    sorry for the old bump

for you guys that draft the best player available, no matter what.

if you draft 2 players from the same position (excluding pitchers) do you do that with the intention of having one of them change positions or do you let it ride and keep them where they are, let the chips fall where they may?

If I like both players and keep them in my organization, I usually just let them compete for that position throughout the minors. Occasionally I'll trade one if I'm deep at that position.

For example, last year in my Padres franchise I had two shortstops that played well, except one of them was horrendous in the field--I moved him to second base since he had a better bat. They were both called up to the MLB the same year and combined for a decent middle infield; however, the better fielding SS kept getting hurt and became a really poor hitter, so I acquired a more durable guy through Free Agency.

I wanted to trade the oft-injured Gold Glove candidate, but I ended up keeping him in AAA as organizational depth in case his career turned around.

I usually keep them in their current position, unless I have a desperate need in another position that one prospect is well suited for.

The key thing to remember is that two good prospects does not equal two good MLB players, but it DOES equal two good trade assets. Sometimes building your system is more about maximizing its trade value than drafting the best suited players.

Draft best available player. Changing positions is real, Billy Hamilton was drafted a SS moved to CF. So I have no issues changing positions. As long as they're fielding attributes fit. So if I have two 1B I will either move one to LF or 2B, unless he has a strong arm then I could move him to 3B.

Potential is the stat i value most, but not at the expense age vs ETA. No point in a 46 OVR 24 year old even if he has A potential, could be 30 by the time hes MLB ready. Also avoid guys who already peaked. No point in a C potential player who's already 70+ he will only regress.

But say you land an 18 year old B potential player who 60 OVR. Has a lot of time to improve his potential if he plays good enough.
