Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

We lost 2 out of 3 to the Padres. Our offense has been stagnant of late. Hopefully things will turn around quickly as we face the Reds for 3 in Cincinnati next.

Our lead is still 3 1/2 over the Cubs and Pirates. We will be getting Stephen Piscotty back after this weekend series, which will hopefully boost the offense.

Carpenter, Grichuk, Wisdom, and DeJong are all hitting below .240. They are the heart of our lineup
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Dodgers franchise. My team has just taken a big hit with two injuries. Pederson out for 1-6 days and Taylor out for 30-60 days. I put Taylor on the 60 day DL but kept Pederson active. Both happened in the same game as well.

I'm basically speechless at this point by how bad I've gotten without touching sliders. I went from 8.5 back in May to catching the Nationals before the All Star break and expanding my lead to 4.5 games and feeling like I was going to run away with the division. Now I followed up my series loss to Cincinnati by losing 2 of 3 to Miami and getting swept in a two game series by Baltimore and I'm now three games out of first, two in the loss column. I'm heading to Philly, which is a terrible matchup for me because I can't hit and their pitching staff is pitching really well, plus I have Bartolo Colon going in the first game and he has been ok at best. I'm eight days away from a showdown with first placed Washington for three games and I can't afford to lose any ground before then.

Has anyone noticed the cpu signing players for your team? I accidentally selected Auto for injury management, could it somehow be related to that?

          What. A. Game.

          Cardinals 98-61
          Cubs 98-61

Bottom 2nd - Soler hits a 2 run HR off Wacha. Cubs lead 2-0

Bottom 6th - Rizzo rbi single, Cubs up 3-0

Top 7th - Starter Juan Durham is pitching a gem. He has been rough since joining the Cubs after the All Star great. Durham has to leave the game with a hand injury in a **** out. The bullpen tightropes out of the 7th after 2 throwing errors and a walk. Cubs still up 3-0

Top 8th - McCutchen gets a RBI single off Stroup. Cubs up 3-1

Top 9th - Span homers off Coronado to make it 3-2. Bases loaded and Asunción RBI singles off Rex Brothers. We’re tied at 3 but Cubs get out off the inning.

Bottom 9th - Rizzo leads off and strikes out. AJ Pollack walks, Soler homers again. Cubs win Cubs Win 5-3

HR 18 and 19 for Soler today.

          Cards 3-9-1
          Cubs 5-6-2

Tightroped our way to seven wins in a row and a division lead.

Durham appears to be okay and won’t miss any time.

          Rockies officially clinch the WC.

Rays clinch a WC. Tigers are up 1 game over the White Sox for a WC.

Angles lead the Mariners by 1 game.

After a 14-0 blowout to wrap up a sweep of the Cardinals in St. Louis, the Dodgers took it to me at Wrigley. Long ball killed me in the first two games. Alex Wood killed me in the third. Had the lead late in the third game but was unable to hold it.

Just curious, what's the motivation for putting him on the 60 day?

In case you didn't know (I know it's too late now), the "days" on the DL list only represent the minimum time required to be on the list. A player can be on the 10 day as long as they need, as long as it was for at least 10 days. So they can be on it for 11 or for 59 or for 153.

They only benefit of putting them on the 60 day is it exempts them from counting towards your 40 man roster, along with the same exemption from the 25 man roster that the 10 day gives.

There is literally no reason to put a player on the 60 day unless you need the space on your 40 man. Sorry if you didn't know this (I found out the hard way as well).

I do it for the spot on the 40 man. Now that I'm in mid August and Sept call ups are right around the corner, I want to be able to maximize the number of guys I have available. If a guy is out for the season I'm going to put him on the 60 so I have an extra guy available for a call up. It can be a little risky though, if you are planning on having a lot of guys on your 40 man returning next year it could push you over the limit when everyone is healthy

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

Just had a ludicrous game Vs the Twins.

