Re: Outfield Choice Of Fielder Often Wrong!
I switched to auto fielding last year for pretty much the same reasons as you guys: I sometimes found the fielder choice disorientating and I was tired of my own ineptitude leading to silly errors in the outfield. More than anything I want The Show to replicate what I see in a real game, and that part of the gameplay was taking me out of the experience.
Having said that, I've been playing a lot of DD this year -- where auto fielding is disabled -- and it hasn't been so bad. Hopefully I can get accustomed to manual fielding this year and take control of this part of the game again.www.heyimbill.com | sports poster art and other cool stuffComment

This has cost me several runs in DD games since you can't set to auto. In fact, just cost me 2 runs on an easy fly ball that I missed because CPU control gave way to my controls and I raced right past it at 3X the speed I had been traveling. I've rage-quit half a dozen DD games for this and other CPU BS that is just plain killing the game for me.Comment

I always found fielding clunky on this series. But this year is another story. I am having a total blast playing defense. I play DD and am playing online a lot (in a league and with fellow sim OS members). It's a ton of fun.
Pressing L2 if you see your LF highlighted and want your CF to go for the ball is how I have managed the occasional wrong fielder going for it.
But I have only seen this on gap shots (obviously) and I have been able to quickly make that determination. And when I switch to the CF for example he was already running in pursuit as well.
It takes some practice. And yes you will still make human errors. So there is some give and take if you decide to field yourself.
Offline I auto field and manual throw. I want a pure simulation of player ratings deciding defense coupled with my throwing to keep me feeling involved and invested in the play.
Best of both worlds in that regard. Plus I love the clean screen and broadcast immersion of auto fielding and manual throwing.
It's personal preference.Last edited by Armor and Sword; 04-07-2015, 01:29 PM.Now Playing on PS5:

Re: Outfield Choice Of Fielder Often Wrong!
I've never played with auto fielding, so whatever decides the default outfielder this year must have been tweaked somehow. I'm hoping it is just something to adjust to from the way I've played before and not a logic flaw.

Re: Outfield Choice Of Fielder Often Wrong!
I was addicted ever since. So it happened because I felt the fielding controls were inferior to baseball games I played before.
But like I said this year has been a huge surprise. I love fielding again. But when it comes to offline franchise I am too hooked on the smooth, gorgeous game play of auto fielding/maual throwing and the statistical integrity the players ratings have on those settings.
So I get to have lot's of fun in human vs human games fielding again and do my thing in my offline universe with my franchise and classic seasons.
It's awesome.Now Playing on PS5:

Re: Outfield Choice Of Fielder Often Wrong!
I think you guys have convinced me to try the auto-field/manual throw settings. I've lost track of how many extra base hits I've given up to my poor fielding. But I don't know if I can attribute my ineptitude to the CPU initally selecting the wrong fielder, because there are many fly balls that I feel I have the OF positioned underneath properly just to watch it drop right next to him and roll to the wall. I know it takes practice and I'm working on it in Play Now games but once I start my franchise season, the auto fielding/manual throw might just be the ticket. This is my first year playing this title and I know the game has a steep learning curve, which is great; wouldn't want it any other way. I know I just have to keep plugging away and it will come.
I've been with Xbox for years but have grown tired of going without when it comes to video baseball so finally picked up a PS4, largely to play this one game. So far, it's been worth it.Comment

The game is still defaulting to the pitcher on popups in the infield. I know that was supposed to be addressed. Also when you switch to a different fielder the pitcher does not break off and gets in the way most of the time. Actually in general I am noticing this year if two fielders are close to another and switch to the other the CPU controlled fielder still keeps coming over.“The saddest part of life is when someone who gave you your best memories becomes a memory”Comment

Re: Outfield Choice Of Fielder Often Wrong!
I, too, use Auto-Fielding manual throw. Years ago I got frustrated by the constant hits down the line that I couldn't react to/field because of that dumb wave through animation the corner infielders do on balls down the line; that and I also always managed to screw up diving plays, robbing HRs, and playing the ball off the wall; so I switched to Auto Fielding and never gone back. The game feels much smoother and more realistic this way. The fielders are able to live up to their real life counterpart without my poor timing or the game's poor fielding mechanics to screw it up.Comment
