Convince me to switch to directional hitting

I noticed this was the default on the game's load page. I've been using analog with flick since last year's game, with stride before that (but I didn't like how goofy it made the replays look).

Why should I switch to directional? I like the power vs/ contact swing aspect, if I'm down 2 in the 9th I wanna swing for the fences and not leave it up to the fates. But timing it seems so easy, I want at least some challenge.

    Thoughts appreciated.

I'm an analog with stride guy. Have been since 11 and will never go back. Just find it so rewarding to tee one up with perfect timing using the stick, rather than just click a button.

For what it's worth, with analog you can press Square or Circle before the pitch for either power or contact, and it triggers the same impact of the different face buttons.

It takes player ratings into effect. I have never used another hitting mode and I have played this game since MLB 07.

Don't you put up ludicrous numbers then? I just found it way too easy, but am wondering if that was just 3 innings of beginner's luck. I do have games where I hack at everything with analog and have the frustrating 1 run on 10 hit performance-- open to directional, just want to know that it doesn't get too easy.

No not at all. To me, it is the best way to hit for realistic numbers. There are a lot of others on OS who will vouch for this hitting mode too.

I also don't use it as Directional. I turn off the camera movement feature and use it strictly as Timing Hitting.

Gotta give it a bigger sample size than 3 innings. Every game is different just like real life baseball.

I played a game the other night with the Phillies against the Pirates and I crushed them 10-2. Played a game last night and I couldn't have hit the ball if it was a beach ball. Lol.

Agree 100%. If you want ratings to matter, go with directional/timing.

It was still too random when I tried to use it in '16. Is that the case in '17? I had used timing hitting every year up until 13 when the timing window was changed and seemed to affect the randomness of timing hitting. I've used zone ever since.

Personally I enjoy zone hitting the most. I haven't played except for the install game and then had to goto bed and it awaits for me after work and always use all star difficulty except for throwing I have that set to veteran cause I was get mad at something where I barely make a mistake and it doesn't feel like a sim anymore.

Interesting. I will say, I was 3/3 with a HR/2B/1B with Kris Bryant, and couldn't hit anything down the middle with Jake Arrietta.

You sold me on ratings. Going to give it a shot.

Re: Convince me to switch to directional hitting

This is a good conversation every year. I use zone with the PCI off. Zone gives you by far the most control and is the most rewarding in my opinion.

I feel like timing options are way too reliant on ratings and luck. I want to be in control at the plate, and if I get beat because I am looking inside and the pitch is a breaking ball away....well then so be it.

Zone is still timing based too, it just adds another element. If you time it perfectly AND you get the PCI on the ball, you have a much better chance at a base hit than if you just time it right on directional.

So, kinda like Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball on N64, generally?

Yep, I was directional for a long time but finally switched to Zone last year and never looked back. By far my favorite hitting mode. It actually allows your to sit on pitches AND locations

I use zone in RTTS (where I feel like I should have more control over my success), and directional elsewhere (where I want ratings to be more in play).

I suck at both anyways so it doesn't make much of a difference

Pretty much. Similar to how I used to hit on MVP 2005 too, flick the left stick in the direction of the ball and time your swing. You definitely need more of a plan at the plate, but if you get the pitch you're sitting on, it feels pretty dang good.

Also, with hitters with bigger zones, you can sit middle of the plate early or late in the count and it essentially becomes timing. There's just a lot of different ways you can approach an at bat.

I was the opposite; I was zone for the longest time but it got to the point that no matter what batter it was, they all hit the same because it was me controlling the input.

I switched to timing (now directional) and have stuck with it. You actually see a huge difference between your star hitters and your platoon players as ratings are the end all be all.

I will say that directional is not for everyone. If you like having control over every aspect of the game, zone is for you. If you enjoy letting the ratings play out and are able to accept the randomness that is associated with it, then directional is for you. IMO baseball is random in real life as good timing is still only a hit a fraction of the time (and you can whiff with perfect timing as well), and bad timing can still be a hit sometimes too. That is what really makes directional enjoyable for me
