Re: Official MLB The Show 17 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread

I have the hardest time drafting an even roster. I can alternate position player/pitcher every other pick, but once I get past the 25 man roster I feel like that only gives me one or two good prospects left. I wish there was a guide that told me what to draft when. It's tough for such a long draft and letting the team draft itself is also horrible bc they'll draft old players and etc.

          June 13th

The Yankees are 1 game into a 4 game road-series against the Angels, and started things off on the right foot with a victory. As it stands now, the Yankees sit in 2nd place in the AL East with a 40-23 record. The bullpen woes, and lack of production from the bottom of the order, as well as Tim Anderson are worrysome. Whats more, is aside from Marcus Stroman & Steven Matz, the rotation has been nothing to write home about.

Heres a look at the Yankees stat's through today's date:

          First Year Player Draft Results
Round 1: SP Tim Washburn (R): A 22 year old right-hander from Minnesota, Washburn projects as a future ace. Boasting a 4 pitch arsenal, plus stamina & velocity, Washburn just needs to fine tune things. (56 Overall / 96 Potential)

Round 2: LF Chang-Ho Lee (L): The 21 year old native of Taiwan, Lee was drafted due to his bat. A professional hitter, the Yankees love what they see in Lee. Don't be surprised if he forces his way onto the roster in 2018, if only as the DH. (75 Overall / 72 Potential)

Round 3: C Brent Evers (R): Evers will have some time to grow in the system being only 19 years old. The Yankees love Evers bat tool, and are intrigued by his possibilities on defense. Evers was the first of 2 catchers drafted by the Yankees, but may not be the best of the two. (67 Overall / 65 Potential)

Round 4: SP Chris Espinosa (L): Espinosa is just 18 years old, and is a power lefty. The downside on Espinosa is he only throws 3 pitches. Either way, he is likely to end up a key contributor for the Yankees going forward. (73 Overall / 73 Potential)

Round 5: RP Tyler Holmes (R): Another 18 year old pitcher, the Yankees hope Holmes will turn into an anchor in the pen. At 6'5'', with plenty of power and 4 pitches, the sky's the limit for Holmes. (Overall 70 / Potential 82)

Round 6: C David McCreedy (S): McCreedy has an above average contact bat for a catcher, and serviceable tools on defense at the moment. If he can improve in one of the two areas, its a safe bet he will be playing for the Bombers. (61 Overall / 63 Potential)

Round 7: RP Todd Hammond (R): As goes the theme, the Yankees selected another power pitcher in the draft. Hammond has a long way to go though, and may wind up a career minor leaguer. (Overall 52 / Potential 62)

          Trades
6/12: Yankees acquire 1B Justin Morneau & RP Trevor May from the White Sox in exchange for RP Trevor Gott, 1B Tyler Moore & CF Trey Griffey

6/9: Rays acquire C Miguel Montero from the Rangers in exchange for SP Sean Newcomb

6/6: Cardinals acquire SP Drew Pomeranz from the Nationals in exchange for 1B Carlos Santana & RP Luis Avilan.

          Yankees Trade
As mentioned above, the Yankees decided to pull the trigger on an early move. Morneau should provide a big upgrade in the bottom of the lineup as he carry's a .257 average on the season. Trevor May will get a shot at the pen, along with Matt Bowman and Neil Wagner, who were already in the Yankees system. The Yankees can stomach Morneau's salary & extra year due to their big budget, and top prospect Cody Bellinger tearing it up in AAA. Although it was sad to see Trevor Gott leave, the Yankees were becoming concerned he may have bigger problems than just a prolonged slump, and felt as though they had the depth both now and in the future to replace him.

            Danny Salazar
            Yordano Ventura
            Carlos Rodon
            Kenta Madea
            Michael Fulmer

Ender Inciarte was lost for the season to a ACL knee injury. A big blow to Ender who was firmly entrenched at the lead off spot. He was on fire out of the gate.

