Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread
Walk-off Grand Slam by Cespedes. Mets were down 8-3 to the Brewers, but battled back to get within 8-6 heading into the 9th, setting the stage for the late-game dramatics. Cespedes has been in a big slump to start the 2019 season, and was dropped in the lineup before this game. Could very well be the moment he catches fire.

Contreras down for me for 1-2 months, Cardinals have beat me in the first two games after the All-Star break, I’m fearing a rough second half... but soon I pick up Cole Hamels and then Daniel Murphy, so we’ll see...

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread
The Reds sweep the Nationals 3-0 in the opening series of the season.
GAME 2
After a 1-0 shutout in game one K. Gausman took the mound against S. Strasburg.
A RBI double from Beckham in 4th to go along with his 2nd inning solo shot was the only offense in the game; when in the 5th the CPU surprisingly pinch hit for Strasburg (who tbf, was dominating me with 8 SO's in 4 innings of work).
With Taylor on first; Howie Kendrick took the first two pitches. I noticed Taylor was getting a bigger and bigger lead at first. I fired a ball into first and get my first pickoff in the Show 18.
So the CPU rolled the dice and pinch hit for strasburg, then get picked off at first and end the inning without Kendrick even getting a shot to hit. lol
I shelled their reliever for 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th to take a 6-0 lead which I had until the 9th ... when the Nats bats woke up and drew it to 6-4 before I brought out my closer and ended the game.
Game 3
Luis Castillo Vs Gio Gonzalez
Another low scoring game where the Reds won 3-2 with pitching and defense.
The Nats got plenty of hits in this game and stretched me to my limit, they just left so many men on base as Castillo constantly worked his way out of trouble. In the 6th, after walking Harper (and his final inning with exactly 100 pitches) he worked his way out of a bases loaded jam with only one out.
He struck out Zimmeran and then got Rendon to fly out to deep centre. If not for the wind, i think it would have been a grand slam.
Now we host the Cubs for a two game series in what should be more pitching and defense.Comment

Nice! I bet that was exciting. Poor ole Cespedes has spent 2022 in the FA market in my franchise and he is 84 ovr surely, he could have made some team's outfield better. I would have signed him if I had the need but my outfield is stacked.

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread
I'm starting to get back on track, beating up on some sub .500 teams. I took 2 of three from the Phillies and have won the first two of a four game set vs Miami before heading to Boston. Signing two designated pinch runners to use with the expanded rosters is already paying off as they've scored runs in two consecutive games. I decided not to use one in the game I lost vs Philly and it came back to bite me as the guy I left in got thrown out on a close play at home trying to score from second and I ended up losing 1-0. It's definitely going to cause me to make adding team speed in the off season a priority.Comment

Marlins Start 2029 With Combined No-Hitter
If Mario Morales was trying to prove he belongs as staff ace, seven and two-thirds no-hit innings with 11 strikeouts is a good way to start.
"You don't beat a guy like Sharpe easily. I know I had to be at my best and fortunately I was able to execute and my team had my back the whole way, " Morales commented.
The Marlins got a couple runs off Sharpe...and then that's it. Two in the first...nothing but zeroes after.
Morales was up to the task. He used all five pitches and showed very solid command both in and out of the zone. The change-up was especially effective, having good late fade and and rarely getting above the knees when it crossed the plate.
He wore down in the 8th and left with two out in the inning. Gauthier came in to record the final out and Delgado worked the 9th to secure the team no-hitter.
"Sheez, way to be a tryhard, Mario, " Boeve laughed, "Talk about a tough act to follow. I give up 1 run and I'll probably get booed off the mound. Thanks for making life difficult for the rest your rotation mates."
The other party that has to be overjoyed at this is Page and his new hires. If there was any sure way to make the younger pitchers buy-in to the new program, a no-hitter makes a pretty strong selling point.
Also in the game, Duncan Ailes and Aaron Blair picked up their first hits as major leaguers. Shinjo went 0-for-3 with a walk.
But the day belong to Morales. What a great way to start the new campaign, in front of the home fans no less!

