Catchers fielding tappers?
Has anyone else had problems with trying to field those little tappers in front of the plate? Nearly every time, my catcher, no matter who it is, runs by the ball the first time I go to it, and then I have to go back towards the plate to pick it up and by then it is too late. Didn't know if it is just a weird problem that keeps happening to me or if this is a pretty common thing for people to experience. The only other thing I've noticed is that it seems to only happen when the ball is tapped off towards the first base line or pitching mound. My catcher doesn't have a problem picking it up when it is near the third-base line.Tags: None -

Re: Catchers fielding tappers?
Interesting. Maybe it is just me then. I had it again yesterday three times. Slow tappers in front of the plate towards the 1B side, and my catcher just ran right by the ball the first time I went over it, then I had to go back to it again. And they are with decent defensive catchers. Oh well. Guess I'll just have to live with it happening once every 2 or 3 games. I'll have to try and get a video of it next time.Comment

Same thing happened to me twice the other day, with Russell Martin who has great fielding attributes. Turned into a hit both times. He just ran right past the ball instead of fielding it. I had no idea why that happened since normally I field those no problem.Comment

Never happened to me either. You guys preload immediately?"When it's all set and done, reality is the best innovation."Comment

Re: Catchers fielding tappers?
My catcher just fielded a tapper with two out with the bases loaded and threw it 30 feet over the first basemen's head into right fieldComment

Re: Catchers fielding tappers?
I've tried both ways. Most times I forget to even preload at all no matter who the fielder is. Happens either way.
The only "fix" I've come across is to basically just stop your catcher short of the ball and then walk towards it and he should pick it up, but then you have to hurry the throw to first.Comment

So far, for me at least, this year's is the best so far in catchers fielding tappers. I haven't had any issues so far.Comment

Re: Catchers fielding tappers?
I always preload my throws with the catcher and most of the time it works fine. I think it's a weird issue with just not picking up the ball at certain angles or positions while running. I've had a similar issue with my OF not fielding a ball as it bounced off the wall down the 1B foul line. I was there and there just no attempt to bend down and field it.Comment

Re: Catchers fielding tappers?
I have had mixed results with my catchers, this year. I think it's user error, to a degree. I find when it's a faster runner who hits the tapper, I tend to rush, which makes the catcher over-run the ball. But slower runners, I take my time, and everything is like butter.Comment
