I remember during one of the twitch streams the devs talked about how secondary positions didn't give certain guys as big of a ratings hit, depending on the position. For instance a SS playing at 2B shouldn't be big hit because 2B is lower on the defensive spectrum. Does anyone know the actual hit to ratings for positions or remember what was said? I'm curious about moving guys around in the OF as well, like RF playing in LF.

Playing guys at secondary positions - what's your philosophy?
I looked for a thread about this for 2017 but couldn't find anything.

If I move a RF'er to left, he's going to need at least a 60 field and 60 range rating if he never played LF IRL before.
If I move a LF'er to right, he's going to need at least a 70 arm strength if he never played RF IRL before.OSFM23 - Building Better Baseball - OSFM23

Bump because the info was a little unspecific and secondary positions are my lifeblood as a manager.Comment

I don't remember what the devs said but it would be worth someone looking up the archive as they were specific.
I want to say there was a specific ratings drop if you move a player to a position that is listed as secondary, but that % drop is smaller this year.
And if you move a player to a position that is NOT listed as secondary, they get a massive ratings drop. So a third baseman who does not have SS or 2B listed as secondary will have a slow double play animation. Put someone at catcher who shouldn't be there and he will let a lot of balls by.

All 1B can play RF
All 2B can play at least SS/3B
All 3B can play at leat 1B and corner OF
All SS can play all positions except Catcher
All CF can play RF/LF
All corner OF's can play at least other corner OF and 1BComment

Re: Playing guys at secondary positions - what's your philosophy?
last year I started a Rangers season but couldnt grow attached to the team so abandoned it.
Anywho,I seriously considered moving Shin-Soo Cho from right to first but just couldnt pull the trigger.
If I play a Rangers season in 17 I'm moving him and will platoon him with Napoli.
Incidentally Napoli still has a 72 block rating at catcher despite not being behind the dish last 4 seasons.OSFM23 - Building Better Baseball - OSFM23

yes, 1B is a position any one can play. I apply that philosophy to edit all players in the league and it is great, imo. I played SS and was good enough to play Division 1 or 2 (as a 2nd baseman - weak arm - outstanding glove) and coaches at that level agree with that philosophy.Comment

Re: Playing guys at secondary positions - what's your philosophy?
For instance, if I put Machado at SS will he be elite there or just average. It depends on what his ratings hit is since his primary is 3B. I'm tempted to play an average defensive SS at 3B and play Machado at SS, but I am not sure it's worth it if both are taking a ratings hits by playing a secondary position.Comment

Whatever the case, I wish two things:
1) AI teams would better utilize secondary positions (what are you seeing?)
2) User and AI teams could/would teach a player a new position, based on his age, athletic ability, and a new morale element: work ethic.

Re: Playing guys at secondary positions - what's your philosophy?
Are you saying these are like automatic secondary positions? Carlos Santana played RF for their series in Arizona this weekend with no DH and Encarnacion at 1B. It's annoying that I can't edit his secondary to add RF, but are you saying he automatically has RF as secondary with no significant ratings hit?Comment
