    Re: Baserunning

Had a weird glitch on auto base running where the runners chose a strange route to get back to first that resulted in an out!! Play was scored as a ground out to LF!!

After all these years, I've finally decided to try to learn how to baserun and steal bases in play now games/franchise mode. I don't play RTTS. Always wanted a practice mode in MLB the Show just for situational base running and stealing. There's hitting and pitching, but no baserunning/stealing practice mode.

Been trying and still can't figure it out. Is there a visual tutorial somewhere.

1st and 2nd, and I would like to send the person on 2nd to 3rd while leaving the person on 1st. Tried pushing my left analog stick towards 2nd, holding L2. Releasing L2 unfortunately sends both runners.

      1st and 2nd.
      1st and 3rd.
      2nd and 3rd.

How do I individual send a runner. L2 plus left analog stick keeps sending all runners.

1st and 2nd. Also is there a way to cancel the steal (before the runner takes off; pitcher attempts to throw a pick off). Once he starts to steal, how do you tell him to go back.
Unfortunately I don't have the answer, but I just wanted to add that I have played every version of The Show ever and have NEVER been able to just send one runner to steal despite following whatever the directions were. With guys on first and third I might try to steal second but every year I have countless guys thrown out at home.

And to whoever keeps maintaining that it's a bigger bug than those who claim it only happens when leading off or stealing, you could be right. But just know that myself and others are only experiencing this when doing those actions only, and 100% of the time it kills the auto base running. I have had zero problems otherwise.

I steal with runners on the corners the same as I did in MLB 15. The key is to use the L stick to select your runner before pressing anything else. So L towards the runner on 1b, and while holding it in that direction, press L2.

So both players are using identical profiles and you are inputting hitting for both teams with separate controllers?

As some people seem to have no issue and there are some here that do I'm just trying get an idea if there could be some input from settings or your hardware or anything like that. Do you mind just posting your settings to see if there is anything that is similar to the other people or even a possible hardware/controller issue? It could be the slightest input/ slightly stuck button that may be doing what some people are saying and cancelling out the auto base running.

What totally helped me out was watching the second video below (tutorial) along with the help from fellow OS user Beatles response to my baserunning difficulties in the Q&A thread.

I just use whatever default setting in the game. I'll give it a test run. Initially, I was actually trying to do what you suggested forever but nothing happens.

With the runner on 2nd, I would push left stick up and hit L2 (apparently you're not suppose to hold L2, just a simple tap L2 works to steal). But then pressing the controller icon buttons didn't work. The icon buttons wouldn't show up on screen in the on screen display (OSD). So I resorted to using R1 and L1, but then all runners would run simultaneously.

I tried it again, but there seems to be a delay before the icon would show up on the small little base path indicator when you push on the left stick.

You want a runner on 2nd to advance on a hit to the of like to tag up? If so, you would move the left stick up indicating 2nd base and then push the square button to advance him to 3rd. I don't know about any delay. It always works for me. If you are definitely doing it right, maybe there is something wrong with your analog stick or something? I really don't know. Let me know if I didn't explain it well enough. I am sure there are youtube vids that go step by step.

            My understanding is this
            :
There is actually two processes involved in stealing bases and running from one bag to the next, especially if you are caught in a run down.

            PART 1: Controls ==> left stick + tap L2

PART 1 is when the base runner is stationary at 1st, 2nd, and/or 3rd base at the very start.

            (A) Point the left stick to the desired baserunner and simply tap L2 once. Don't hold and release L2 (because this actually tells all your baserunners to steal). That's the most confusing part about the in game manual.

            Holding L2 VERSUS Tapping L2

The key is actually not holding onto L2 (& releasing L2). Don't do that because that actually moves all your baserunner simultaneously. The key is to point your left stick at the desired baserunner, and only tap L2 to "start the steal process". In other words, tapping L2 actually "preloads or charges" the desired baserunner to run immediately after the pitcher throws the pitch, but it doesn't help you run back and forth between bases.

That is only part 1. You're not done when it comes to running the bases, especially when you're in a run down situation like this:

            <iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/VCtIO2nqjIk" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" width="560"></iframe>

PART 2: Controls ==> left stick + icon buttons
PART 2 is when the baserunner is actively stealing the next base.