2022 ALDS GAME ONE
Chicago White Sox
VS.
New York Yankees
Final Score:
Yankees-3
White Sox-2
Masterful Performance By Severino Saved In Extras
Luis Severino pitched a gem of a game in the first game of the ALDS between the Yankees and White Sox (8.1 IP/5 HITS/1 ER/6 SO). His performance was almost all for not as after allowing a one out double to Yoan Moncada in the bottom of the ninth, Aroldis Chapman was brought in to close the game. On his first pitch, Rhys Hoskins knocked a 100 mph heater over the fence in straight away center to tie the game 2-2.
The joy from forcing extras would quickly fade for the White Sox as in the top of the ninth, Greg Bird would shoot a ball into left field, effectively beating the shifted defense for a two out double. The next batter, Gleyber Torres would narrowly miss a homerun as he knocked a ball off the right field wall bringing in Bird for the go ahead run. Afterward, the White Sox would go down in order in the bottom of the tenth and take the heart breaking loss at home.
The White Sox are left with the thought of what if. Lucas Giolito was pitching a gem of his own (5.0 IP/2 HITS/1 WALK/7 SO) when he was forced from the game after feeling tightness in his elbow after throwing a fastball for a strike to the second batter he faced in top of the 6th. Martin Perez came in with just his eight warm up pitches. A couple of batters later and the bases were loaded. Ketel Marte took advantage of this when he hit a ball into the corner in left field driving in two.
The White Sox will look to rebound in game two before travelling to New York where at the very least they will have to win one game.
New York Yankees lead series 1-0

2022 ALDS GAME 2
Chicago White Sox
VS.
New York Yankees
Final Score:
Yankees-7
White Sox-3
Yankees take 2-0 lead back to New York
The Yankees shelled Reynaldo Lopez to the tune of 6 earned runs to tske the victory in game two of the ALDS. The loss brings the White Sox ever closer to a third straight trip to the playoffs where they have failed to get past the first round (2019 wc loss and 2020 ALDS loss).
The game started on a positive note when Yoan Moncada and Rhys Hoskins went back to back in the bottom of the first. But three runs in the top of the second for the Yankees would erase the White Sox only lead of the evening. Another home run by Hoskins in the bottom of the third would again be erased by the resilient Yankees in the top of the fourth. After this, the Sox appeared deflated as the Yankees continued to add on runs while the White Sox offense failed to cross the plate again.
The White Sox are now faced with a very difficult task of winning three in a row to include two in Yankee stadium if they wish to save their season.
Yankees lead series 2-0
OTHER RESULTS
ALDS GAME TWO
Houston Astros-8
LA Angels-4
Series tied 1-1

