I'm toying with the idea of editing all non-starting pitchers to be RPs with no closers. Then draft. Then re-edit the best RP on each team to closer. Or maybe never edit them back again and just see what happens.

Well I did that, and I never edited them back to closer status. The best one got put into closer and the morale was affected just like it would be otherwise. It also loaded the good teams since the first overall pick had the first pick of the relief pitchers.

My issue is this. I don’t like the relief rush. Having it happen in one round seems kinda dumb. But, I also don’t think that Jansen, no matter how a team would draft, would ever take him like 4th overall or whatever. But a team will definitely take him way before the ninth round, and I’m leaning toward letting the cpu be dumb on those guys to prevent the top loading of teams thanks to bad draft logic and it seems closer to what would actually happen with Jansen being taken probably third round. Plus, a good closer will win the close games, which there will likely be a lot of if a team takes a closer first.

My issue is not so much where the cpu drafts which RP, or if they all come off the board the same round or two (think how Madden does it with kickers, lol)--I just don't want them forgoing what they think is best player available (based on OVR probably) just because another guy has "CP" as his position. In other words, would they take 60 OVR Brad Ziegler instead of 92 OVR Andrew Miller just because one is technically a closer at the moment and one isn't? That I do not like. If the cpu wants to take Kenley Jansen at #1 overall, at least he's a guy that they can build around for many years.

There are enough decent relievers that, as the human participant, you can piece something together at closer even if if the cpu drafts funky and takes 60 RPs in a row or whatever while you're not paying attention.

Yeah, that’s mostly what I was trying to articulate, just doing a bad job. I’m actually thinking that maybe the top 15 or so guys with real longevity and a realistic chance to stick at closer (probably no Uehara, since he wouldn’t be a build piece) should be closers, that way, like you said teams will build around them. With the other guys, they wouldn’t be built around so they would stick around until the later rounds.

I did a test with every reliever over 80 being made a closer, just to see what would happen. Just like normal, the closers went amongst the other players. But then in round 9 it was weird. About the first 7 picks were relievers, and then after that none. It was regular stuff. The relievers got mixed in with the next few rounds just like regular players. And the rest of the closers that didn’t get picked were around for a long time. I got tired of waiting and simmed, and they all got sent to the minors since each team already had a closer. not sure if it helps, but I thought it was at least interesting.

AL and NL team. Would like to select a team i dont normallg play with. Have a normal 30 team chise going where i control TB/NYY, Det/MN, Oak/LAA, SD/AZ, ChC/CN, ATL/NYM. So those teams are out of contention. So what two teams should i play with?

Like clockwork. Right around this time every year Madden and the impending release of 2K kill this forum dead. No posts in the past 3 weeks in here, lol. I remember when I was a seasonal gamer...*sigh* Life was so simple back then.

Anyhow, I finally got my roster, sliders, settings, and SOTS installed, picked my team, and fantasy drafted. Allow me to display the results (I am the Detroit Tigers and had the #2 overall pick in the snake-style draft).

You might notice that some people on my depth chart weren't actually acquired through the draft. I made a handful of pretty even, I think, trades after the draft to get some guys that I wanted but missed out on.

Post-Draft Trades:

4. Traded SP Mitchell White + RP Tony Barnette + 2B Alex Blandino to Atlanta for SP Tanner Scott + RP Zack Burdi + UTIL Kike Hernandez.

I also made sure I had a good set of house rules for the draft so I didn't get a huge advantage over the computer. These allowed me to get a team I was happy with without rubbing it in the computer's face.

House Rules:

1. No restarting! Draft position is luck of the draw. No "seeing where certain guys get drafted" and then adjusting my draft board.

2. Salary floor of $100M. No drafting all pre-arb guys who make no money. Although I learned the game wipes out the contracts anyway when fantasy drafting. lol

3. Minimum amount of multi-year contracts = 5. No loading up with all "expiring contracts" to bully other teams right away in free agency.

4. Max 1 A prospect. Allowed myself one player with 90 POT or higher that has no service time.

5. Max 7 B prospects. Self-explanatory.

6. Minimum 30+ year olds = 10. I needed some graybeards on the team. Have to expose myself to some regression.

Misc Rantings:

Starting pitching is a little thin after pulling the trigger on basically a two-fer in sending C-Mart and Gerrit Cole away for Chris Archer. Just really wanted to play with Archer, lol. I have a feeling this staff will go as Alex Reyes goes. If he can stay healthy, that is. The back end (Lamet and Hammel) will be touch and go. Also what's the deal with me picking Hamels, Hammel, and Lamet? Some sort of syllabic Jedi mind tricks?