I was leading 3-2 in the 9th, and brought out my closer, Mychal Givens. He strikes the first batter out, then all hell broke loose.

On a foul ball up the shaft behind homeplate, Romine my catcher drops it (never seen that before).

Next pitch is a soft grounder to second and Villar just piledrives the throw exactly one mile above my 1B's head. Their batter takes second.

strike, ball, strike and then a regulation flyball to right where the very safe hands of adam jones are waiting ... he casually jogs to his left and totally whiffs on the ball. then in retrieving the ball Jones fires the ball closer to centre field than he does second base and the runner scores & batter advances to third.

Givens strikes out the next batter, and then Mauer comes in and dribbles one along the ground to third, and my 3B Nunez pulls my 1B off the bag and the twins win on the error.

2 runs scored, Givens gets the blown save, but his ERA is still 0.00.

just bizarre. 4 errors in one inning, and I think before that I hadn't had an error in roughly 16 games.

Orioles baseball is alive and well

I'm starting to get back on the right track with back to back wins over the Phillies. I got 5 1/3 innings of one run ball from Bartolo Colon and HRs from Adrian Gonzalez and Jay Bruce to lock up a 5-2 victory. I had deGrom on the mound for my next game and got six shutout innings from him, but he wasn't very economical with his pitches so I had to pull him after six. Then in the top of the 7th Jay Bruce of all people leads off with a triple. I pinch ran and snuck a base hit through the middle since the infield was in and held on to win 1-0. Familia has as many saves in the last two days as he had in the previous month. With a Washington loss to Miami I'm now two games back, one in the loss column

i needed a LH power bat in my lineup at 1B and swung a deal for Jay Bruce. I've been enjoying hitting with him.

2HR's and 5RBI's in his first 5 games. One HR was a walk off.

Well, I wanted to try and replicate the Pirates win streak they reeled off around the All Star Break this year, with my Pirates.

We got to 10 at least! Brings us within 2.0 of the Cubs. May make one more move to add starting pitching to solidify the rotation. I already miss Glasnow, but boy oh boy to I love having Nado in the lineup. Thanks Rockies!

Cardinals pushed their winning streak to 3 games after beating the Rockies in Colorado yesterday 5-4. Michael Wacha got the win for his 6th of the year. Paul DeJong remained hot as he drove in 3 runs a day after driving in 5 in the series finale in Cincinnati. Paul DeJong in his last two games is 6 for 8 with a HR, 8 RBI and 4 doubles. Not too shabby.

Tommy Pham extended his hitting streak to 10 games in his first at bat in Coors Field with a single up the middle. Randal Grichuk, Matt Carpenter, and Patrick Wisdom continue to struggle this year.

Next up is game 2 of the series with the Cardinals putting Carlos Martinez on the mound against Gerritt Cole.

                          BREAKING NEWS

The Cardinals made a huge trade for the day to be June 12th with the Yankees. With Stephen Piscotty coming off the DL and Tommy Pham's hot bat (hitting .382 with 5 HR and 15 RBI since his return to St.Louis), the thought was that Magnerius Sierra would be put on the bench as he continues to struggle with his bat and worse his OBP being a lead off hitter. Well...that isn't going to happen as the Cardinals sent Magnerius Sierra to the Yankees in exchange for Andrew Miller, as the Cardinals look for another left handed reliever out of the pen with Sam Freeman struggling this year with command and giving up the long ball.

                          Full trade details:

                          Yankees get:

CF Magnerius Sierra (2017 Rookie of the Year) 23 Years Old
                          RP Sam Freeman
2B Jacob Wilson (journey man..MLB ready..no home in St.Louis) Yankees need IF depth that is MLB ready

                          Cardinals get:

RP Andrew Miller (has this year and next year left on his contract)
SS Alexander Vargas (A Prospect 18 years old) Yankees loaded with prospects at SS

I feel really good about this trade. The thought is that Tommy Pham will take over leadoff duties as well as play center field with Piscotty returning. While Sierra still has tremendous upside, we also have Harrison Bader that is a similar player, although 2 years older, but is better defensively. Bader right now is locked into a team friendly contract whereas Sierra was making $4.8M this year and has 2 years of arbitration left where his price is most likely going to increase to the $5.5-$6M range. Bader still has 5 years of control left.

