So depending on how "small" you mean by small guys...your results sound about right.
No I know, but I get that from Zone hitting as well.

What I mean is that if I aim up with a small guy, I will pretty much just pop out or fly out. It doesn't even have to be a really small guy, it could be Kurt Suzuki, Wilmer Flores, or any of the 2017 Giants (where their HR leader was Brandon Belt with 18). I don't want to run the risk of "aiming up" and not hitting it out, because I'll just likely get out. Therefore, I won't aim up, so I most likely won't hit it out.

Now, you can say that there is enough variety with directional hitting to that you don't always hit where you aim based on several measures (including possibly sheer mathematical randomness), but it is enough influence that the user's decision to hit one way versus another can completely offset that. We have all seen when Russell would be doing a gameplay preview with IGN or something and say "I'm going to try and hit one out with Stanton" and he is aiming up and to the left. There is a reason he is not aiming down and to the right, or not going free-stick. My video where I hit like 30 consecutive homers with my maxed-out Big Daddy CAP is from aiming up with Directional Hitting as well. It just never worked out for me.

This isn't the only game to have this kind of issue. I remember when MLB Power Pros came out that I concluded it was impossible (not improbable, but impossible) to hit home runs with the contact swing. There are players that could barely make contact hitting with power though, so I'd just have to hit contact with them and bear the burden of not really getting any home runs from them. One of the only real negatives about that game, other than that they don't make any of them anymore.

I'd rather play Zone, let user ability play into the solid contact opportunities, and let ratings take care of the rest, including having some balls go out.

I use directional but NEVER influence the swing (so basically old timing) and I get realistic HR numbers from all players.

I have had huge HR seasons from power guys and seasons they struggled along with some surprising double digit HR seasons from guys like Jorge Mateo.

The balance has seemed pretty spot on for me.

Well that's fine, but at that point one might as well use timing or Zone, at least for me.

I use the button, though with 18, I'm gonna try the zone hitting with buttons, I hate the randomness and missing good pitches because I'm just doing it easy

What's funny is I hit one out with Bryce Harper in a game I played about an hour ago aiming down + power (square) swing because I just wanted to hit a line drive in the gap to get the go-ahead run in and he hit a 2-run HR of the facade on the second deck

I very, very rarely aim up. If I do, it's because I would be happy with a fly ball (or even a pop up that's better than a GIDP, especially from a weak hitter...and by that I mean like 40-45 contact and even less power). So if I'm going for a sac fly, I'll aim up and use contact (circle) swing to expand the PCI for better chances of a decent fly instead of a shallow one that won't score the run.

I get that you can get that from Zone too. It's just different type of user input, honestly.

Sometimes I use power swing (square) sometimes I bunt (triangle) but mostly I choose normal/contact (X) & rarely do I drag bunt (circle).
j/k directional all the way here.

I use directional hitting. But never choose a direction, I use it like the old timing system. I feel like I get the most realistic batting averages and homerun numbers using this. Players that should hit for high averages, and hit a lot of homeruns do, those that shouldn’t don’t.

I've long been a Directional guy, bc (for me) I felt like it best took ratings into account, but I'm open to listening to arguments otherwise.

I hope timing is still in. I cant see it being removed.

Timing was switched to directional a few years ago. However, if you don’t input a direction before the pitch, it works the same as the old timing option used to. I haven’t heard directional mentioned, or seen it used in any of the streams. I couldn’t imagine them removing it though.

Timing alone is no longer an option but if you use directional hitting without inputting any direction it's essentially what timing hitting was.

Not actually sure why I said "zone" in this case. I think if you prefer to use the left stick, then yeah zone.

I did not know this to be the case, at all. In that case, yes directional would be the way to go if you don't aim with the stick.
