Grichuk saves the day! Cards win 1-0

With 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, Rosenthal throws a 2-2 fastball Domingo Santana that is belted to left center and looks to be the tying homerun. But Grichuk had other ideas. Grichuk sprints to the wall, climbs it and robs Santana of the game tying homerun in Miller Park. Cards win 1-0.

Jaime Garcia looked like the Jaime Garcia of old going 6 innings allowing no runs on 5 hits. He also struck out 4. Jonathan Broxton came into the 7th, but after recording the first out, walked the next two batters. Miguel Socolovich was quickly called into the game and fanned the next two hitters. Siegrist and Walden pitched a perfect 8th, and Rosenthal recorded his league leading 20th save in the 9th.

Alex Rios was pefect at the plate going 3 for 3 with a walk. This is what Matheny and the organization had been waiting on with Rios, who has struggled up til now at the plate. Hopefully this performance will carry over for the rest of the year. Matt Holliday went 1 for 4 while extending his hitting streak to 18 games. Randal Grichuk was also the hero at the plate going 2 for 4 and driving in the only run of the ballgame with a RBI single in the 3rd.

Cardinals look for the sweep tomorrow with Carlos Martinez facing off against Gavin Gonzalez.

Cardinals lose to Brew Crew 4-3

On a night that was mediocre at best for pitching and hitting, the Cardinals fell to the Brewers 4-3 in Milwaukee. Carlos Martinez wasn't his normal dominant self as he allowed 3 runs on 6 hits in 6 innings. But he didn't get a decision on the night. Johnathan Broxton took the loss as he allowed a pinch hit homerun in the bottom of the 7th that put the Brewers up for good, 4-3.

Randal Grichuk was the star on offense for the second game in a row as he hit a 2 out bases clearing double in the 4th that tied the game at 3-3. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, Grichuk was the only one that seemed to bring his bat to the game. Matt Holliday took the day off as the Cardinals try to give the 36 year old some rest for the stretch.

The Cardinals still maintain a 4 game lead in the division over the Cubs.

Next up is a 3 game series with the Giants in St.Louis. Adam Wainwright will face Johnny Cueto.

BREAKING CARDINALS NEWS

The Cardinals have put Brandon Moss on optional assignment waivers as they attempt to send him down to Memphis to see if he can find his stroke. He is only hitting .200 in 51 games played this year. He does have 7 homeruns and 20 RBI, but he has a negative war on the year.

The Cardinals have called up Matt Adams who has seemed to find his stroke as he is hitting .351 in Memphis and will replace Moss on the 25 man roster. Adams was sent down to Springfield earlier this year as he struggled to even make contact to begin the year. Adams will hit 6th in the lineup. Randal Grichuk will move into the clean up role.

Using OSFM 2.5 40 man rosters i decided to start a Cubs franchise. Lost Jason Heyward in June to a torn rotator cuff. Pulled off some trades that netted me Rob Refsnyder & CC Sabathia from the Yankees. Picked up Zach Duke & Brett Lawrie from the White Sox. Yonder Alonzo from Oakland. Robinson Chirinos Frank Lopez & Shawn Tolleson from Texas.

Traded Hector Rendon after getting Tolleson. Finished the year 95-67 Jake Arrieta finished 20-7 on the year. John Lackey & Jason Hammel each have 12 wins on the season. Anthony Rizzo had 42 homers trails Bryce Harper by two homers in the NL. Josh Donaldson lead the majors with 44. Play the Mets in the NLDS. Dodgers finished withe best record in the NL Jays finished with best record in the AL. The Rangers White Sox Giants & Nationals are wild card teams.

It is now July and the Houston Astros have a steady hold of the AL West with a 53-31 record! The Astros currently hold the best record in the MLB and are exceeding all expectations from the pre-season.

The monster that is Carlos Correa is in full swing and is batting .282 with a .512 slugging, he is among the leaders in the AL for home runs with 20! (He has also made it up to a 93 overall so far)

Jose Altuve has slowed down a bit from after being red hot in early June where he was batting over .300 . He however is still doing very good batting .272 .

Evan Gattis is lighting up the AL with a .286 BA and is slugging .522 with 22 Home Runs also one of the top hitters in the AL.

Jason Castro is finally starting to cool off after having an amazing first quarter of the season and is now batting .274 but lucky for him it is a contract year and he is up for a big time extension.

Tyler White has gotten his bat going just in time too as he was on the hot seat as A.J. Reed was going crazy in AAA, but Reed went cold and White got hot and he for now is holding down 1st base.

