I think it's plausible. For realism consider it from there perspective. The package could be built around 1 of 2 concepts :

-a couple good prospects who will be in MLB soon enough for a window of contention with Trout. Ideally blue chip guys, one hitter and one pitcher.

-or as a means for clearing salary space, where they put him with Pujols (?)

The potential is there, but it depends too much on their record nearer to the deadline as well as Richards' stats and which teams are contending later on/what other arms would be available. That's why it's difficult to answer; a lot can change over the next 40 games or so. I don't think a team constructed like the Angels (win now at all costs) would consider themselves finished while only 7 games under .500 in early June.

        MLB 16 Trade Discussion Thread

Okay I'm doing a nats chise year one 19-17 2.5 games back of first place Marlines that has two of the best pitchers in the season Wei-Yin Chen and Jose Fernandez both have ERA's around 1.5 my next stretch of games are 6 vs MIA and 6 vs NYM (mets are 3.5 behind me) so I feel like it will be a tight race I have Lucas Giolito in AAA and he also has two spot starts this year in two starts has giving up 9 runs and I just don't have a liking for the way he pitches...I am waiting till Late June early July to pull the trigger on a big deal to put me in place for a World Series run but I was looking around and Boston is offering me

        C Christian Vazquez (74 ovr B Pot 25)
RP Carson Smith (82 ovr B Pot 26)
SP Anderson Espinoza (75 ovr B Pot 18!)
I know I might be giving up the best pitching prospect in baseball(I have tanner Roaker as my 5th stater and Joe Ross as my fourth and both are pitching very well) but with those three piece I could set myself up pretty for the future and fill needed holes in my bullpen and at back up Cather with Wilson Ramos Contract coming up and lack of depth at that spot getting a very young good pitching prospect back that could crack the starting 5 by next year..now my two question are would you pull the trade now or wait to see how the rest of the month of May play out with so many important games coming up? And is this a realistic trade in the sense of both teams getting a good deal PS. I'm using the OSFM Hybrid roster

Edit: Boston has one of the better pitching staff number wise with no starting pitcher over 2.79 era and they are in second place at 23-10 Carson Smith has an 2.77 era with 13 IP and 10K's Christian Vazquez has 49 AB with a .224 AVG 1 RBI and 0 Anderson Espinonza is still down in AAA

If I am reading this right you are going to trade Giolito? If so you need to set your sights WAY higher. You shouldn't target a catcher who can't hit, a guy who was traded for Wade Miley, and a lesser pitching prospect.

Giolito is the type of prospect that headlines a deal for pretty much whatever you need.

I don't believe the scenario you have laid out is one that would happen. You rarely if ever see prospect for prospect deals. Teams are going to be hesitant to give you their best pitcher even if they are getting Giolito back. A team getting Giolito would be giving you an upper tier player (read elite) and would be rebuilding. They wouldnt be giving a catching prospect and a pitching prospect.

Sorry if this is a ramble. Maybe others can help you with a scenario that matches what you want, but I just can't find one in my head

To be honest I can't either but I can't think of trade for the life of me that keeps the team intact and adds some relief pitching we need it bad...so if anybody has a trade out there that can possibly work also as a die hard nats fan it's hard to think about trading a guy like Zim or Werth...maybe Espinoza could get moved because I have trea turner as my everyday SS

Id just wait a little while until you see who's buying and who's selling, then go from their. Just see how the market develops

Understood. I just kinda jumped the gun on bringing this into the forum. I got a little antsy and wanted to hear what you guys thought. Ill bring this back up if the Angels are still sucking in July.

Yea I can't either. I was going to say go for Lucroy in Mil but there aren't bullpen pitchers there that I can think of that are above average.

Jeffress is pretty good, so is Will Smith. Outside of that not much though.

I think its realistic they would make a call to re-tool for a season or 2 if the are well out of it. 7 games under .500 in June is too early (look more toward the deadline). Trout is only 24 - they still will have him in his prime in 2 years if they re-tool. Objectively this is the way to go as I don't see them winning it all as they are currently constructed. YMMV and of course they may not see it this way - I'm only suggesting its a plausible decision that a FO might take.

<--This. Giolito is a blue chip prospect who you would use to get a player on the back end of their arb-years (read: rental).

I don't see why a team would trade prospects for Giolito here or why the Nats would realistically deal Giolito for prospects.

In terms of rentals as another poster said you should set your sights at pretty much anyone who is nearing the end of team control and is really good. McCutchen+, for example, or Hosmer+, might be candidates for this approach as they are reaching the end of their contracts or years of team control.

That said, I personally wouldn't necessarily give up Giolito for those specific players unless I really thought they would put me over the top. His long term surplus value is huge.

You could look around who is nearing the end of team controlled years and see whether anything looks plausible.

So im approaching my first off season with the phillies and im contemplating making a run at jose altuve. he's approaching his 6th mlb year and the final year of his contract. im figuring the astros may want to secure something for him if he decides to walk in free agency. i have a couple of package offers and would like to know which would be fair and realistic

If the Astros valued Appel that highly they wouldn't have traded him in the offseason. Also, Maitan is by all accounts headed to Atlanta, so we're starting off on an unrealistic foot. The Astros have a small payroll and would most likely just fork up the coin for Altuve.

Hey all, I am doing a franchise with my Dodgers. I am at the trade deadline and I'm looking into the future. I am thinking of dealing Howie Kendrick, Zach Lee, Okeaya Dickson for Eric Hosmer. Question is should I just move Hosmer to 2B/3B or trade him for either prospects or MLB talent. Im sitting in first place in the NL and will make the playoffs but I am always thinking of the future.
Also, should I try and deal Ryu and Wood or keep them in my rotation. I can get Greg Bird and Gary Sanchez from NYY if i trade both Ryu and Wood.