Since that injury we moved Starling Marte to the lead off role where he has flourished.

Brock Holt has pushed out Yoan Moncada (for now) at 2B. Holt's bat has been too good to keep out of the lineup. Moncada is not thrilled, but he has been not a consistent performer and defensively is nothing special.

Byron Buxton and Jacob Herzberg are battling for the LF spot. So far Jacob Herzberg has done enough to keep the starting gig as his speed and base running havoc as well as his high bunting skills have afforded him a longer leash. He is starting to heat up too. He has such a high ceiling. Great defensive skills, high contact and excellent speed. Kid is just getting started (19 years old).

Bryce Harper went 3-4 (HR 3 RBI's) in his last game and his bat is finally going. He has had a rough start to the Year 2 campaign. After landing on the DL for 5 weeks he was slow to get going, but finally had a multi hit game (vs the Reds) last night.

The concern I have for this team is the farm system. It is a C+ type of farm. And that is on me. I traded several excellent prospects in landing Salvador Perez and Danny Salazar at the deadline last season.....but it netted me a World Series title (my first ever on The Show mind you).

So yes.......having a good fantasy draft team will indeed bring much love for you playing this game. Storylines galore to be had.

I am looking forward to drafting another team doing that 30 team control draft (The one thing I regret is going single team control with my Cardinals chise but it has been fine and not a deal breaker) with the latest OSFM roster (2.4 From Ridin).

I finally decided to play in the N.L West as The Colorado Rockies.

            Should be a blast.

The draft will happen once I complete Year 2 of The Matheny Manifesto (playing it on quick counts now as well as siming some games in QM to speed things up).

Stay Tuned for an All-Star Break report on the Manifesto!!! Going for 2nd straight World Series title baby!!!

That is one hell of a team man!!!

Starting Pitching is not great, but that bullpen is ridiculous.

Re: Official MLB The Show 17 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread

                      Prospect Report

As the Yankees close in on July (six games left in May), a look at the young prospects seems to be in order. Top 50 Status, season stat's, development and more to be discussed.

First, we dive into NY's prospects with Top 50 status :

#18 MLB / #1 NYY: 1B Cody Bellinger (L): Bellinger is by and far the Yankees top prospect. After seeing a short time on the DL to open up the season, Bellinger has slid right back into the #3 hole in Scranton and produced. Bellinger is sporting a .287 average with 4 home runs & 20 rbi's in only 167 AB's. Scouts across the league are beaming over Bellinger's potential, and as a result, he has taken a rating's boost in every category. Going forward, it's hard to pin-point a debut for the young slugger. With Justin Morneau, Michael Saunders & Josh Willingham blocking his most obvious paths to the the show, it may take a bit for Bellinger to don the pin stripes. (69 Overall / A Pot) *MLB ETA Mid-Late 2017*

#45 MLB / #2 NYY: SP Robert Stephenson (R): Stephenson highlights the Yankee's pitching prospects. He throws hard, but is still inconsistent. As a result, he is sporting a 4.37 ERA over 80 IP. With the state of the Yankee's rotation, it would not be a shock to see a call-up to the show in Stephenson's future. (65 Overall / B Pot) *MLB ETA Mid-Late 2017*

Now onto breaking down the rest of the Yankee's top 15:

#3: 3B Matt Chapman (R): Matt Chapman is quietly establishing himself as a solid hitter, to go along with his rocket arm at third base. The Yankee's love Chapman and drafted him with the hopes that he would eventually be able to man the hot-corner for the team. Chapman is currently batting 4th in Scranton, protecting Bellinger and sports a .260 average with 3 HR & 27 RBI to go along with 19 Runs scored. With Adam Rosales performing at the Major League level, it is unlikely Chapman would be called upon in a season the Yankees are surprisingly looking like World Series contenders. (Overall 69 / Pot B) *MLB ETA 2018*