Sam Freeman has struggled this year and the Cardinals were most likely going to shop him at some point (he is under contract thru next year). Moving him now helps offset the $10.6M price tag of Andrew Miller.

Jacob Wilson is a journey man that just doesn't seem to have a fit at the MLB level at this time with us. With us getting Marwin Gonzalez and having Aledmys Diaz for his glove, plus guys like Elizer Alvarez, Edmundo Sosa, and Harrison Murdock on the cusp, Wilson ever being anything more than a minor league journey man with the Cardinals organization was highly unlikely.

With the addition of Andrew Miller, the Cardinals now, most likely, have the best bullpen in the majors.

                          Tyler Lyons
                          John Brebbia
                          Dean Kiekhefer
                          Roberto Osuna
                          Jordan Walden
                          Andrew Miller
                          Trevor Rosenthal

Also Alexander Vargas is an 18 year old SS with tremendous upside and already has a great glove and arm at the SS position. The wait for him will be for his bat to catch up. His path will be similar to that of Samuel Franco who is now in Springfield after the Cards waited for his bat to match his glove.

The Yankees have to feel good about this trade as well. With Magnerius Sierra joining the club, the thought is that he will take over for Elsbury who is in the final year of his contract. Expect the 2021 Yankees outfield to be LF Corey Ray, CF Magnerius Sierra, and RF Aaron Judge. Great starting point as the Yankees look to rebuild/reload as they are currently dead last in the AL East and 12 games under .500.

My timing is a mess right now, but when I started my franchise I was poking the ball to left field vs the shift with him pretty much at will, he was getting at least one double pretty much every game. Now I've gotten in the bad habit of pulling the ball with everyone and his average has dropped from over 300 to down in the 270s. When you factor in the he had a stint on the dl and I sit him a lot so that I can work Nimmo in to the lineup you could make the argument he is my most productive player

The last two years I've done a fantasy draft, Miller has been the rock of my bullpen. He's able to pitch multiple innings if you need him to and can certainly close games as well.

                              Nice trade.

                                Thanks DJ

I'm hoping he's a rock in our bullpen as well. I don't know if he'll be able to go multiple innings these days as his stamina rating is 19 in year 2020 of my franchise. I just needed someone who could help shut down rallies late in game.

The thought honestly is that I'll use him the remainder of the season and then trade him in the offseason. I am hell bent on getting to the World Series this year and another back end bullpen piece was needed in my opinion to make that happen.

I probably didn't need to make this trade, but with Freeman struggling and now viable left handed option in the minors, plus the continued log jam in the outfield, it was worth the chance and the parting of ways with Sierra.

Plus getting Alexander Vargas is HUGE for us as now we have a young talented SS prospect who we can develop slowly and efficiently since we have Paul DeJong at SS who is young, Edmundo Sosa who's on the cusp of the big leagues and Samuel Franco who is developing in Springfield.

Vargas will allow us to the ability to be flexible in the offseason with what we do with Aledmys Diaz.

I didn't want to part with Sierra, but we still have that big log jam in the outfield despite our moving of parts (Corey Ray & Jeremy Hazelbaker)

Our MLB level talent in the outfield remains:

                                Randal Grichuk
                                Tommy Pham
                                Stephen Piscotty
                                Harrison Bader
                                Oscar Mercado
                                Nick Martini
                                Juan Fabregas
                                Eddie Casilla

8 players for 5 spots, and that isn't including the likes of Randy Arozorena, Nick Plummer, and Scott Hurst who are damn close to being MLB level ready.

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(
