MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

Cubbies beat the Cards 6-4 today to clinch the division and top spot in the NL with 1 game to go.

It didn’t look good for the Cubs early. Lester was off today giving up 2 HRs, the Cubs were down 4-1 early. An odd moment with 1 out in the 6th, Rizzo hits a hard grounder up the middle directly into the shift which should be an easy out but the ball bounces off second base and Rizzo gets a hit which sets up a 3 run homer by Jeff Scruggs to tie the game.

Cubs take a 6-4 lead in the 7th and the Cubs hold to win. The pen ate up a lot of innings today. Coronado almost blew the save, the winning run was up in the top of the 9th with 2 out but we turned it over to Neil Ramirez to pick up the final out.

One game left and Rizzo hasn’t homered in about a week, still sitting at 69 HRs. I’m leaning toward simming the last game of the season since we have our playoff position locked.

I've started a franchise with the Pirates, using Cycloniac's TrueSim Roster & Mike Lowe's Sliders on HoF difficulty for pitching (meter) & hitting (directional9

The Pirates swept the Tigers at the Opening Week and the last match of the series was one of those which remains me why I love this game.

Mike Fiers on the mound for the Tigers vs Chad Kuhl for the Pirates. We were down 2-0 at the start of the 8th inning with only 2 hits. We couldn't hit a damn thing. Every hit went right to the infielders or were weak groundballs/flyball.

But we managed to score 7 runs in 2 innings. 3 runs in the 8th & 4 runs in the 9th for a total of 8 hits to win the match 7-2. I felt like I won the World Series.

This game is just awesome to play.

The Orioles swung a trade too. After losing 4 from the last 5, the O's are out of a wildcard spot by .5 of a game, but just last week were 2 games clear and only 2.5 games behind the Sox for top spot in the division (now we're 5 games back).

With a dearth of left hand bats in the lineup and the fact they've given up infield runs (to SS) or made infield errors in 5 of the last 6 games we went about trying to rectify that.

We set our sights on the A+ rated left hand bat – SS from Philly, JP Crawford.

With Austin Romine locking down the catcher's spot and with a 19yr-old A rated prospect in the minors, Chance Sisco became available. He calls a truly terrible game, and his bat isn't lively enough to warrant a DH spot.

        Philadelphia
        C – Chance Sisco (74) A rated
SP – Hunter Hervey (69) A Rated RHP AAA
RF – John Andreoli (73) B Rated OF

        Baltimore
        SS – J.P Crawford (75) A+ Prospect

This means the O's now have a little flexibility in the IF, where Crawford can slot into any position, or he can be the everyday starter at SS while Beckham moves to 3B or DH. Plus we have our SS position locked up for the next decade.

In J.P's first game starting at SS he made a play to his right deep in the hole on a hard liner, scooped the ball, transferred the ball and spun all in one motion and threw out the runner; Kepler (who's not slow) at first.

The kind of play Beckham could never, ever make, and would probably have overthrown first if he tried.

It occurred to me just how many IF singles I'd been giving up, compared to how many I was getting ... and I just had to put a stop to it. I may have overpaid a little, Hervey and Sisco will no doubt turn into studs. But JP will too, so I can live with that.

With the A+ rated Kingery waiting in the wings, Philly has lots of depth at SS and I'm guessing they're pretty happy with their haul of young talent.

Back and forth on sweeps lately. First I sweep the Cardinals, then I lose three straight to the Dodgers. Now I take four in a row against the Reds. Off to Los Angeles for (hopefully) some revenge. We shall see. The Dodgers lineup is much more formidable than the Reds.

We lost the series to the Rockies 2-1, as we were dominated in game 2 by Gerritt Cole who went 8 strong allowing 1 run, 3 hits, and striking out 10. In game 3 our bats were better (10 hits) but again we couldn't drive anyone in (1 run on the day). But even with that, Lance Lynn pitched 6 shutout innings. Roberto Osuna pitched a scoreless 7th. Andrew Miller is his Cardinal debut pitched a scoreless 8th striking out the side on 11 pitches. Trevor Rosenthal blew the save in the 9th with 2 outs when Bobby Bradley launched a homerun to right to tie the game at 1. Tyler Lyons lost the game in the 11th when he gave up a bases loaded single to Ryan McMahon for the walkoff victory.