#4: SP Marco Gonzales (L): Gonzales stock has been sky-rocketing all season long, but young, talented & controllable left handed pitchers tend to have that effect on scouts. Gonzales doesn't have over-powering stuff, and seems likely to peak as a #3, with more realistic expectations as an innings eating 4th or 5th starter. The 25 Year old sports a 2.85 ERA over 94.2 IP and 69K/53BB. Look for teams to expect Gonzales to be involved in any trades the Yankees want to make. (Overall 68 / Pot C) *MLB ETA Late 2017*

#5: CF Boog Powell (L): The lefty/lefty Powell currently has 4th outfielder abilities. The hope is, with some time in the minors focusing on his arm strength & consistency at the plate, Powell can blossom into a starting caliber player. Powell has struggled at the lead off spot in Scranton this year, to the tune of a .244 Avg with 4 HR, 25 RBI & 29 Runs scored. (Overall 66 / Pot C) *MLB ETA 2018*

#6: SP Shane Dawson (R): A 23 year old Canadian, Dawson is currently on the disabled list with a herniated disc, and expected to miss 2-3 weeks of action. As far as stuff, Dawson has #2 written all over him. The knock on Dawson has and continues to be his lack of moxie. Dawson will need to work on his control issues, ability to strand runners, and stay on the mound if he intends to have a successful career. (Overall 66 / Pot C) *MLB ETA 2019*

#7: SP Jordan Montgomery (L): Montgomery is the second most likely player to crack the Major League roster this season. Part of that is due to the Yankees struggles in the rotation, and part of it is due to the young left handers impressive stuff. Hard luck has led Montgomery to a 2-10 record at Scranton, but he carries a 3.97 ERA over 93 IP with 54K / 32BB. (Overall 66/ Pot C) *MLB ETA 2017*

#8: RP Matt Bowman (R): Bowman has recently been called into action for the Major League club, due to the trade of Trevor Gott. Bowman has the stuff to be a reliable major league reliever, and the hope is that he is able to provide quality innings for the Yankees. (Overall 75 / Pot C) *MLB ETA Now*

#9: RP Trevor May (R): Another player connected to Trevor Gott, May was acquired in the deal that sent Gott to the White Sox. While with the Sox, the former top prospect was struggling to the tune of a 4.15 ERA over 47.2 IP to go along with 54K / 24BB at the major league level. Not that this type of production would be awful, the Yankees believe the former top prospect may benefit from some time down at AAA. (Overall 72 / Pot C) *MLB ETA 2017*

#10: C Will Smith (R): The 22 Year old catcher was having a fine year in AA prior to going down with an injury. As it stands, Smith will be out another 1-2 months with a broken finger on his glove hand. With that being said, Smith was never thought to be on the fast track to the Majors. Couple that with the drafting of two catchers thought to be better prospects, Smith's future with the Yankees may be a bit murky. (Overall 62 / Pot C) *MLB ETA 2020*

#11: 2B Mike Benjamin (R): Benjamin's career looks to be that of a Utility man. He is currently spending time focusing on fielding all infield positions better, as well as looking to make more contact with the bat. (Overall 65 / Pot D) *MLB ETA 2020*

#12: RP Andrew Edwards (R): Edwards is yet another promising arm in the Yankees stable of pitchers. The 25 year old sinker baller would be a fit in any bullpen. The Yanks will hope to hold onto him and develop the young pitcher who currently sports a 3.46 ERA over 41.2 IP of 40K/20BB at AAA Scranton. (Overall 66 / Pot C) *MLB ETA Late 2018*

#13: SS Matt Williams (R): A true utlitiy man, Williams is said to have been molding his game after Ben Zobrist. With established Big leaguers blocking his way at the MLB level, this is Williams best bet to make it to the show with the Yankees. Williams is currently sporting a .256 Avg, 4 HR, 21 RBI, 6 SB & 29 Runs scored at AAA Scranton. (Overall 61 / Pot C) *MLB ETA 2019*

#14: 3B Drew Robinson (L): Robinson's stock has soured through the league, though the yankees hope they can rebuild some of it. (Overall 59 / Pot C) *MLB ETA 2021*

