People, chill the hell out. You're like the "hardcore" vs. "casual" battle in MMA fandom...sheesh.

I thought that there needed to be a 3 run or fewer lead -- don't know why, just something I picked up somewhere years ago. So MY BAD.

    Now calm down, Ye Purists.

A team could be up 50-0, and as long as the same pitcher (who isn't the starter) throws the last 3 innings they are awarded a save.

And if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does.

I actually had nothing else to tell you about the save rule that hasn't already been covered.

Though that 3 innings Save doesn't appear to be credited for Missions despite showing as such in the End of Game Stat Summary.

Relax it has nothing to do with being a purist.

Just knowledge of the rules of the game.

Yes, this has already been established earlier in the thread, right? So, just had to chime in...?

I posted about this yesterday, in a 6-6 game I got to the lead 7-6 in the top of the 10th, Holland had 3 Ks in the bottom of the 10 with held on for a 7-6 win, Lyle's got the win but they didn't give Holland the save.

                            Re: No save? Come on.

having read the original post again, and my situation the other day, we both had struck out the side.. perhaps the bug is if your closer strikes out the side, you don't get credited a save or something.

off topic Saves and Wins and losses stats are a joke BTW, they are the worst stat in baseball ever!! a closer can blow a 4-0 lead and get a win for it because the offence saves him by walking off after he screws the lead up and can screw a starter out of a win. I HATE the win loss save

and to further that, MLB the show seems to think wins and losses mean something when the commentators talk, also it's a big part and the all star voting you notice lots of guys having more wins get more votes, and I kid you not hot and cold streaks look at that closely in the game I see guys with ERA of 2 who are 0-4 get classed as being in a cold streak, and a pitcher who has a ERA over 4 who is 3-1 as a hot streak.

wins and loss stat is a useless stat and should be banned along with the save stat its all for the stupid fantasy players

                              Re: No save? Come on.

There is nothing wrong the stat. Every statistic has merit if calculated correctly and if showing what it's indicated to. This includes quality starts.

The problem is the inferences of these stats. Managers intentionally put in closers in save situations; it happened on Opening Day this year. That's their money maker right now. Again, inferences. Not the stats themselves.

Someone else mentioned that the future is putting them in the most important part of the game. I don't know why that's not the present. If you have the 3-4-5 hitters coming up in the 8th inning and are all RH, then 6-7-8 due up in the 9th and are all LH, managers will still put in their LHP setup man in the 8th and the RHP closer in the 9th because "that's baseball." Ridiculous.

As for the OP, I don't understand why Diaz did not receive a save in that situation.

You're basically admitting that you agree the stat is a problem.

Do you think manager's would be putting in their "closer" in those situation if the save stat didn't exist?
