Im not the biggest baseball fan anymore, didnt help being a cubby lover for the longest time. Still have anger moments remembering berkman. So with the resurgence of the cubs, Ive slowly gotten back into it. Because of that, I dont have a lot of loyalty for those on my team nor care who "belongs" somewhere else(building blocks of a franchise). I've always played every sports franchise the same way though. If you're 30, you're too old. Im not getting stuck on the hook for your contract when you inevitably decline. Sports are a young man's game, with exceptions few and far between(AKA the Jordan rule, best player in the league).
So I start a franchise with the best roster available from the company, so the show's live roster, or updated rosters on madden/nba2k. From there, I become a businessman. And if I can get comparable production from someone cheaper who's on the incline, thats what Im gonna do. I love Arrieta and Lester in real life, have enjoyed watching them pitch immensely(even lester). But this is a video game, and I know you might be great another 2 years and serviceable a couple more, but why do you need to do that on my team? Cause you started the season on my team? GTFOH, give me some young guns to develop.
I consider myself the bank of young talent in any sports sim. The rest of the league can have the older superstars and the young ones making ubermillions. Im gonna have a low budget so that when I want to sign someone to a long term contract, I feel comfortable financially. This is a business, man. And as the years progress, I will continue to trade off stars that are starting to age(28-30) for kids(18-22) that could play everyday if the opportunity came.
Hell, I just had 100 win season with a 5 man starting rotation of 23 year olds, won the world series, only ace was thor. every other pitcher was rotation for role and 86 or less. An 18 year old was the post season mvp on this 1st season cubs franchise. Created dude who was on the rockies named john greer, was a ss, moved him to 2B. became an 83 overall by the end of the postseason at 18...
