re: MLB The Show 17 Impressions

I checked out the Trop and was amazed by how good the indoor lighting and artificial grass textures are there.

I've always thought night lighting and indoor lighting looked poor in The Show, but all that looks amazing this year. I'm especially impressed by the shadows you get from the lights hitting hats/helmets in the indoor environment.

Also lighting and colors in general look much improved, and I thought they were good last year.

Man I love the fielding this year. So many beautiful animations allowing some slick looking plays to be made.

Had a play where ball hit towards Peralta at 3rd, he dives and knocks the ball down and it rolls a few feet away, he scurries to his feet, picks the ball up bare handed and throws a dart to first for the out.

Wish I had thought to save it.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

I've seen the chalk lines at home degrading after a play at the plate... don't have visual evidence atm. Honestly how much should the degrade though? I don't see crazy degrading IRL besides at home. Not many slide into first base or back into third...

re: MLB The Show 17 Impressions

Finally played my first game last night -- Pirates/D'backs at Chase Field. Due to using Dynamic Difficulty, I dominated with Ivan Nova to the tune of 13 Ks and only one hit in 7 IP, and plated 7 runs on 15 hits thanks to a steady diet of rookie-level pitches early on.

First homer was a slicing liner to the LF corner by Josh Bell. Very cool flight path, but a seemed bit "juiced" and after a few more screaming liners (noticed many hit speeds over 110+) I dropped user power and solid hits to 4. I also went oppo-taco with Cutch after those changes, but it was more of a driven ball as I was looking for something hard/away and got it. I pulled one to RF with Polanco when I guessed high heat (no feedback) and power swung. I didn't catch the distance; it wasn't anything crazy, landing maybe few rows back. But it was cool as it was a high arching flight, and really all three HRs were different types; love it. I even had a hard hit grounder down the 1B line go all the way to the corner for a stand-up double!

I think I was up to Veteran+ hitting by the end of the game since I maxed the DD slider, so my next couple of games should be better balanced as I move up to All-Star. Despite my dominance on the hill, I didn't progress to Veteran pitching until the 8th or 9th inning. I usually hit on AS and pitch on HOF, so I'm very interested to see where dynamic difficulty settles.

I had lost some interest in the series because too often the ball just didn't feel/look right off the bat, but after one game, it's clear that will not be a problem now. The baseball does what a baseball should now -- it's just a matter of tuning some sliders to tone down the power -- and it's a joy. If you stay back on a pitch away, you drive it or soft-serve the other way, depending on your timing. This affects fielding greatly as well since the ball is so much more alive. Like so many have said, so many more possible outcomes with much more risk/reward which means we have to play much smarter. I completely botched a dropping liner down the RF line, missing the ball and forcing me to run back to the corner to retrieve it. We'll chalk that up to Cutch not being used to RF yet.

Overall, the game feels very fresh. The visual upgrades are obvious (even w/o Pro and HDR), it's smoother when the ball is in play, and hitting is so much more fun & rewarding, and I'm sure pitching will be too once the CPU starts making contact. Can't wait to play more, so I plan on carrying over my franchise and RTTS to keep me occupied until OSFM17 is ready.

not sure if this has been brought up, but the time between navigating menus takes anywhere from 45 seconds to minutes, I assume that's not normal. Is this sever related and is anyone experiencing the same? I especially noticed this during a dynasty draft, where it took at least a minute between each draft pick

Definitely server related. You'll notice in the off-peak hours, everything moves a lot faster. Within a week or so, I'd expect this to improve significantly.

The immersion factor in RTTS is severely lacking.

I made the Futures game - how did I find out? An email from the team? Or from my agent? Or a meeting with the manager? Nope, when I hit play next appearance, it jumped to that game. Lame

I made the Eastern League All Star game! Same deal, nothing from the game.

I'm leading the league in homers and rbi's. Absolutely no commentary in game.

As I said, the immersion factor is sorely lacking

Disclaimer, I am a franchise guy, play offline and in Broadcast mode....wanting to recreate the feel of a regular season and regular TV broadcast as much as possible. I realize thats a dying breed as most play online and skip cut scenes.

With that said, to me The Show is starting to feel very dry. Gameplay this year is awesome. The new animations, the improved graphics and models are a huge improvement. But in terms of highlighting big moments, highlighting the players and making them seem like more than drones, and in terms of improving and updating the broadcast feel, its feeling quite outdated.

I feel like the guys miss huge opportunities to bring more personality and excitement to The Show. Whats weird, is that its one of the features heavily advertised this year, yet I still dont see player specific animations when I get a big hit, score a run, crush a bomb. I dont see players highlighted or any personality. I know that these animations exist...you can see them when you do your own replay. So why they arent actually shown in the game is such a big loss.

I want to focus on a few broadcast, personality, player and situation specific things that could bring the improved gameplay and improved player models and graphics into a near perfect game.

Starting with the Homerun Sequence which desperately needs an update and needs to focus on the player and team more. Then moving into the Homerun Replay, which again needs to focus on the player MUCH more. As its is now, most of the replay is of the ball.

                        1. I am amazed by the differences in pitcher effectiveness. I may be alone in this observation but I feel like average to poor middle relievers finally REALLY play that way. I've played only 3 full games and in all 3 I was undone by underwhelming bullpens. My first game (play now) was Teheran v the Brewers #1 (forget his name). I was down 2-1 after 6 and forced to PH for Teheran in the bottom of the 6th. Time to try the pen for my beloved Bravos. I call in Cabrera to start the 7th and he promptly walked the 1st 2 hitters. Sure he was hitting 96 on the gun but he couldn't throw a strike, even when I simply tapped X (classic pitching the only way to go) and tried to throw it down the middle. He gave up 2 more runs and it didn't get better with the next 2 pitchers. I lost 6-2. Rinse and repeat that experience with the Pirates and then the Braves again. I loved the frustration of using these average relievers.

                        2. I like Matty V. I like him a lot. Not just in real life but in the game. He's one of the most distinguished voices in baseball. I'm always surprised by sentiments to the contrary.

                        3. Ive never really liked Harold Reynolds on the MLB Network, but for some reason, I love him in the game.

                        4. Someone mentioned that pitches look a little "floaty". When I'm on the mound i feel the same way. Don't feel that way when batting.

                        5. Maybe I haven't found the right view yet but when I'm hitting, i sometimes think I hit a ground ball to 3rd but it's a line drive to left. It's hard to explain. I don't see the ball flight, or the ball, for that matter.

                        6. I know it's early but this is the best iteration in the series I've ever played

I haven't seen anyone here who dislikes Matt as a commentator in real life. In fact, he seems almost universally loved on here. Which is part of why so many people are disappointed with his commentary in game. He's relatively lifeless, in game. Which is completely contradictory to how he is in real life. He exudes excitement and a love for the game in real life. He makes routine fly balls sound like homeruns off the bat. I understand this is hard to capture when reading off a script, but the complaints are at least somewhat valid. For the commentary itself, aside from some new lines that mention Reynolds and Plesac by name, it is largely the same as it has been for over five years. It's stale. Repetitious. A lot of people, myself included, turn the commentary off after a month or two of playing. You're entitled to your opinion on his in game commentary, but I'd say that the comments to the contrary are largely validated. Again, I don't think anyone here dislikes Matt as a commentator in real life.

Has anyone else noticed you can add more letters to first and last names? Red Schoendienst's entire name now fits, but for some reason his retired number isn't recognized.
