Re: Catchers' Pitch Call / API
I believe it is random. If anything could affect it, my guess is the catcher's fielding rating. -

I believe I have read that their are hidden ratings behind it, but I could be dreaming.Watch me game on Twitch!

Re: Catchers' Pitch Call / API
It's not "random" in the strictest sense as there's definitely logic behind it - likely the same logic used by the AI when it's pitching. For example, you're far more likely to see a target on the edges or out of the strike zone when the batter is behind in the count, and closer to the middle if the pitcher is falling behind. As pitchers tire you're going to see more targets towards the middle too to make up for the fact that they'll miss locations more frequently (and by a larger amount).
Are there ratings that dictate it? That, I couldn't say.Comment

Re: Catchers' Pitch Call / API
I find that the catcher often calls for pitches that he shouldn't be calling in certain situations..Comment

Re: Catchers' Pitch Call / API
This is exactly why I asked the question. When my backup catcher is in the game, he tends to call for the fastball 80% of the time, even if its the pitcher's #3 pitch. With the same pitcher, my starting catcher mixes things up pretty well.Comment

Re: Catchers' Pitch Call / API
I'm pretty sure there's absolutely no sound baseball logic behind it. I've seen my catcher call for 3 sliders in a row, dead center of the plate.
I'm not an expert, but I personally think 3 sliders in a row, right down broadway is as bad as pitch calling can get.Comment

Re: Catchers' Pitch Call / API
#1 you obviously dont look at percentages of fastballs that are thrown IRL, no matter who is pitching. (Fyi 4-seam, 2-seam, cutters, and sinkers are all fastballs)
#2 i dont believe whoever said the Cather called for 3 pitches right down the middle. Youre making that up to prove your case and thats just ridiculous.
#3 i do think is a great question... to know if there is a difference between catchers and their calling of the game but theres no way someone should hate on the overall logic they use in calling pitches. It is pretty damn good except for how often they ask for pitches up in the zone.

Re: Catchers' Pitch Call / API
Chris Archer is another guy who throws the slider almost as much as his four seam. But the game, again, wants fastballs 80% of the time.

Re: Catchers' Pitch Call / API
This is not my milieu, but I do not believe there is any catcher/pitcher specific AI associated with the API. IIRC, the AI provides suggestions based on a more general strategy/approach. It will track a HUM player's tendencies and look at some situational criteria in order to make some "on the fly" adjustments. Essentially, what would an AI controlled pitcher most likely do if it were in the player's situation..."Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"Comment

Re: Catchers' Pitch Call / API
Did you actually listen to him on the calls? If you didn't, then it's not that weird for him to call for it multiple times. If you did, then that's another story.Comment

Re: Catchers' Pitch Call / API
I found out the hard way that the Catcher is one of the guys on the team that actually doesn't like me 😀
For the most part I will follow their suggestions if they are sensible but quite often I find them guiding me into trouble if you pay attention to hitter tendencies and hot/cold zones. I've been burnt by way too many up and in suggestions to a pull power hitter with men on base and the Green Monster over their shoulder. In those instances now I've learnt to shake them off and go low and away. I'm having much more success pitching after I realised what they were up to!Comment

Re: Catchers' Pitch Call / API
I too have often wondered how effective the catcher is at calling pitches. In most games, I use his suggestion about 50% of the time. The other 50% is situational for me and I throw the pitch/location that I think is best in that scenario.Comment

Re: Catchers' Pitch Call / API
I too I have seen posts that make me wonder if it actually happened... This isn't one of those times dude. Not sure how that seems unbelievable, I've had the cpu throw me 3 pitches in the same spot, not sure why the catcher can't call it 3 times in the same spot. Take the edge off your comments.

Right down the pipe? Ive been playing this game since its inception and have yet to see the catcher call for a pitch dead center...so im not buying that.
No one is disputing whether or not the catcher calls for identical pitches 3 times in a row or 1 location 3 times in a row....
I am disputing that his catcher called for not 1 pitch right down the middle, but 3!
My point was he didn't need to over exaggerate to prove his point and i stand by it.
