my lastest frustration (with auto field as I gave up on manual after too many OF errors) is how pitchers are so slow to cover 1st base. Not even on just 3-6-1 double plays, but on standard hits to the right side. I had Salty make a great diving stop (Miggy is on the 15 day DL) and my pitcher doesn't get over in time. Now why isn't' he running over? And it happens A LOT

A swing that's just a bit too low could create foul backs even with on or just early/late timing.
In any case, it's probably less about the actual slider position (nothing magic about "0" or anything else), but more about how the timing slider interacts with your own timing skill.
I get some foul backs but I'm above default in timing and tend to be early on everything in this year's game, even triple-digit heat. 0 probably would just give me misses galore.

If you've lowered Fielder Speed - that will play into this. Unfortunately, it might be the best way to challenge fielder range...but this is a side effect.
It also doesn't help that a lot of pitchers seem, at least in my franchises, to get totally garbage speed ratings. My carryover is mostly 0 speed pitchers. I might have to start putting pitcher speed at 50 or so and see if that helps - at least for starters.Last edited by KBLover; 09-19-2016, 07:01 PM."Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment

Re: This game needs a complete fielding overhaul.
anyone having a major issue with base runners lately? its like way worse for me today than ever before. What i mean here is, you hit a base hit no matter what kind of hit it is, the base runners will stand still in between the bases they are to and from. forcing the opponent to easily throw said base runner out at base they are suppose to goto. for example this literally just happened to me, has Nelson Cruz on first base, he takes a lead off like every player does. next up was Seth Smith, he hits a base hit right up the middle, Smith runs to first, while Cruz just sits there in the lead off position like a ****** then the center fielder throws the ball back to 2nd base and boom cruz is easily out because he was like stunned and standing there like a ******.Toronto Blue Jays

Yeah, that might be as much PCI location (and RNG) as timing.

Re: This game needs a complete fielding overhaul.
Keep his Baserunning Aggressivenes and Stealing Ability low.
Both of those impact how often the CPU will run with the player (if you use auto baserunning) and how successful he'll steal (if you or CPU send him).
Also, with 50 speed, he'll probably not get green lighted very often, even if he had a non-zero stealing ability. Seems around 60 or so is the cut off for the CPU getting a little more bold (long leads) and about 50 steal ability for them to go once in a while."Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment

I would tend to agree with the OP on fielding in this series, but how about a COMPLETE COMMENTARY OVERHAUL?? It's beyond dreadful anymore...we need a whole new commentary team. Just play the NBA2K series to see how commentary SHOULD be done in sports gamesPSN ID: artvandelegheComment

Re: This game needs a complete fielding overhaul.
Haven't played since PS3 days. Which isn't that long ago actually. But I always thought a fielding revamp was badly needed. It wasn't bad, but every player seemed the same. Arm strength included. Kinda dull overall. Seems the same? Maybe this could be the next big thing they push. Because I still believe this has been the sports game for a while. Again I haven't played in a couple years, but it still seems it would get most votes for best. Or up there anyway.Comment