Once the base runner is stealing the next base, then your controls changes to using icons and the left stick only if you want to control a single individual base runner. I would probably suggest doing this frequently, because this will help your reflexes.

Once your baserunner is running, push the left stick towards the previous base the runner was on. If runner was on 1st running towards 2nd, push the left stick towards first and this selects him. Even if the runner is 75% of the way to 2nd base, you need to push the left stick towards 1st base to highlight this specific runner. Now the fun part begins, you no longer need to worry about the left stick. Now you simply worry about which icon (X, O, triangle, square) to press in order to signal the runner to move from 1st, to 2nd, to 3rd or to home. The same commands during hit and run, regular base running situations.

Other very important things to consider

            (1) Only use the L1 and R1 button if you want everyone to run around the bases simultaneously.
            (2) If you only want to control a single baserunner, do not use L1 or R1.
            (3) If you only want to control a single individual baserunner, use the left analog stick and the icon buttons (X, O, triangle, square)

So if you have a situation runner on 1st and 3rd and you want to only steal 2nd:
            (1) Point the left stick at first base.
            (2) Tap L2 only ( do NOT hold & release L2 )

What this does is: Your baserunner on 3rd will stay at 3rd, and your baserunner on 1st will steal 2nd.

I don't think "they" said they knew before the game came out. I think it's more of they know now, at least I hope that's true.

Anyway, I understand your anger and frustration, and you are not alone.

                    Re: Baserunning

It's not tied to controlling leads, or queueing steals. The autobaserunning is broken, regardless of whether you press any buttons pre pitch or not. At least five times a game the runners just won't run on hits, or run back to original base as opposed to running on two out batted ball contact. It just defaults to manual baserunning for no reason, and even if you see it in time you can't seem to get them to run anyways.

It is a massive bug. It is making the game unplayable for many, many people like me who have always used auto baserunning. It is being downplayed too much. This game shouldn't have been released like this, how could it have not been caught?

I don't want to sound like a jerk, but I'm frustrated, and everybody keeps saying it's only when you queue a steal etc when that's not true. Or they try to teach me how to use the manual controls. I don't want too. I didn't give this
Company another $70 dollars for the game to be broken in the way I want to play it.

I totally agree that this base running issue when set to auto is seriously bugged. I agree with the above comments. I tried another game and hit one into the gap. The runner stops at first. This hit was a double because I pressed the L1 button after seeing that the runner stopped. Fortunately, he made it to second. The odd thing is this runner scored on a single up the middle without me pushing anything. Same game, runner on first with a single. Batter hits one down the line to the wall. Runner on first dives back to first. I pressed the L1, runner gets up and runs to second. At the worst, there should be runners on second and third. However, the runners are at first and second. The next batter singles up the middle and wouldn't you know it, the runner from second scores without me pressing any buttons. In this scenario I just described, the runner either on first or going to first did not advance when he should have with base running set to auto.

There's definitely something wrong with this and I hope for a fairly quick fix. I'll learn on manual base running if I have to, but I've always played on auto. That's just my preference.

Why not start a new thread devoted to this issue, such as Auto Baserunning Issue. In that way, the thread would be specific to auto baserunning.

I don't doubt that random bugs happen with auto baserunning. The dive backs on base hits have happened to me too. I took manual control and ran myself into a triple play.

However, the manual leadoffs and steals should also be fixed, because it is pretty apparent that several people have performed those actions and unknowingly disabled auto baserunning. I assume it was not designed this way on purpose, because in all other cases where you override the CPU running, the baserunner window notifies you. Leading off and stealing should be fixed, because if a user really wanted to manually control them at that point, they can take control after the pitch outcome.

to stop the ******** CPU from stealing on it's own you gotta hold L2 the entire at bat that way YOU are controlling the runner, I have been getting caught stealing to many times because of this, and No I can't play with assist I suck at base running and it will be worse I like looking at my hits and not having to worry about running the bases and screwing it all up, I have seen the CPU make boneheaded plays by running from 2nd to home when clearly their no chance of making it home, I don't mind this though happens in real life

I have not had the runners stopping issue though just sick of the CPU always stealing and getting picked off so hard L2 down it stops it just don't accidentally let go of L2 lol
