For likeness it is personality rights, which does not have an international standard, so they fall under the country's laws. So let's say for a photo you take, copyright currently lasts life of creator plus 70 years, or a flat 95 years for corporate authorship. So these are likely to extend past the expiration of the personality rights.

However California (since it has the most celebrities) enacted a law where it is for life, plus 70 years (when passed down to family), there are a dozen or so other states that follow suit.

Copyrights prior to 1923 have expired, but not sure how the renewal works on that.

It is all complex no matter what, lol. So in other words, long past our time for them to lift.
Thats all very informative, so thank you. So if its life +70, then the celebs who passed away in the late 40s are now public domain? There would certainly be some former ballplayers who would fall into that. And as time moves forward into those who died in the 50s and 60s, a whole lot more will soon then.

And as someone who was born in late 1977, its an interesting and easy break for me to remember in the music section, lol. Anything in my lifetime has different rules than those from before I was born.
Anyone who claims to be a fan of two teams in the same pro sport is actually a fan of none.

Life+70 is just the copyright on created works (music, literature, etc). No idea how something like likeness would apply.

I am honestly not sure how it fully works in that regard. I am not a patent/copyright lawyer, I just know some of the basics through the music industry, as well as starting my own corporation, and reading up on some things. But I would imagine with how it is worded, that there is an expiration, and therefore can be used. But again, there could be other factors at play as well with royalties, etc..

In the United States is called 'Right to Publicity' or 'Personality Rights'... they fall under state laws. Most of the state laws are the same or very similar to California's 'Celebrity Rights Act' which is Life + 70 years, and can be handed down to family (estate).

Here is the list of all states that recognize this right.

The 'Lanham Act' is what protects federally.

Like I said, it is complex and sticky, and not as lenient as it used to be in the 'wild west' of sport games in the 90's. Most do not even realize the complexity of it all, so a lot went unnoticed, then the Jim Brown and NCAA cases happened, and it changed the landscape for developers to now err on the side of caution and just do it proper. But as you can see, there is a LOT to it, which requires a lot of legal research. So it is not as simple as some think. And this is all before the negotiation stage to the estate or ex-player. I do not envy that role in game development, lol.

I'd buy them all: Comiskey, Tiger, KC and Baltimore Memorial, Ebbets (I know), Baker Bowl, Seal Stadium, Colt Stadium, Candlestick, Cleveland Municipal, Buffalo War Memorial (where a lot of "The Natural" was shot, Jack Murphy, RFK, Metropolitan Stadium (Minnesota, this was in MVP at some point and I loved it), Mile High ...

I play every franchise game ... so variety is the spice.

I would love the spring training parks in Florida and Arizona plus some of the minor league parks at the AA and AAA level. I would definitely pay for that.

Re: Would you support DLC Classic Stadiums

Of course I want a create-a-stadium feature but if they won't give us that then I'd love them to show some creativity like All Star Baseball 05 did. I mean watch these videos, along with the classics ones I shared in my original post to start this thread. I had forgotten how much All Star packed into 05 (most likely because MVP was the superior title that year in terms of gameplay.)

Also, I do miss the golden age of baseball games where we got several MLB games in a year. I use to buy at least two of them because I loved baseball that much. ASB 05 even had a cool expansion mode feature as well.

I probably wouldn't buy classic stadium DLC but I'd buy create a stadium DLC if it's good.

I would just support more realistic Minor League Stadiums as there are some really nice ones out there.
And if they made like 10 classic stadiums and sold them for 2.99 a piece id be ok with that as long as we could pick the Stadium/Stadiums of our choice.

Serious question, how much are you willing to spend for this game?

Re: Would you support DLC Classic Stadiums

I think it would be acceptable for anything to be on DLC that isn't part of today's baseball game. Classic players, stadiums, teams, etc...

Personally I wouldn't pay for it anyway because I don't care for that type of stuff, but I don't see it as a problem. As long as there's no DLC barriers that prevent me from enjoying 2018-era baseball, I'm cool with it.

Though I do think there should be some sort of carry over so people aren't expected to buy the same DLC every year.

Well, given that it's ~$20 for a new release 2 hour movie on BluRay...$60 is a steal for 100s of hours of entertainment.

I would be willing to double that $60 by buying that same value of DLC packages for stadiums and such provided that they were the same high quality content we get for the stadiums already in-game. Now, if that would be assuming about 10-12 stadiums (or ~$5-6 each, which I believe isn't too far off what people pay for multi-player maps for FPS games).

I know that not everyone can afford that, but I also understand that licensing and such can elevate costs for devs to the point where the base game price is prohibitive. I've dropped a decent chunk on buying table packs for Pinball Arcade because I am an aficionado and derive enjoyment from it. Yeah, I'd love everything to be included for in the base price, but that isn't always possible.

I agree with this. If it is DLC one year, it is included the next and you move on to new DLC stadiums. I like the way you think.

God, I would love this! I'd pay for additional classic stadiums and even uniforms if they found a way to incorporate.

When this has come up in the past, providing additional stadiums through DLC, Ramone has said it is not going to happen. They seem reluctant to take a gamble on the costs for licensing, blueprints, and internal time/effort development costs without knowing they will make a profit on final product. I don't believe SDS believes there is enough of a market for this sort of stuff. They pretty much have said they aren't entertaining the idea now or in near future.

The classic stadiums in the game are great. We are not getting any new ones this year. To me, that indicates a move away from considering additional ones in the near future...regardless of the delivery mechanism.

                              I hope I am wrong...

It makes me sad so many of you are willing to give them new reasons to charge us for things that have been in the game for years. Can't you just buy those stubs and buy the stadiums instead of putting it behind another paywall?

DLC is here to stay obviously, but I don't see why we as the consumer should be looking for more of it when we should be pushing back and making them give us the game we pay for.