I have enough velocity for my liking in the bullpen. I am a huge fan of velocity. Burdi and Mauricio Cabrera (AAA, not shown) both throw 100+. Felipe Rivero and Archie Bradley can essentially be co-closers depending on the handedness of the 9th inning matchups. Both throw high 90s. Ryne Stanek might be the only long man in the league sitting at 98 mph. Hader gives me a funky 2nd lefty than I can possibly stretch back into a SP. Maurer and Strickland give me mid-90s heat and some late inning experience in the middle innings.

With the outfield, the approach was to draft a bunch of CF's who could conceivably be even better in the corners to give me a really strong defensive OF to patrol spacious Comerica Park with. Putting Trout in LF gets him his much deserved 99 OVR. Zimmer has the speed and arm to play anywhere. Buxton is the captain out there. Ageless Ichiro is biding his time in case anyone gets hurt.

The infield is a collection of guys who are average to good defensively, with lefty bats manning the corners. Carpenter is most likely to bat leadoff. Lamb will handle the cleanup duties. Phillips and Baez give me a flashy, playmaking middle of the diamond. Zunino completes the "strong up the middle" axiom. If this team struggles, it probably won't be for lack of defense.

Some decent prospects in the wings. Not a whole lot pitching-wise, but Francisco Mejia, Dominic Smith, Jake Burger, and Willie Calhoun give the organization some nice pieces to replace aging regulars or to make trades with (i.e. the Willy Adames-Alex Reyes trade that was super necessary after losing both C-Mart and Cole).

Overall, this team figures to strike out a ton and strike out a ton of opposing batters. With Lamb, Baez, Zunino, Buxton, Zimmer, and even Mike Trout to a degree, Detroit Tigers fans are not going to need much A/C this summer--the breeze will be steady blowin'. At the same time, it's not just possible, but, nay, likely that 6 or even 7 Tigers get to 20+ homers (Bell, Trout, Zimmer, Lamb, Baez, Carpenter, Zunino). This team should be a delight for fans who love defense and homers. Also a lot of positional versatility here.

You might notice that some people on my depth chart weren't actually acquired through the draft. I made a handful of pretty even, I think, trades after the draft to get some guys that I wanted but missed out on.

I also made sure I had a good set of house rules for the draft so I didn't get a huge advantage over the computer. These allowed me to get a team I was happy with without rubbing it in the computer's face.

2. Salary floor of $100M. No drafting all pre-arb guys who make no money. Although I learned the game wipes out the contracts anyway when fantasy drafting. lol

3. Minimum amount of multi-year contracts = 5. No loading up with all "expiring contracts" to bully other teams right away in free agency.

4. Max 1 A prospect. Allowed myself one player with 90 POT or higher that has no service time.

5. Max 7 B prospects. Self-explanatory.

6. Minimum 30+ year olds = 10. I needed some graybeards on the team. Have to expose myself to some regression.

Misc Rantings:

Starting pitching is a little thin after pulling the trigger on basically a two-fer in sending C-Mart and Gerrit Cole away for Chris Archer. Just really wanted to play with Archer, lol. I have a feeling this staff will go as Alex Reyes goes. If he can stay healthy, that is. The back end (Lamet and Hammel) will be touch and go. Also what's the deal with me picking Hamels, Hammel, and Lamet? Some sort of syllabic Jedi mind tricks?

I have enough velocity for my liking in the bullpen. I am a huge fan of velocity. Burdi and Mauricio Cabrera (AAA, not shown) both throw 100+. Felipe Rivero and Archie Bradley can essentially be co-closers depending on the handedness of the 9th inning matchups. Both throw high 90s. Ryne Stanek might be the only long man in the league sitting at 98 mph. Hader gives me a funky 2nd lefty than I can possibly stretch back into a SP. Maurer and Strickland give me mid-90s heat and some late inning experience in the middle innings.

With the outfield, the approach was to draft a bunch of CF's who could conceivably be even better in the corners to give me a really strong defensive OF to patrol spacious Comerica Park with. Putting Trout in LF gets him his much deserved 99 OVR. Zimmer has the speed and arm to play anywhere. Buxton is the captain out there. Ageless Ichiro is biding his time in case anyone gets hurt.

The infield is a collection of guys who are average to good defensively, with lefty bats manning the corners. Carpenter is most likely to bat leadoff. Lamb will handle the cleanup duties. Phillips and Baez give me a flashy, playmaking middle of the diamond. Zunino completes the "strong up the middle" axiom. If this team struggles, it probably won't be for lack of defense.

Some decent prospects in the wings. Not a whole lot pitching-wise, but Francisco Mejia, Dominic Smith, Jake Burger, and Willie Calhoun give the organization some nice pieces to replace aging regulars or to make trades with (i.e. the Willy Adames-Alex Reyes trade that was super necessary after losing both C-Mart and Cole).