Re: This game needs a complete fielding overhaul.
Fielding is definitely improved in this year's game, but there are still a good amount of issues.
A huge issue is that if there are runners on the corners and they do a double steal and you fake the throw to 2nd, your catcher goes into a relaxed animation as if it's a deadball and ignores the runner coming home and won't tag them despite standing on home plate.
I have also noticed outfielders still have too many times where they don't hustle enough to either get to the ball or release it when there is a chance to nail a runner. I'm not talking about at first base either. I know they have that set up the way it is for a reason. I'm talking about all of the other bases. Just a couple of nights ago the CPU had a runner on first and hit a line drive that way that forced the runner to come to a complete stop. My RF ran to field the ball on a hop and then threw the ball into 2nd as if it was a fly out and no one was on base. Had he not taken 3 gather steps and rainbowed the ball in then I would've gotten the runner out at 2nd with the force. Instead it was still a bang bang play that the runner barely beat out. This happens too frequently with all bases.
I have also noticed that pitchers still act too nonchalant with most balls hit in front of the mound resulting in infield hits that should never occur.
A few smaller issues I've noticed are that I have to manually take control of my 1B at times with auto fielding because on grounders hit to them they won't take the 3 steps to the bag, but will instead rocket it to the pitchers mound and then the pitcher will try and sprint to the bag to get the forceout. It's not at all a situation that the pitcher would be covering in.
For visual issues, the same few waiting under flyball or popup animations look bad. Players don't look natural and real awaiting a ball to come down. It's too robotic and dated looking. We could use a number of new animations for routine outs that add authenticity to the game and actually look like real life. It also bugs me to see infielders completely turn their backs to the ball and sprint into place to catch a popup. Infielders do not ever take their eye off of the ball. They would backpedal or run looking back and up at the ball while usually keeping their free hand out for balance.
I really like the urgency players have on most plays. The fielding has taken great strides forward since I created this thread, but there are still many issues to tackle. I hope that SCEA really continues to throw resources into fielding changes and doesn't put it down on the list after the improvements this year. We're going to year 4 or 5 on this gen, right? It's time the fielding animations reflect that. Too many of them look like last gen animations which lack the motion of an actual baseball player. It looks like they tossed a ball up to the guy in mocap and told him to be as still and stiff as he could. The players don't look like someone actually trying to catch a baseball. They're catching a soft toss or something dropped from above them.“No one is more hated than he who speaks the truth.”

Re: This game needs a complete fielding overhaul.
there is still a lot of issues with fielding, and baserunning.
baserunning still has that occasional issue(it is way worse in '16) where the base runners simply stop and not move unless you manually move them. for instance. in 1 game i had i hit a flyball out to left field, with a runner on first. the left fielder caught the ball and threw it back in then the cut off man threw the ball to first base for a double play. the problem was the base runner stood in the leaf off first base spot and didnt move(and yes i wasnt really paying attention that much at the time and show have moved the runner back to first manually, but this should not happen on AUTO anyways)
now for the fielding. the biggest issue i am having with it, is the occasional stop before throwing plays. like when you hit a ball to the shortstop, he gets the ball then stands there idle for a second or 2 then lobs the ball to first base ending up with a single because the shortstop stood idle before throwing it.Toronto Blue Jays

Re: This game needs a complete fielding overhaul.
Yea, there seems to be an issue with animations branching together at times. I've noticed it fairly often with catchers on balls they block or let get by them. They stand up, take a second to move, then pick the ball up, stand still for another fraction of a second, then throw the ball. It isn't fluid like real life and causes baserunners to get first or advance to other bases in situations they normally wouldn't.
I know we'll need to provide videos of what we're talking about so I'll start making highlights out of my games. I broadcast every game I play for my buddy, so I have plenty archived.“No one is more hated than he who speaks the truth.”

Re: This game needs a complete fielding overhaul.
in re to the OP topic:
Yes, yes it does. Among all the little quirks as mentioned.. .
Let me dive when I want and let me switch to OF player when I want after diving with my IF. I can't believe how many balls have gone by my OFs after I've been going for a ball as an IF and it drags my OF the opposite direction and I have to cut back to go after the ball. Insta rage quit type of situations here.
The throws from some of the best OFs in the game with the best stats are often WAY off. Can't even.. .Comment

Re: This game needs a complete fielding overhaul.
I played every game in my franchise and I am about 30 games into season 2. Diving for balls with my infielders is totally frustrating. I don't expect to make the catch every time I dive but soooooo many times the ball goes right under the arm of the diving player. For example you dive and the ball goes under the players elbow or under the wrist. I thought maybe I was diving for balls I shouldn't have so I quit diving as much. Then the balls were just out of my fielders grasp. It's like the keep their arms totally extended on every dive when at times they need to bend their arms to adjust to the ball. Does that make sense? Not sure if I am explaining it very good.Comment

Re: This game needs a complete fielding overhaul.
Yes if anything The Show needs is a complete overhaul to fielding. And my biggest gripe is about player ratings. I'm a hundred games in and still not so sure they mean a whole lot. Just when I think they do matter, I see stuff that says otherwise. Just the fact I'm not sure, one way or the other, says it all. Not a big enough difference, that's for sure. At least imo of course