Colin Moran who was called up after Luis Valbuena got injured (Again lucky for him Reed was on a cold streak otherwise he would have gotten the call) he is playing very well despite seeing limited playing time as he is platooning with Marwin Gonzalez. Moran is hitting .280 in 50 AB's.

Now onto my #1 prospect, Alex Bregman he was tearing it up in AA batting .337 in the month of June and has been called up to AAA, he may get to see a major league appearance later in the year.

Dallas Keuchel is having an amazing year, I have no words for what he is doing right now, he has a 1.59 ERA and 0.94 WHIP. I may have to tone down his ratings or something or just go with the flow but he is just going crazy.

Lance McCullers too is having an amazing year with a 2.59 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. (Currently an 88 but his potential is an 86 but morale is boosting him up)

Lance McCullers is currently 2nd in the Cy Young race with Dallas Keuchel in 3rd. Marco Estrada is 1st with a 2.26 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. Something tells me an Astro will win this award though.

Tyler White has moved into 3rd for the ROTY race but he will likely not win it as he is playing on borrowed time due to the upcoming of Reed. Still has a chance though.

Evan Gattis is currently 2nd in the LF Gold Glove award race. It is looking like Alex Gordon will likely get the award at this point.

Gattis is also 2nd in Silver Slugger for DH's but this will likely go to Edwin Encarnacion.

Carlos Correa is currently 1st in the race for Silver Slugger at SS.

As it stands now here is who I should have in the All-Star game:

Dallas Keuchel
Lance McCullers (Maybe)
Jose Altuve
Carlos Correa
Evan Gattis (Maybe)
Carlos Gomez (Maybe)


Keuchel, Altuve, and Correa all lead their respective positions in voting.

I will be playing 1 more game before the All-Star game.

A few questions though:

1) I am using the OSFM rosters and am at a loss on what I want to do with so many good infield prospects. I want to know if anyone of the following could play 3rd base: Tyler White, Alex Bregman, A.J. Reed. If you need rating let me know.

2) A bit pre-mature but when I get to the off season, how do I extend guys contracts that are still under my control (Renewable and Arbritation)

Scooter, it's really cool that you're seeing the ups and downs of the season with different guys getting hot and cold for extended stretches.

Your season with Correa is nearly identical to my season with Seager. He's hitting about .285 with 21 HR at the end of August and he's really nice defensively. As a righty, I bet he's really fun to use in HOU with that short porch!

Regarding the defensive option, I stated this in another thread and got confirmation from kblover: there seems to be some under the hood differentiation between players that allows guys with very similar ratings to play differently in the field, regardless of their stated primary and secondary positions.

My example is Seager and Kike Hernandez. Seager is SS 1st and then 3B. I put him at SS, he's a great fielder. I put him at 3B, he misses routine plays at a noticeable clip--more than Justin Turner, whose ratings are similar.

I put Kike at 3B, whose real 1st position is CF and who has 3B listed along with LF/RF/2B/SS as secondary positions, and he shines. Visually, he's clearly better at 3B than Seager. I put him at SS and he shines too; he's just as good as Seager but with a lesser arm, despite being an OF in terms of primary position.

So long story short, you should plays some of the guys you're considering moving at their new prospective positions and let the eyeball test tell you if you can make the move or if it's not going to work.

If you wind up with a guy who looks surprisingly good after a positional move, then that's great. If you wind up with a logjam and have some guys who can't move without taking a big hit, then trade a couple away for pitching or other areas of need.

Thanks I will try this once I call them up. And it is an absolute blast to play with Correa he can do it all which is just too much fun. Have had some really exciting games in this first season. This is my first year really playing the show for extended stretches and I'm absolutely loving it.

I have had 3 walk off home runs in the past month and a half 2 of which were close comebacks in the 9th inning. The last one was a two run shot with Tyler white to have us beat the angels by 1.

Scooter, have you considered moving Correa to 3rd to make room for Bregman?

Correa to 3rd, while Carlos himself does not want that, has been discussed as an option for more than a year.

Just a thought.

Just got the closest I have ever been to a perfect game on any baseball game, and the funny thing is, it was against my favorite team, the Astros.

Sonny Gray was dominant. He struck out 13 batters. The rest of them grounded out straight to someone, or popped it straight up to the infield.

