Re: Sony Shutting Down MLB 14 Online Servers
I actually think it's pretty shady too. I mean, you are forcing people to basically let go of 14 and we all know in sports games, not everyone buys each iteration. You might call that "smart" and that's your opinion of course but it's also abandoning the 14 fanbase awfully quick.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

Re: MLB 14 The Show Online Servers Closing on June 18th
On one hand, as someone in the IT field, I gotta believe the cost is pretty low. But I don't know what infrastructure/hardware is needed just to run and what kind of manpower they need to have staffed to keep it running.
On the other hand, I have to wonder how many users will be online with MLB 14 come June? A few thousand? A few hundred? Maybe the cost is not worth it from the business side of things, even if on the technical side the Sony San Diego team wants to keep some online up and running for the previous year's game. It may be outside of their control, the decision may come from higher up.
all speculation here...
I guess it just depends on what people think is acceptable in terms of online support for a sports game. I'm sure The Show is the least popular game out of all the big sports games, but if Madden, NBA, and FIFA decided that 11-14 months of server support was enough, I wonder how that would go over. Again, different audience and platform size, I get it. People still paid $60 for the game, though.
I've always thought that two years is a fair amount of time, regardless of the game. Some people are not going to buy a game every year.Comment

What company doesn't want you to buy their newest version of their product? It's a pretty common business practice.
It makes sense that the sooner they shut down 14 servers, the smoother 15 servers will run. And maybe this is necessary for their Online servers overhaul we've been hearing about.Comment

As much as I like The Show, shutting down the online servers earlier than last year's game is a money grab by SCEA. I understand they are running a business and the main reason to to be successful in business is to make money. We are the consumers of their product and we have a choice to buy or not to buy this year's version of The Show. I choose not to buy MLB The Show 15 until I finish my online franchise, which I have completed 21 games of a 162 game season. Shutting down the servers in June does not allow me much time to finish my franchise.Last edited by TLasorda; 03-20-2015, 01:57 PM.Comment

I am all for this if the 15 servers are noticeably better. Allocate the resources where they should be. I understand some people will be upset with this. But IMO there is no reason not to buy this years version. It does suck for the people in the middle of an online franchise though.NHL: Rangers

I'm still upset, as I'm in the middle of season 3 of an online franchise, however after doing some research I guess I have nobody to blame but myself for assuming they'd be up longer. See below
- MLB 09 servers down 03/17/2010
- MLB 10 servers down 03/22/2011
- MLB 11 servers down 05/10/2012
- MLB 12 servers down 09/15/2013
- MLB 13 servers down 11/06/2014
- MLB 14 servers down 06/18/2015
I assumed the later decommissioning date was the norm, and I guess really it is if you look at the dates historically. Still sucks.Comment

Exactly. That's what I said. The later decommissioning date still seems to be the norm compared to what it used to be, but still sucks that its not as late as last years.Comment

Re: MLB 14 The Show Online Servers Closing on June 18th
Everyone knows the servers shut down at some point, I don't think that is the point. I know Online franchise/Online leagues aren't that popular just from reading the boards - anytime anyone poses a question about online franchise improvements in 15 or complains about issues with it in 14, it is ignored or gets very little play.
I get it. The majority of players do offline franchise - that is fine. I am an online franchise player in order to play with a friend who lives quite a long distance from me. Offline franchise doesn't do it for us because we like to compete against each other and by competing versus each other it keeps our interest in a 162 game season and we are able to make it through the "dog days" that usually lead most to abandoning the season. We are 30 or so games into our 3rd season 162 game season. With this news, we likely will not finish the 3rd season.
From a previous post it looks like servers were shut down even earlier than last years 11/6 shut down. But I just think SCEA screws online franchise players. I think it idiotic that they touted online franchise at 14's launch but do nothing to improve it in 15, virtually offer no support for it in 14 (at least on the PS3 side not sure on the PS4), are not offering a way to carry forward online franchises started in 14 to 15, and now are shutting down the servers early. I would think with this feature being newly introduced in 14 they would EXTEND the server time to prolong the online franchise experience. Isn't that the point of a franchise? To carry it forward as many seasons as possible?
I am also a pure analog hitter so right now I have very little motivation to buy 15. I know I likely will at some point and upgrade to PS4 but buying the console, the game, paying $50 bucks for online access doesn't seem worth it to me right now.Comment