Thankfully our lead is still 4 1/2 over the Cubs as no one else in the NL Central is winning.

            BREAKING NEWS

The Tigers and Marlins struck a big trade deal in June with the Tigers getting Madison Bumgarner from the Marlins in exchange for Sean Doolittle and Nick Castellanos.

While the Marlins are just 4 games out of first in a very weak NL East, they are currently 8 games under .500. The Tigers are just a game over .500 themselves, but only trail the White Sox by 2 games in a struggling AL Central.

J.P Crawford had an immediate impact in his Os debut.

In the second inning he made that unbelievable throw in mid air to throw out Kepler. His first at bat was a strikeout, then a weak infield pop up to second.

In a see-sawing game with 4 lead changes, JP came to the plate in the 7th inning with 2-out and the O's down 5-4 but with Mancini on 1st after a 2-out walk, Crawford lined a hard ball into the gap at deep right for a stand up triple and tied the game.

Then in the 8th inning he doubled into the same gap again with 2 runners scoring to give the O's an 8-5 lead.

Givens came in and issued a walk and gave up a hit before striking out the next three batters for a much needed Orioles win.

After getting out to a 2-0 series lead against Philly I ended up dropping the next two and splitting it 2-2, I've scored one run in my last three games and I'm facing Bumgarner next as I open a series vs Bumgarner so I'm not counting on breaking out of my offensive slump quite yet. After SF I have three vs Washington and it's starting to feel like if I don't take at least 2 of 3 my chances of winning the division will be gone. The way it's lining up, deGrom and Syndergaard are both going to miss the Washington series and I'm going to face Scherzer on the last game. I'm seriously considering pitching deGrom on short rest against Scherzer

8 straight walks on "fast forward"

9 runs on 3 hits this game. Kind of crazy.

Heh at least you didn't pull off what I did in a game...draw 10 walks with 6 hits and score 2 runs

Just scored my most amount of runs in a game, 14 on 15 hits.

Orioles 14 def Red Sox 4.

We jumped all over Rodriguez and chased him after 3 innings, then got to pomeranz for a seven run seventh inning. And this was coming after Boston held me to a 2 hit shutout last game.

Been awhile since I have updated this but the 2019 Red Sox have a 67-29 record going in to the All-Star Break, 13 games up on Toronto.

We have made a few moves since I last updated. We traded Mitch Moreland to the Royals for a Minor league prospect.

In corresponding move we had called up Tyler Colvin, who was signed in the offseason for depth, but has then taken over in right field for the struggling Jackie Bradley Jr... Colvin is batting just under .300 at the break. While JBJ is struggling with a .197 avg.

We also traded couple minor league prospects to the Cubs for catcher Victor Caratini, who has been platooning at catcher for the Red Sox with Blake Swihart. Caratini probably will get more AB's after the break since he is hitting .303 at the break and Swihart is struggling with a .242 avg.

Drew Pomeranz suffered a fractured shin on a hard liner up the middle on June 21 so we called up top pitching prospect Jay Groome to take his spot in the rotation. In 4 starts Groome is 2-1 with 2.92 ERA and 24 K's.

Rafael Devers is having a break out season at the plate hitting an AL leading .355, while clubbing 11 Homers and a team leading 60 RBI's.

Chris Sale leads all of baseball with 15 wins, a 1.73 ERA, and 159 K's going into the break.

I just won what felt like a playoff game vs SF. Washington was off so I had a chance to make up half of a game in a Wheeler vs Bumgarner duel. I'm normally a hacker making tons of first pitch outs, but for whatever reason I become super focused against top tier pitchers and play so much better, it's happened vs Kershaw and Scherzer and tonight was no different, plus the ump had a pretty tight zone tonight. I managed to scrape runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings on a ground out and sac fly and Wheeler was cruising for four innings but then the strike zone seemed to shrink in the 5th and he had a meltdown, allowing four runs. I decide to pinch hit for him in the bottom of the 5th and the move pays off as Wilmer Flores comes through with a pinch hit HR to make it 4-3. I ran Bumgarner's pitch count up high enough to chase him out after six innings, then in the 7th I get a two out hit from Amed Rosario. I'd normally try and steal in this situation but I decide not to and Todd Frazier makes my decision pay off as he comes through with a two run HR to make it 5-4 which ended up being the final score
