    Re: Manage only mode

Oh my sweet lord I love this game! I'm off work mostly (and on crutches) with an injury, so I've pretty much been going hard since getting this. The Braves have been my favorite team since watching Hank Aaron as a little kid with my grandpa, so naturally I picked them.

I simmed most of the first season with only a couple of low key roster moves (Khris Davis and Billy Hamilton basically exchanged for Matt Kemp and Markakis) and now I'm actually playing through season two and doing surprisingly well, having picked up the aging vets Matt Werth and Jose Bautista for depth during the free agent period. I'm only 2 1/2 games back of first place in my division as we near the all-star break.

I've never enjoyed a sports game more than this.

How is it if I sim games (testing franchise, or something to that effect), Kluber is a Cy Young pitcher. However, in my MoM franchise (playing every game) he pitches like a AAA #4 pitcher if Im lucky. Giving up (alot) homers, walking the bases loaded, high walk rates, 5.71 era through May 28th, 25 to 38 pitch innings. My pitching sliders are 4/5/5. He is the worst pitcher on my staff currently. All my other pitchers are pitching fine, some are actually better then they should be.

I was feeling like this a bit after awhile, but (at least in my case) you really need to give it a full season to see the stats bear out. I signed a big time pitcher, and for the first month he was near garbage, while my 5th pitcher was smoking everybody. Same with a couple of guys in the field. By the end of the season they were about where they should be for stats

          Re: Manage only mode

With the game less than two weeks away (at least for those who pre-ordered it), thought I would resurrect this thread for those of us weirdos who enjoy "Mange Only Mode" game play. It is still my preferred mode of play, sure we don't control the players, but we do make many decisions throughout each game that does influence the final result.

But I am also wondering if others find that it is too easy to win games in the MoM mode. Not talking about individual games. Sure I do lose games here and there. But it seems that I win on average two out of every three games throughout a 162 game season which results in 100 to 110 wins each season and could this be because over the years I discovered ways to work the counts when I am at bat and/or discovered ways to pitch to contact to induce double plays and or induce strike outs (not every time of course but there are ways to influence these frequencies) and perhaps one of the biggest problems with the mode is that we play CPU opponents who do not adapt to our tendencies.

            Ready for the game!

I battle to just hover around .500 but I use middle of the road teams (TB,BAL,KC etc)
Also I let the catcher's call the pitches so that could have something to do with your success
I will shift the Defense, call bunts, steals, take pitch, pretty much everything else except what you mentioned

I let the catchers call my games also. I do handle everything else though. Call for bunts, steals, subs, and all that. I feel it's more real to me to let the pitchers and catchers do what they do. I usually use the Indians, and I can tell the difference if Gomes is catching or Perez. As for records, I expect the Indians to have around 100 wins + or -. I did do a Braves MoM and finished with a 74 win season. I also had a Indians franchise that finished with 86 wins. I'm sure a lot depends on sliders and individual gameplay styles.

                Perhaps I should try this.

I am a Rockies fan, so I play with the team in this game and while I am sure the Indians are the better team, the Rockies had a good team last season losing to Arizona in a crazy wildcard game. But what's funny in the MLB The Show 17 season I have going on right now using the roster released by SDS at the end of the real world 2017 season, it's not my offense that is responsible for my current 27-11 record (BTW the Indians are 26-11, so I am not the only team doing well). In fact I am in the bottom 3rd on offense in the NL. It's been my pitching, especially my starters, plus my above average team defense that is responsible for my good start. Perhaps part of why my pitchers are doing so well could be attributed to me trying to induce ground balls and strike outs.

In my next game (likely tomorrow night), I'll just let the catchers call the game and see how that goes.

This is my favorite mode. It's how I fell in love with The Show.

I know it's only a few of us who enjoy it, so I'm hoping it's still in this year. It's franchise mode week, so I'm excited, and will be looking for that come Thursday.

                    I like this idea.

I usually will tell a picher and catcher how I want them to approach a hitter by either:

                    a) selecting pitch to batter
                    b) pitching around
                    c) pitching aggressively

and have stopped picking pitch locations.

                      Re: Manage only mode

I did play a game last night, Rockies home to the Dodgers where the plan was to stop calling pitch locations and let the catchers call the game instead and I held to this as not once in the game did I call a pitch location though there was a time when my pitcher went down 3-0 in the count followed by myself calling for him to pitch aggressively for the next two pitches. Then another time late in the game I instructed the pitcher to pitch around one batter. Other than that it was a hands off approach in terms of my pitchers and catchers.

Anyway the Dodgers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the top of the 2nd, but the Rockies tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the 2nd. Then my offense came alive in the bottom of the 3rd taking a 6-2 lead and this offense was welcome since it was generated by several players who had recently been struggling at the plate. I completed the game winning it 7-3 taking 3 of 4 in the 4 game homestead and increasing my lead in the division to now 8 games over the 2nd place Dodgers with a 28-11 record. So I am going to have to wait to see what sort of impact not calling pitch locations has as this was not a good game to compare it to thanks to the offensive production which has been absent most of April and May but occasionally surfaces every 3rd or 4th game.

                        Re: Manage only mode

Bad news. I won't be playing Mom games in MLB 18.

Don't worry MoM is still available in MLB 18 in Franchise mode, they didn't remove it. What they did remove was Season mode and I was planning on bringing a MLB 17 Season mode file into MLB 18. But thanks to SDS's deception and lack of transparency I cannot do this. I am 44 games into a Season mode file I started back in January of this year and there are some really cool battles between teams like the Astros, Indians, Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, Nationals, Cubs, Dodgers and Rockies going on around the league that I want to see how it all sorts itself out. When I started this Season back January I told myself if it takes 2 years to complete it, it will take 2 years. But I am going to see this Season through to it's completion. Oh and all the games I am not playing in as a MoM gamer are CPU vs CPU Fast Play Non-QC games so the stats across the league are apples to apples comparison. So I am still going to be playing MoM games. Just not with MLB 18.

In the mean time I have discovered RTTS games can be fun as long as I can play the complete games or something close to the complete games. I have no interest playing RTTS games if all I ever do is bat 4 times a game and maybe field 4-5 plays and the entire game takes less than 10 minutes to play. But I had fun this evening playing short stop in a RTTS rookie prospects game where I was in the field for every defensive pitch and/or in the dugout or at the plate or on the bases for every offensive pitch of the game.