The best part about it was the crowd. They nailed it. The intensity was dang near overwhelming. During the 7th inning, I struck out the side and the crowd went insane. The commentators talked about how I was only 6 outs away. The 8th inning, Rasmus hit a soft ground ball toward 2nd, but we were shifted, so Lowrie had to run up full speed, grab the ball bare-handed and fire it to 1st for the out. I struck out the last batter of the inning, and again, the crowd went insane.

In the last inning, I seriously had goose bumps. I struck out Valbuena on an excellent change up that dropped off the table. Then I struck out Gattis with a high fastball out of the zone (he went for it, exactly like the real Gattis). At this point literally every person in the crowd was standing. People in the front row were turning around and pleading to everyone else to get even louder.

But with 2 outs in the 9th inning, I hung a 2-strike change up a little bit, and Castro sent to right field to break the perfect game up.

To say I was disappointed would be a major understatement.

Still, after 25 games with the calendar now on May 1st, my Athletics are 17-9 and only 1 game out of first in the West.

Bullpen blows it, Adams saves it..Cards 6-4

Cardinal fans were tested with a roller coaster ride as the Cardinals came from behind in the 8th to win the game against the Giants 6-4. With a 3-2 lead going into the 8th, Matheny turned the ball over to the bullpen. Kevin Siegrist is facing Diego Santana who is making his major league debut, and on the 2nd pitch that he sees, Santana belts one to right center tying the game at 3. Siegrist manages to get Span and Panik out on back to back strikeouts. When Posey comes to the plate, Matheny turns the ball to Jordan Walden. Walden proceeds to leave a fastball right down the middle and Buster puts it into the upper deck of left field giving the Giants a 4-3 lead.

But the Cardinals wouldn't go away. In the bottom of the 8th, Matt Carpenter reaches on a throwing error by Panik. Rios manages to strikeout. Holliday, who already extended his hitting streak to 19 games, draws a 4 pitch walk putting two on with 1 out. Grichuk comes to the plate and proceeds to flyout to center. So 2 on with 2 outs, and Peralta is hit by a pitch making it bases loaded with 2 outs. Matt Adams comes to the plate having been hitless on the day. After going down 0-2 in the count, he takes a ball and on the very next pitch, smokes a Sergio Romo slider into the right center gap scoring all three on the bases and giving the Cardinals a 6-4 lead.

Trevor Rosenthal came into the ninth and allowed a hit with one out, but then followed that up by getting Brandon Belt to roll into a 6-4-3 double play to end the ball game.

The Cardinals and Giants face off tomorrow with Michael Wacha facing Jeff Samardzija.

2021 Regular Season Ends
Marlins Win Division, Ready For Playoffs

The Marlins finished 2021 strong, dominating August and September to put away any hopes from the rest of the teams for taking the division away late. In all, the Marlins won 109 games and won the division by 12 over the Mets.

As usual, the Marlins were led by their pitching staff and a few key hitters. On the pitching side resides Damian Boeve, one of the best pitchers in the game. He won the pitching Triple Crown with 21 wins, a 1.76 ERA, and 337 K's. His season was worth 8.9 WAR, which was the MLB best. The pitching Triple Crown was the 2nd in three years for him.

However, in terms of K/9, the Giants Kyle Crick led with 12.3 K/9.

Rookie Curtis Anders posted a strong season with a 3.26 ERA in 88 innings of work. He posted a 2.2 WAR, a nice total for a relief pitcher.

On offense, Bo Winter led all hitters in WAR with a 8.7 mark. He was 2nd in baseball in HR with 41 and 5th in OPS with .992. Chris Davis paced MLB with 47 HR.

Marlins Award Winners

Silver Slugger:

NL MVP:

Other Notable Performers

-Rob Rasmussen of the Blue Jays led starters with 19 losses despite a solid 3.20 ERA.

-Tyler Pike gave his team a horrible season. The Cardinals gave him 141 innings and he posted a -0.3 WAR.

-Rookie SS Edmund Eldridge had it even worse. He put up a -3 WAR in 509 ABs - the worst mark in baseball. Braves rookie 2B Sean Villa was almost as bad with a -2.7 WAR.

-Despite an injury-shortened season, Billy Hamilton still led the league in stolen bases. He had 40 in just 100 games.

-Miguel Sano channeled the spirit of Adam Dunn. He walked 74 times, but struck out 205 times!

-Kyle Crick was #2 in pitching WAR with 8.3. Former Marlins prospect Hunter Harvey produced 7.8 WAR. Shelby Miller led AL pitchers with 8.1 WAR

-Justin Nicolino, another former Marlins prospect, led all pitchers by hitting 2 HR.