#15: SP Shane Watson (R): The Big Californian has been impressing in Trenton. The 23 year old sports a 5-3 record, with a 3.59 ERA over 67.2 IP. Watson projects as a back end starter, but may not end the year in the Yankees organization, as there have been many big league scouts at his starts, as of late. (Overall 55 / Potential C) *MLB ETA 2020*

                      Summary

All in all, the Yankees feel good about their prospects, especially after the strong draft class of 2017. It will be interesting how strong the system will remain if the Yankees make any other moves to fortify the team for the post season.

                      Next Up

A reunion of sorts is in order, as the Yankees travel to Chicago to face off with the White Sox. Just two weeks ago, the Yankees sent RP Trevor Gott, 1B Tyler Moore & CF Trey Griffey to the WS for 1B Justin Morneau & RP Trevor May. Moore & Morneau will look to prove why their new teams traded for them.

** I have decided to manage mode the rest of the season, until Sept 1. At that point, it will be back to playing all games (a lot of this decision had to do with my excitement about our draft class). In doing so, I have been jumping into games in my own "critical situations". The injury bug bit a few times, but not horribly. Big sept 1 update hopefully tomorrow.

                        September 1st

September is upon us, and the post season is just around the corner. The Yankees enter the final month of the season in a good position, with the best record in the American League at 84-50. It is interesting to point out, that the best team in baseball is the Mets with a record of 86-48. Will we have Subway World Series? Only time will tell, for now lets focus on the road to the post season.

The Yankees made a few moves in the month of August. Veteran starting pitcher Bartolo Colon was signed, and has since made 4 starts in the rotation. The big fella replaced Jake Peavy, who was beginning to look tired down the stretch. Jordan Montgomery was called up from AAA and took Chris Capuano's slot in the rotation. Capuano no doubt was a big help to the Yankees this season, but his skills have begun to regress rapidly. Lastly on the pitching side, Robert Stephenson has been called up, and will serve in the pen. The Yankees hope that Stephenson will gain some valuable experience playing down the stretch, and provide another big arm to the pen come October.

On the position player side of things, the Yankees called up Eric Young Jr. to serve as a pinch runner. GM Joe Smith loves Young's speed, and felt it would be a game changer in the post season.

Heres a look at the Yankees stat lines up until this point:

                          Series Sweep

The Yankees opened up September with 3 wins against the Red Sox.

In Game 1 of the series, Bartolo Colon only lasted 5 innings, allowing 5 earned runs. The Yankees were able to pull it together, and earn the victory, with Robert Stephenson getting his first action of the season, pitching 2.1 innings & striking out 3. Rasiel Iglesias earned his 31st save of the season. Final 6-5

Game 2 of the series was a pitchers duel all the way, with a total of 9 combined hits. Marcus Stroman outdueled Justin Verlander, and earned his Major League leading 21st win of the season. Stroman tallied 9k's over 7 innings of 3 hit ball. Rasiel Iglesias earned his 32nd save of the season. Final 3-1

Game 3 of the series came down to the wire, with the Yankees scoring 3 times in the 9th to win the game 5-4. Steven Matz didn't have his best stuff, allowing 4 runs over 5 innings. The bullpen was able to keep the yankees in it, as the offense rewarded Bryan Morris with a walk off win. Final 5-4

Not sure if you guys are already aware of this but I just figured out how to avoid the CPU calling up a top prospect on September 5th. On September 4th, I sent Cody Bellinger down to single A. When I simulated the day after the game, rosters had expanded and bellinger was still in single A, not acruing service time! Again, not sure if you all knew this would fix the issue, but I am glad I have finally realized this. Bellinger had no place on our roster at this point, and I didn't want to burn any service time for him just yet. Guessing this will work with the 40 mans for spring training as well.

Oh it is! He was in the OS roster I used. One of the first 2 versions. 38 years old but he can rake!
