Pirates drub Reds 8-0, Owens twirls One-Hitter
Starling Marte just missed out on a cycle, Gregory Polanco hit one that might have 1-hopped the Allegheny and went onto the 10th Street Bypass, and Max Moroff hit his first career HR in a 17-hit drubbing of the Cincinnati Reds.
Yet, it was Henry Owens who stole the show.
Owens might have walked Devin Mesoraco twice, but thanks to a couple of well-timed double plays, he had the Reds going in order until the 6th inning. Owens sprinkled in a few strikeouts as well, and found himself cruising into the bottom of the Reds lineup in the 8th when he left an 87-MPH up and out over the plate for Nick Senzel, who lined a looper over SS Pablo Sanchez for a 1-out single, killing the no-hitter. Owens stated after the game that he "knew as soon as he let go of the ball" that the no-hitter was over. "I just left it way too up, I had been working down and in, and down and away all day, and this one slipped. It stinks, but I'm glad that I had a defense behind me that I could trust to pick me up on the next batter". Owens pushed on, forcing a double play to end the inning, then sitting down the Reds in order in the 9th to lock up a win, bringing the Pirates to just 2.0 games back in the NL Central behind the Cubs, who lost to the Dodgers in LA later that night. Although it's still the Middle of June, it seems like the Pirates haven't stopped battling for the NL Central lead daily with the Cubs since last June.
Offensively, the Pirates were paced by Starling Marte's 3 RBI in the first 2 innings of play, where he had an 2 RBI double in the 1st, and RBI single in the 2nd. Max Moroff added two RBI, one with an RBI double in the 6th, and another with an absolute tater to the grandstands in LF for his first career HR in the 8th. Gregory Polanco added a solo mammoth shot, that bounced off the stanchions on top of the Clemente Wall and directly into the Allegheny River. Statcast put the distance on the HR at 484 Ft, tying the PNC Park Record with Sammy Sosa.
The Pirates will look to finsh off the next two games against the Reds, with one coming as the Facebook Game of the Week on Wedensday, as Gerrit Cole toes the slab for the Buccos in the series finale. Robert Stephenson will oppose him.
