different from all of them? Since there is no diff level at all, is it a 6th variant of the gameplay engine, distinguished from the 5 difficulty level outputs?

Think about it algebraically... If putting All-Star mode into the equation gives you X, and inserting Legend gives you Y, then what does no difficulty at all give you? It can't be both X and Y. It probably is neither.

Like I said...it's not that it's NO difficulty.....it's locked on one of them(for manage mode at least......you cannot swap control of teams)..likely all star. Maybe if you start a CPU vs CPU game...it's all star vs all star or vet vs vet or whatever your settings are.....I'm not a CPU vs CPU player really.
But the engine is not the sim engine(the one you get from the schedule screen)

I just realized I didn't account for Quick Counts. That must be where the weirdness is coming from.

Ah, well in that case you're right where you should be. QCs reduce at-bats to basically 1 pitch. The average number of pitches per at-bat in MLB is a little under 4.

Thus, if you multiply your HBP total by 3-ish, you get a number right in line with the other teams in your franchise.

That more or less explains it. Duh.

At this point I feel like a QC junkie. I know it's bad for me, I know it gives me results that are less than desirable, but I've been using it for three months straight and I can't quite wean myself off it.

Yeah....Bobhead sounds like he hit that one on the head.
Makes sense....less pitches seen...less chances for HBP.

                  Like you...I'm hooked on QC...
A little fine tuning and adding a couple of more counts would make it perfect IMO.
