Pick-offs
Has anybody picked a baserunner off yet? I know in last years version all it resulted in was you throwing the ball over the first basemen's head and out of play.Tags: None -

Re: Pick-offs
I've gotten a couple and been nabbed a couple times.
Seen some wild throws, but they don't always go out of play. Definitely better."Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment

Re: Pick-offs
I've yet to catch the runner when they slide back, but I've caught a few runners napping. Only had 1 throw away and it was on the fast pickoff. I think deceptive is the new conservative pickoff.Comment

Re: Pick-offs
ive gotten a few and have seen my guys get picked off as well.
but i love being able to throw out base runners now, like a lot of the DD games ive played people use Dee Gordon for that bunt and steal like they did a lot of in 15 but ive been able to throw out gordon trying to steal second several times now.Toronto Blue Jays

Re: Pick-offs
Does anyone feel like sometimes no matter what you do you're going to get picked off? Like against the CPU?
Seems like sometimes I'm all over the R1 button and the guys just sits there gets picked off. Anyone else feel like sometimes it's unstoppable?
And I'm referring to when you take an extra step; not the default lead.Comment

Re: Pick-offs
It can seem like that. Hitting the lead button when the pitcher has come set seems like it's at least a 50/50 chance of an instant (as in, as soon as you push the button) pick-off attempt.
I'm also thinking the Pick Off slider does...nothing. I have it at 0 and still see a lot of pickoffs, including multiple consecutive attempts.
Once I just stopped leading...and the pitcher STILL threw over. I'm like "OKAY I'm staying near the base! Sheez!""Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment

Re: Pick-offs
I am referring more to when you take the step immediately, before the set. When that pickoff animation happens, it just feels like the runner is stuck in concrete and won't get back regardless. Like some algorithm exits that uses Baserunning, Steal, and Pickoff Ratings to determine the likelihood of success.
I've had that happen, too. I wouldn't be surprised if there was some chance to be "caught flatfooted" and then the runner has extra delay on the input or such. Stealing ability and pickoff rating (and type) might be making something like that happen."Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment

Ha, well either way it's in my head! I can't take an extra step now and feel like I'm not gonna get picked off.Comment

Re: Pick-offs
I have a 90 SPD 91 BR player on my team, and his steal % is around 30%
Meanwhile I have a guy who's now 64 SPD 35 BR and his steal % is 100.
The lead does matter, but guys are going to be more careful with a speedster taking a lead, and that in turn is going to give the jump debuff from the throw over. Nothing is worse than a bad jump. I've sent speedsters back to the bag or tried to foul off due to bad jumps.Comment

I think it's a kind of "pick your moment" thing.

It's not like folks weren't "ready for" or "throwing over" to keep guys like Billy Hamilton from stealing. Or perhaps much any average base stealer (average = 70% success in MLB last year).
And then it leads to stuff like you mention - players that are bad at stealing steal better than players good at it. Yeah that makes sense."Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment
