Pirates drub Reds 8-0, Owens twirls One-Hitter

Starling Marte just missed out on a cycle, Gregory Polanco hit one that might have 1-hopped the Allegheny and went onto the 10th Street Bypass, and Max Moroff hit his first career HR in a 17-hit drubbing of the Cincinnati Reds.

Yet, it was Henry Owens who stole the show.

Owens might have walked Devin Mesoraco twice, but thanks to a couple of well-timed double plays, he had the Reds going in order until the 6th inning. Owens sprinkled in a few strikeouts as well, and found himself cruising into the bottom of the Reds lineup in the 8th when he left an 87-MPH up and out over the plate for Nick Senzel, who lined a looper over SS Pablo Sanchez for a 1-out single, killing the no-hitter. Owens stated after the game that he "knew as soon as he let go of the ball" that the no-hitter was over. "I just left it way too up, I had been working down and in, and down and away all day, and this one slipped. It stinks, but I'm glad that I had a defense behind me that I could trust to pick me up on the next batter". Owens pushed on, forcing a double play to end the inning, then sitting down the Reds in order in the 9th to lock up a win, bringing the Pirates to just 2.0 games back in the NL Central behind the Cubs, who lost to the Dodgers in LA later that night. Although it's still the Middle of June, it seems like the Pirates haven't stopped battling for the NL Central lead daily with the Cubs since last June.

Offensively, the Pirates were paced by Starling Marte's 3 RBI in the first 2 innings of play, where he had an 2 RBI double in the 1st, and RBI single in the 2nd. Max Moroff added two RBI, one with an RBI double in the 6th, and another with an absolute tater to the grandstands in LF for his first career HR in the 8th. Gregory Polanco added a solo mammoth shot, that bounced off the stanchions on top of the Clemente Wall and directly into the Allegheny River. Statcast put the distance on the HR at 484 Ft, tying the PNC Park Record with Sammy Sosa.

The Pirates will look to finsh off the next two games against the Reds, with one coming as the Facebook Game of the Week on Wedensday, as Gerrit Cole toes the slab for the Buccos in the series finale. Robert Stephenson will oppose him.

13 games later were 19-7 2.5 games up 9n the Yankees.

JD has been sensational through 26 games.
          105 AB 40 hits 9 HR 24 RBI .381 AVG

Xander has been the 2nd best so far followed by mookie. The rest of the team Is still contributing however. The only weak averages so far are Vazquez. Jackie. And Moreland. .205 .215 .234 respectively. However JBJ and Moreland have decent RBI 12 and 15. 3 and 4 HRs as well.

Pitching wise, Sale, E-Rod have been strong both under 1.50 ERA Porcello decent with Pomeranz and Evolodi both over 4 ERA.

Bullpen has been strong off of Barnes and Hembre. With the rest struggling, even Brad Hand who I acquired for David Price and some minor leaguers had been bad with over a 4 era through 8 innings.

7-3 in our last 10, same as the Yanks. With Tampa. KC and Texas next before the Yankee series we hope to gain some ground.

Jeez yeah, to miss the playoffs by one game is a killer.

Still, it's a massive effort with the reds rotation, they have some days where they give up four in the 1st and it' catch up all game long!

A surprise trade for the O's ... the unhappy Dallas Keuchel (wanted more money) with his 4.74 ERA (his ratings had dropped to 75) & minor league AAA Catcher Austin Wynns were traded for LHP Robbie Ray from the Diamondbacks.

                Rotation
                D. Bundy
                R. Ray
                S. Gray
                A. Cobb
                A. Cashner

                In his first start Ray pitched a gem with 7.0 innings with 3H 0R 0ER 10SO 96pitches

The O's batters jumped all over Twins starter Kyle Gibson with a 3 run first and a six run third to chase him from the game as the O's recorded a season high 13 hits and defeated the Twins 10-0

                Notable
                G. Bird 2-4 2HR 5RBIs .287 4HR 11RBIs on the year

Cubbies beat the Reds 2-1 today. Boy do I hate Billy Hamilton. We're up 1 in the 6th or 7th and he tries to bunt but misses with someone on first and third. The have got me with that stupid bunt so many times in the past so next pitch I throw it high as a I can expecting the squeeze and got an easy out at the plate.

Top of the 9th Hamilton hits a solo shot to tie the game at 1. Bottom of the 9th we get a guy to 3rd base with 2 outs. The game was won on a walk off passed ball 2-1.

Cardinals win their 6th in a row, so we are still down 2.5 games with 15 to go.

My sliders and settings have evolved all year but I think solid hits need to move up for both me and the computer. These 4/5 hit games every day are getting brutal.

We extended our winning streak to 4, and swept the Diamondbacks with a 7-3 win. Luke Weaver started his 2nd MLB game and won his 2nd MLB game. Matt Carpenter went 2 for 4 with a homerun, double and 4 RBI. Really hoping this is the turnaround we've been waiting for. He's hitting just .185 on the year.

We are off on Monday and will start a brief two game set with the Indians again. Wacha vs Bauer to start the series.

This game is such a rollercoaster. Just when I'm ready to start toying around with upping the difficulty, my bats go completely silent. Four game series vs the sub .500 Pirates and I win the first game 11-0. I'm offensively challenged, it's very rare I score more than 4 or 5 runs, then the next game my bats go silent and I lose 2-1 in 13 innings, next game I take a 2-0 lead in the second but end up blowing a 2-1 lead in the 7th and getting hammered 8-2. Now it's the last game of the series and I've got Bartolo Colon making his first start back with the Mets and I have no idea what to expect

It wasn't as heartbreaking as it sounds.
I was actually eliminated with about a week left in the season.
I won my last 7 games and the second wild card team lost their last 5.
So I was like 6 out with a week left.

Pitching with the Reds was just brutal.
Besides Castillo who was surprisingly great for me most of the year, and Kyle Hendricks.
The rest of my rotation was just bad. Harvey would pitch great every other game.

I usually never make trades but I traded Billy Hamilton and a high prospect for Kyle Hendricks. I couldn't believe it the Cubs offered the trade to me.

Gerrit Cole allowed 3x the amount of hits that Henry Owens did a few nights ago against the Reds.

The good news for Cole? Owens only have up 1 hit, Cole sprinkled 3 hits over 9 shutout innings, along with 16(!!!) strikeouts to lead the Pirates to a 6-0 win over the Reds Thursday Afternoon. Cole had his strikeout pitches working all afternoon, striking out the side twice, and notching 14 strikeouts over the first 6 innings of play. Needing 7 of the next 9 outs to come via the strikeout, Cole faltered, notching just two more over the next 3 innings, but kept the shutout intact.

On the offensive side of things, some seriously bad baserunning from the Pirates did not come back to haunt them. To start, Starling Marte got himself tagged out at 3rd in the 1st inning after he blew right through Joey Cora's stop sign on a Gregory Polanco double. The following inning saw Francisco Cervelli get tagged at home trying to advance on a single from hot-hitting Max Moroff. Moroff would end up going 4-for-5 on the day, further rubber-stamping himself into 2B while Josh Harrison takes over 3B for the injured Adonis Garcia. The Pirates would see Josh Bell get tagged out at home trying to advance later on in the game as well. The common denominator? Billy Hamilton. Hamilton's arm is the sole reason that this game stayed at a 2-0 split until the 7th inning. The Pirates used some well-timed hitting, and ended up notching another 17-hit offensive performance that saw once-struggling CF, Austin Meadows, flip his batting average over .270 for the first time this season.

With Thursday's win, the Pirates moved to just 1.5 games out of the NL Central leading Chicago Cubs, who had the day off for a travel day. The Pirates will move north of the boarder to Toronto for a 3-game weekend series that will finish up on Father's Day 2018 on Fox for the Sunday Game of the Day. The Bucs will see Marcus Stroman, Aaron Sanchez, and Joe Biagini this series, while they will trot out Jameson Taillon, Brett Anderson and Henry Owens.

Yep, been rolling Armors, AS, and QC. Play every other game. I have caught up to real regular season, 67 wins. Last 2 games played against Rockies, a 1-0 win and a 4-5 Loss. One game of pitching magic by both sides, and the other a HR driven game, with all runs scored off dingers. I have jo shot for NL East as Nationals have double digit lead. But in a 6 team race for a wildcard race, should be fun. Injury train keeps rolling through Toronto. Justin Smoak was mashing for me to a tune of .262/.338/.625, then promptly dislocated his ankle on a slide into 2nd base in a game where we were blowing out the Orioles. Out for 6+ months.

My DL currently looks like this:

                                10 day:
                                -Bo Bichette (AAA)
                                -Dalton Pompey (MLB)
                                -David Paulino (MLB) (1-2 Months)
                                -Aledmys Diaz (MLB, just activated)
                                -Hyun Jin Ryu (MLB)
                                -Ryan Tepera (MLB)

                                60 Day:
-JA Happ (Back by draft) (MLB)
                                -Danny Jansen (6+ Months) (MLB)
                                -Justin Smoak (6+ Months) (MLB)
                                -Two other AA players.

Vlad Jr., Randal Grichuk and Bryce Harper are carrying me offensively, while Stroman and Ryan Borucki are the only two guys in my rotation that have been consistently good. Lucky for me, I picked up Joe Mauer (Who the Twins resigned to a cheap deal in the offseason), who was released the day after the Smoak incident. A good-enough lefty bat to help fill out my lineup.

I've been playing every game, and am only about 50 in so far, so this has been ridiculous, but I'm enjoying the challenge of filling my roster out with depth players
