On the other hand, the CPU's defense is nearly perfect in my experience, haha.

Outfielders dive and miss too often, on plays where they shouldn't be diving and missing so blatantly. This problem has been in the game for a while. Not a huge deal, but still sticks out.
Also, in my last season game, I'm down 2-1 in the bottom of the 8th with runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs... Infield doesn't play in???That's more a managerial thing, but still.

For not catching fly balls, try this. Don't push the stick full on every time. Push the stick so the player starts jogging not full sprinting. You want to be jogging into the catch. Look where the ball graphic is and take the best route. Why would you go behind the graphic and then in? That makes no sense. Take the shortest route and don't hold the stick in full out sprint if you are going to get to the graphic before the ball is anywhere near. If it is a fly ball you can settle under then obviously stop in the circle and wait until you catch it. Honestly if you are having issues go and practice.
What I have found wrong with fielding is this, and it's aggrevating as all hell. Just the other day the CPU had a runner on 2nd. CPU hits a liner just shy of the warning track and Torii Hunter makes the catch. What happens, the fielder goes into the stupid wall stopping animation and I wasn't even that close to the wall. Like I said I caught it shy of the warning track and he wasn't even in an all out sprint. It took so long for the animation to play out that the runner on 2nd scored. He was rounding 3rd before I even had the ball halfway to my cutoff man. That should never happen and to me this is nearly inexcusable at this point. For years there has been so much feedback about animations taking too long to play out. I enjoy the fact there is momentum in play on running catches, but this was a play where the wall shouldn't have even been in play. Even if it was there still should have been no way the runner tags and scores all the way from second on a normal liner caught before the warning track.NHL-Minnesota Wild

It's not with first baseman, but I've seen similar plays in which pitchers do not try to cover the home plate as quickly as they should. Example:

Okay this just happened to me will be posting a video link shortly as well as posting it to the bug reporting site MLB 15 has setup. I am playing short stop in RTTS on legend I am winning 5 to 1 in the late innings when the unthinkable ghosting not covering the bag happens. If the game did not look so damn good I probably would have crushed my PS4 just now!

So here is a link to the video. In the video I am the short stop as the ball gets hit I make a break for the second base bag to try and turn a double play but Adrian Gonzales decides to throw the ball while I am still running towards the bag completely breaking the double play.
I am not sure if this is due to the computer loosing in late innings or what but it always seems the CPU tries to make a miracle comeback toward the end.

Interesting that the first baseman not covering first is still happening, it must be difficult to pinpoint the cause. I know I captured it and left notes at CD. this is my biggest issue with the defensive AI. a shot out to my right fielder then he still having time to throw it to the first baseman to ground out the runner. yet hes not sitting on the base so the guy gets a easy single.Toronto Blue Jays

I am starting to realize that Sony SD studio see's MLB The Show as a iterative process. It is most likely aware of all game play issues but needs to keep giving a reason to buy each year! After playing MLB 14 and 15 I think we will see a decent version of gameplay in MLB 18!
I am not sure if licensed equipment was in any previous version of MLB The Show prior to MLB The Show 14 but if it was not and you are telling me a company like Sony which I am sure has lawyer power took this long to get license equipment into the game! I say yeah right it was just to cover the fact that gameplay is so bad they had to do something.
RTTS mode got no love especially if you like to play defense same animation's when on defense. Hell I just found out that while playing short stop and you are holding the runner on second in RTTS the pitcher will never throw you the ball for a pick off play nor can you call for it even though the animation looks like as though the pitcher is going to throw you the ball! The guys in the twitch stream talk about how much they play baseball! Where are those twitch streams at now that the game is out?

For example, grounders in between the 1st and 2nd baseman. If I don't dive then I get the animation where my fielder reaches ever so slightly and the ball is 3 feet away from him. If I dive, then I dive way past the ball. Positioning wise, I still feel like outfielders are way too close to the infield in most cases.
And as far as the catcher making tags, do you let the CPU make the animation for tagging out the runner or do you take control of the catcher, turn around and apply tag yourself? When I try the ladder, the catcher usually does something funky (as the videos show).PS5Comment