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread
We took 2 out of 3 from the Padres and our lead over the Cubs remains 8 games. However, we took yet another hit as Dioner Navarro landed on the 10 Day DL with an elbow injury. Francisco Pena was recalled from Memphis to take his spot. Chris Chinea moved from Springfield to Memphis and Devon Snow was promoted from Palm Beach to Springfield.
The Cardinals now return home for a 10 game home stand to close out the first half of the season.
ROSTER NEWS
Patrick Wisdom was activated from the 10 Day DL and as expected was optioned to Memphis in hopes that he can get his swing back. Wisdom is hitting just .202 on the year and has struggled terribly at the plate this season. In an odd schedule the AAA All-Star game is played a week before the MLB All Star game. The idea is to have Wisdom play in Memphis until at least the AAA all star game and then possibly be recalled to St.Louis.
Randal Grichuk has been swinging a hot bat in Memphis to the tune of a .345 avg. His HR total is still low, just 1 in Memphis and two in St.Louis, but the Cardinals are more concerned with his hitting for average vs the power numbers.
Harrison Bader has struggled at the plate in Memphis since coming off the DL due to a broken leg. The hope was that Bader would get adjusted fairly quickly and return to the majors after the all star break, but it seems that Bader may be left down a bit longer. With Tommy Pham still playing well, Oscar Mercado being serviceable, and Randal Grichuk about to be recalled, the Cardinals can afford to ease Bader back from his gruesome injury.
Luke Weaver who was recalled when Carlos Martinez went on the 10 Day DL due to a strained finger, pitched his best game as a major leaguer yesterday going 7 innings, allowing 1 run, on 4 hits. He struck out 8 while issuing just 2 walks. The Cardinals who are finding their starting pitching to become deeper and deeper, may have to decide sooner or later what to do with the rotation. With the likes of Alex Reyes, Luke Weaver, and Kyle Funkhouser ready for the Show, the Cardinals may look to move someone like Miles Mikolas at the deadline, just to free up a spot in the rotation and then revisit this area in the offseason. The Cardinals could also just hang on to their staff for the 2nd half run just in case the injury bug strikes, which has been the norm this season it seems.
The Cardinals continue to evaluate their roster and what possibly may be needed to make yet another postseason trip (they have gone to 4 straight post seasons) and make a run to the fall classic. Everything seems to be set with pitching being strong and deep, and the lineup balanced, its hard to determine what would actually be needed as the Cardinals seem set and have the best record in the National League.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.
I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Blue Jays 2020 Spring Training Update
The Blue Jays are tearing it up in spring of 2020, seemingly not loosing a beat from their 2019 World Series win despite major losses in the off-season. Many prospects look ready to fill the gap, and in no area is that more obvious than pitching. The rotation especially looks good, despite the loss of Julio Teheran to the Orioles. Tanaka is pitching as sharply as he ever has. Adam McMullan has been looking even better than his 2019 rookie of the year season. Jose Lozano has also seemingly improved, perhaps the most out of the young pitchers, and looks ready to earn himself the ace spot for 2021. Either way, Lozano and McMullan look to make a fantastic 1-2 punch in the rotation for years to come.
Position battle updates
5th Starter - As projected, Fireballing lefty Ron Gilmore has been the clear and dominant choice to man this position. Control and Stamina remain issues, but he'll have enough in the tank to make a quality start most nights. His 4SFB/CH combo alone is enough to consider him, but his slider, 12-6 curve, and 2SFB have all developed nicely into this year. His slider is also fast enough to be thrown like a cutter.
LRP - There are several good options, but so far well rounded Fernando Chavez leads the pack. He's looking much sharper than seasons past, and if he keeps it up he will function well as both a LRP and a spot starter when needed.
LRP/MRP - a couple of mid-relief prospects dominate the discussion here. After his fall from grace (and the subsequent rise of Fernando Elez) last season, Roger Abercrombie is looking like he's back to the form he had during his rookie season. Jose Franco is in hot pursuit though, and may end up being the more attractive option as the Jays bullpen already has two fireballing lefties in the forms of Darrell Drese and Gary Moore, not to mention the lefty control specialist that is Elez, to compete with Abercrombie.
3B - This has been more of a challenge for the Jays as they face a conundrum. Tommy Rieldling, the favourite to start at 3rd, has been a fantastic defender, providing the type of defense that ties the defensive greats. However his bat has been a complete disaster at the plate. Meanwhile Willy Almanzar has been a good combination of average and power type hitting at the plate, but his defense has been mediocre. Perhaps it's time to make this more than a two horse race. SS prospect Daniel Franco can also play third, and has been performing well in spring. Catcher Kurt Williams can also play third and is facing much stiffer competition at the catching position. Utility man Derrick Simon could also man third, and while his bat lacks the same attractiveness as some of the other options, his defense is good and his speed is top tier.
The only issue I have with opening up the race is that none of these options can provide the same level of defense that Riedling can.Comment

Cespedes does it AGAIN! For the second straight game, Cespedes walks it off as the Mets topped the Brewers 4-3.
He hit a towering HR earlier in the game, too, so give him 3 HR's in the last 2 games. His bat looks like it's finally woken up.Currently Playing:

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread
2-4 to start the second half. Bats were red-hot the last week before the All-Star break now I’m lucky to scratch across 5 hits in a game.
Schwarber, Bryant and Rizzo continue to be my only consistent hitters. I don’t have the numbers in front of me but they’re close to the following:
Schwarber is just over .300
Bryant is right around .290
Rizzo is right at .280
Then the cliff...
Baez continues to struggle hitting under .220. Heyward is under .230 and so is Russell and Zobrist.