Overall, this team figures to strike out a ton and strike out a ton of opposing batters. With Lamb, Baez, Zunino, Buxton, Zimmer, and even Mike Trout to a degree, Detroit Tigers fans are not going to need much A/C this summer--the breeze will be steady blowin'. At the same time, it's not just possible, but, nay, likely that 6 or even 7 Tigers get to 20+ homers (Bell, Trout, Zimmer, Lamb, Baez, Carpenter, Zunino). This team should be a delight for fans who love defense and homers. Also a lot of positional versatility here.

I like those house rules, I think I might use now that I’ve got my sliders down and what not. I will post my draft results.

So I started a fantasy franchise w the Yankees, and simulated the first season and didn't make the playoffs.

2018 season which I'm currently on i decided i would try my hardest to play every game. Currently 63 games into the season and I'm 51-12. Which is the most games by far I've ever played in a single season. I play the games fully except for that I have quick counts on. I know that record is a little unrealistic but my division is putrid so i rarely play teams above .500. Last month i played 2 teams over .500 and lost both series. Anyway, the real life Dodgers made me feel a little a bit better about it with how crazy they've been this season. I waited to long too change sliders thinking things would correct themselves but since the change I've started losing more games and things have been funner overall.

Six games into spring training in year 1 of my Tigers chise. Mostly using ST to nail down sliders, but highlights so far include a 515-foot homer by Mike Trout and a 514-foot homer by Javier Baez. Baez's had 116.8 MPH exit velocity. In Alex Reyes' 1st spring start, he recorded his first 11 outs via the strikeout. lol. Byron Buxton's walk-up song is Return of the Mack. It's a fun team.

Well, here we are, another week, another franchise. Maybe I'm not that bad, but without the OS Realism rosters, it's hard to get into a franchise. But I have them now, and I have time, so it's time to get going as the season winds down. Following in the wisdom of St. Louis's favorite Texas transplant, Rogers Hornsby, I'll be focusing in on baseball all winter.

"People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."

In light of that, let's get going. I will be using WTNY and Teeds' OS Realism roster, my own slider set, and the object of my obsession, the St. Louis Cardinals. I received the number 3 pick in the draft.

Team Analysis

As everyone can see, I'm a bit Cardinal biased. My favorite player is Piscotty and I can't imagine Molina in another uniform, so he comes along too. You'll notice I'm keeping Flaherty, DeJong, and Sierra down. Sierra won't be up too soon, with a trio of great outfielders blocking his path, plus he's only 21 and has a highly inflated overall because of his speed. I'm going to try Espinosa at short because of his insane defense, but I'm guessing he won't be hitting that well and DeJong will be joining me soon. Flaherty I just want to keep under team control as long as I can, so if Wainwright can perform well, I'll keep Flaherty in the minors to develop. Otherwise, if he costs me too many games, he can shift to the bullpen.

The team has a pretty good mix of power, contact, and speed. A.J. Pollock, or Fish Sticks (he wears number 11), is probably the premier table setter available in the 2nd round, Trout is trout, Hoskins can provide some pop, and Molina and Piscotty are just plain ol' good hitters. Good outfield defense, good up the middle, and decent at the corners. The weakness is defense probably, not a lot on the infield besides Espinosa. But we'll see what happens. With Kendrick, the team has a really good 2nd place hitter. His job is get Pollock over for Trout. Not to spoil anything, but in the first 3 games he is doing his job very well. I like Hoskins, but I'm musing trading him for a power hitting 3B somewhere along the line. It would allow more flexibility with offseason signings and midseason callups because Piscotty can play 1st and the outfield, and right now the outfield is a logjam. Being able to shift him to first means I can call up Bader when he's ready and Sierra as well, and also possibly acquire someone like Randal Grichuk as a 4th outfielder to fill that gap.

I'm also a little disappointed that your OF is only 2/3 fishy if you take my meaning. Can't you resurrect Mike Carp's career and platoon him?

And yes, I think a left handed slugger is going to be on the list because I noticed that it’s right heavy too.

Update: 6 games in and they are 3-3. I traded hoskins to the Indians for Travis Shaw; faster, better defense, and left handed at third base is a huge boon for this team. he is in a major slump but once I change his swing follow through to two handed like its supposed to be I bet he pulls out of it.

I’m actually amazed at the wins. Other than Martinez ( who is a machine after two starts) the other pitchers haven’t been that good. And until this last game mike trout had two hits out of about 17 at bats. Yadier is raking, Pollock is getting on base like crazy, and Kendrick is a singles machine right now.

The biggest surprise is Zach Walters. He is hitting about .400 and has been on base more than he has been out, drawing three walks in one game alone. If he keeps hitting, his versatility may be what keeps this team afloat. Like a power hitting Zobrist, he is the glue that can really complete a team.
