Are there any workarounds to this that I am just unaware of?
Curious why you hate doing this if that's the way it works in reality? I have no issue exercising options on the guys who don't make the team.

I personally play spring training. I have position battles (especially if I am a rebuilding team) and it allows me to get my sliders right before I start the actual season.

I always play my Spring training games. Im probably in the minority but I wish the devs would spend more time on improving ST'ing in franchise mode. For instance add in some more ballparks to play in for Spring games, and add player invites so you have more than the 40 man roster, and improve the AI logic for teams during the spring training games.

Fair point. Let my preface (my previous post) by saying I've never completed a full season. But I plan to thi syear, and continue with the brilliant Y2Y save feature.

I guess I don't want to 'waste' an option because I am fearful of 'using them up' in a season. However, on 2nd thought, I guess there's not going to be 'that much' movement anyway.

If I recall correctly, each player gets 3 moves? I assume those 'reset' each year?

            Sorry for the n00b questions...

I don't mind the noob question I love explaining this stuff. Every player has 3 option years but once an option is used it's valid for the entire season. So you don't use up 3 options in a season just one per season. So if u send a guy down at the end of spring training you can then bring him up and send him back down an unlimited amount of times for that season. Maybe you thought you use an option every time you send a guy down and that the spring training one was a waste of an option? That's not the way it works. Hope this helps. Let me know if u have any other questions.

Ah. You are precisely correct with me being incorrect on how I thought it worked.

This is great news, lol. Given that I can use all 40 in ST will make me play many, many more ST games. I never really saw the point of bothering with it, playing with my everyday players that I was going to use anyway (other than slider tuning).

Thanks so much for clearing that up!

I play as many as I need to get a feel for my squad. Play every game at a minor league, or classic stadium. Mix my lineup up every game. It's more of a free for all, but I get through most of the month. I make cuts as I see fit. Good times...

I'm really curious as to how you did in spring W-L wise, and then how that simmed season turned out.

Thanks for the replies, everyone, really informative and interesting.

I've given it some thought, and I think I may do the spring training from now on. At the very least, even if I know who I want for position players at MLB level, it can shake out how the bullpen/minor league rotations look.

Also do hot and cold streaks carry over from ST, or do they vanish along with the stats?

Pretty sure hot/cold streaks do not transfer over to regular season. I know that pitcher fatigue does not at least.

Its been back long enough ago (Bobby Cox's last year) I dont remember my exact ST record but I do seem to recall winning more than I lost, though I think I overplayed my starters longer than you normally see in ST. As for the regular season I remember the Phillies running away with the divison and the Cardinals barely edged me out for the lone existing wild card.
The extra wild card team was still a couple years away IIRC

I also remember at the time my intent in the regular season was to play all games Derek Lowe started and then sim anything else. But by the time ST ended I wound up simming everything after that. I dont even recall what prompted that.

Apologies if this is slightly off topic, but I'm still learning offseason/ST roster management and one thing is currently confusing me - teams (in real life ST games) seem to be able to play anyone regardless of whether they were Non Roster Invitees to Major League camp. This thread helped me to understand the whole NRI aspect, and the fact that it isn't implemented in The Show which is why I can't play, for example, an AA player not on my 40 man roster in an ST game.

However, I was looking at some box scores from yesterday's real life ST games, and noticed that (to use one specific example) Detroit played a guy called Quincy Latimore (caught my attention as I am from Australia and have seen him play in our summer league). Latimore is on a Minor League contract though, and isn't on the list of NRI's on the Detroit MLB site. Can anyone explain how he (and there were a bunch of others in similar situation) was able to play in an ST game for the Tigers without being either on the 40 man roster or being an NRI?
