    Franchise question

I am just curious if when you play your franchise, do you keep it as close as possible to the current MLB roster or do you alter the roster?

I have been playing my M's roster pretty close to the actual team roster. I haven't even looked at the free agent pool. I guess it's kind of a stubborn thing, like 'I can win with these guys then so should they'.

    Cheers!

I'll start with what the team had on opening day and go from there. If someone gets hurt I wont do exactly what the team did in that situation. Ill call up whoever i want. Never sign anyone in the 1st year of FA though.

      Re: Franchise question

I always start with reality, and then consider it my own universe from that point on. I take about 3-4 months to finish a season in franchise, so I'm generally too far ahead to mimic reality accurately. I like doing it my way.

I used the default roster for a Rockies season I'm playing right now & I had to pickup Justin Morneau from the FA pool. I couldn't stomach the thought of playing a full year with Mark Reynolds & Ben Paulsen at firstbase. But even in other years I've looked to the FA pool, and made trades with other teams. Last year I had an Indians season with the 1987 rosters & had a chance to steal Doug Drabek in a deal the Pirates offered to me & I just had to jump on that.

The first thing I do is upgrade scouts and coaches. Then I look thru the free agent pool for young talent, usually there are two or three good players to be had. I then take 3 scrubs....low potential "D" type players with low overall and high salaries and then trade them for 1 scrub...a scrub will be the best you will get usually but that is ok, your looking to dump some salary and free up some roster slots and then go back to the free agent pool and fill your roster back up.

I then re-adjust my 40 man and dive into spring training.

            Re: Franchise question

I start with the team, and anyone they consider "long term pieces" I don't trade. Certain not in my first year, which I play in it's entirety. I do, however, end up upgrading the team best I can, with prospects that I don't consider building blocks. The Sox have 4 relatively "untouchable" prospects, and I still have all 4, plus a handful of others. I play an entire season, in a few months, and then sim 7-8 years and play another, so it's important for me not to just load up my 2016 team, and for all my moves to have consideration for what they do for the future.

              Re: Franchise question

My franchise is my own "universe" so I make roster moves based on what I feel is best to help me win a championship. With that said, I don't go make trades just to make trades and prefer to build my team through my farm system vs through free agency or trade.

I always start my dynasty with the default roster and then go from there. So my team, quite often, is different from reality from the get-go. And then I go my own way from there.

Yeah I use the roster that ships with the game. I create my own prospects/minor leaguers.

I like that idea. How many seasons do you normally go through.

Usually 2 or 3 in a year, but then I use the carryover save feature.

I just started a Rockies franchise and I might have to do something similar lol.

That and sign any arm with a pulse. My goodness those pitchers...my pitcher-loving self is dying right now lol.

I change mine a ton. Play with the Indians and keep their truly special stars if it works, guys like Lindor, Kluber, and Salazar. But I do horse trade around , and this season I created a couple guys for the Indians before launching the franchise.

I know that makes the game easier but it's more fun to personalize the team IMHO. tEHO though and I totally get why some players want to keep their rosters pretty stable vs real life.

My number one reason for doing a Rockies season is the pitching. If you can pitch well in Colorado, you can pitch anywhere.

                              Re: Franchise question

I do a bit of a mix. I usually start off with the OSFM roster. I'll sprinkle in a few of my own created prospects - some teams get a few, others may get one. From there I'll treat it as my own universe.

However, I do try to keep certain aspects close to real life like certain "untouchable" players usually remain with the team they are on unless they have a great deal of success and price themselves out of the market. Instances like that, I'll look to see what might be a reasonable offer from the hometown team vs what open-market would draw and factor how the contract would play in the budget. Like I doubt I would be able to keep Greinke, Pollock, and Goldschmidt on the DBacks roster when they all hit free agency without having to sacrifice some of the more valuable pieces to make it happen.

If a blockbuster trade happens in real life, I may see how it will impact my little universe. If the trade makes sense in my universe like it does in real life, I'll pull the trigger on it. However, if the buyer in the real-life trade is out of contention while the seller still is in the hunt, I'll hold off. It's pretty much something that happens on a case-by-case basis.
