What's your strategy for drafting in your franchises?

    Topic.

I usually look at where I have a low number of players (like if I only have 4 LF) or where there's a gap, like if Hanley is rated 85 and the next 1B is rated 62, etc.

    What about you?

I've been considering this. But what determines that for you? I usually pick the highest potential at the position I'm looking at.

I look for the tools I need. With my player editing system guys can always change positions but there are severe limits to how much I can effect their ratings. So if I need power, I draft power. If I need pitch velocity, etc, etc.

I seek the players I fully scouted and if not there best available player at any position.

For the first few rounds I draft the best player on the board and avoid any player that hasn't been scouted heavily.

If I'm in serious need of a catcher or middle infielder I will look at position and try to draft a college player. Same with pitchers. But I would never draft a LF because I need a LF. You can put any good player in LF.

I prefer to just go for the highest ceiling on the board and if it doesn't happen to be someone I need or I am not confident they will develop (or if I don't like playing in game with them) then I will trade 'em pretty quick and take advantage of the high potential.

Once the scouted players are gone, I let the CPU finish the draft.

I try and cater my scouting to my thinnest positions so I can draft the best available at those. I'm really thin at 3rd so I drafted a guy 75 potential with power but is going to struggle in the field projected 2020. And a guy good in the field and good contact with no power 75 potential projected 2022. I'm in year two and my top three 3rd basemens contracts expire 2020.

Oh, I just have rules for what I'm allowed to edit on my players. It's mostly just "stretching out" pitchers (trading Durability for Stamina), and managing regression in what I feel is a more realistic manner.

There is nothing special to it, I'm just editing players in the manage roster screen. Usually during the off-season.

Oh, okay. I do something similar. Is there a way to edit defensive ratings during franchise mode?

Go to manage roster, select the player you want to edit, select the edit player option.

I usually take over bad teams in need of a rebuild like my Reds. I tend to start with pitching in the first round of my first draft. They are always top 5 the first few years. The next year or two I draft and trade to build a bullpen. In '17 you can get solid B potential guys in the 6th round. I usually bring up my SP prospects by 23-25 so I need a good pen. I used to get a blue Chip CP every year and turn two of theminto set up men.
For position players I look 3 years down the road and try to project a lineup and draft by need for that year.
Lately I've been doing 30 team control and drafting for each team because I got tired of seeing a bunch of D's go in round 1. That kept a lot of bad teams bad.

I think it depends on the round. First few rounds, without a doubt, pick the player with the biggest upside. But in the ensuing rounds will probably be a lot of more ready sooner/lower celing guys.

Until we can have custom draft classes like every other sports game, I let my scout pick whomever he sees fit.
