Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

We lost the first 2 of the series against the Dodgers. We lost 3-1 in the series opener in a game where the Dodgers were the better team. Last game though, we controlled the game and had a 3 run lead in the 9th only to watch the bullpen blow up and lose the game, including Trevor Rosenthal walking in the winning run.

And to make matters worse, in the series opener, Matt Carpenter was drilled by a pitch from Matt Harvey and left the game. Thankfully its just a bruised arm and will not play the rest of the series (didn't play game 2 and I won't have him play game 3). But in game 2, Dioner Navarro reached down to make a tag in the 7th and then was removed due to shoulder injury. He is on the 10 Day DL and Francisco Pena was recalled from Memphis to take his place.

Trying to salvage a game and avoid the sweep in the series finale. Luke Weaver is on the mound for us, so this could get ugly, especially with our bullpen a bit gassed. We may just have to take solace in the fact that we are up 6 on the Cubs, so a loss and a win by them, makes it a 5 game lead and we can re-group in Arizona.

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

2 weeks into the 2019 season the Yankees find themselves off to a slow start as they attempt to defend their title and go back to back. At April 15 we have a record of 7-8. Disappointing but it's so early that we only trail 10-6 Boston by 2.5 games for first place.

Our pitching hasn't really been there so far. We have only held an opposing team to 3 or less runs twice so far. To open the season we lost 2 of 3 to Baltimore, split a 2 game set with Boston, lost 2 of 3 to Baltimore. Things seemed to be looking up as we took 2 of 3 from the Twins and headed back to NY for a few series.

Then we somehow lost 2 of 3 to the cross town rival Mets, without even facing DeGrom or Syndergaard. That's just unacceptable.

Still early but we are going to have to get it together. Maybe with the addition of Harper it's just taking some time for the team to gel.

Harper is off to a hot start in Pinstripes hitting 321 with 5 HR's and 13 RBI's. Drury is starting off well hitting 354 with 11 RBI's. Jose Abreu and Judge are icy cold to start the year. Abreu is hitting 203 with 3 HR's and 7 RBI's. Judge is hitting 217 with 5 HR's and 12 RBI's.

The loss in the series finale to the Mets was extra painful. 2 dominant games from Gsellman and Cole Hamels (NYY). Gsellman went 6 strong innings holding the Yankees to one Stanton solo shot. Hamels threw a gem as well going 7 innings allowing just 1 run, a Cespedes solo shot. In the 8th the Mets scored a run making it 2-1 Mets. After we failed to respond the Mets scored another run in the top of the 9th as Zach Britton walked in a run. 3-1 Mets headed to the bottom of the 9th.

Late game heroics saved the Yankees for now as Nelson Cruz blasted a huge game tying 2 run HR to send it to extras. Only for Chapman to quickly give the Mets back the lead allowing a Cespedes solo HR, his second of the game. Mets held on that time as AJ Ramos shut us down.

To make things worse, Britton is exhausted and Betances was forced out of that game after being hit with a comebacker. Luckily he won't miss any time. Very poor game.

Notes from around the MLB: Cubs off to hot start at 13-3 as they attempt to get back to the WS and avenge their loss to the NYY.

Philly taking the NL East by storm early at 11-4.

Nationals starting slow after losing Harper at 7-8. Already behind 4 games in second place.

BREAKING: Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw out for season with torn labrum. Devastating blow.

Former Yankees prospect, SP Chance Adams made the Orioles rotation out of ST in the 5 spot, has been rocked in his first 3 MLB starts. 12.78 ERA. Cashman is looking like a genius once again.

Dsng Abreu, Harper, and Cruz added to an already stacked team. Your slow start is surprising for sure. Howd you get Abreu? I imagine a trade but in sure you had to give up a lot for the White Sox to trade him. Or was he a free agent after 2018? I'm well past 2019 in my CHW franchise so i can't remember when I resigned him.

I did however trade him st the start of this season (2023) as I was losing money and he was making over 12 mil in the last year of his new contract. Sadly he is wasting away his final years in triple A for I believe the Reds.

Abreu was a trade, forget exactly I gave up. Harper and Cruz were from FA. Didn't even mean to get Cruz, saw him sitting in FA late in the offseason with no offers. CPU just didn't want him.

Might seem like poor CPU management at first but I can kind of see it and justify it. His fielding is terrible and he's very slow, elimates the entire national league. An AL team would have to be willing to give up a roster spot to a player that can barely play defense and would lose flexibility with the DH spot having to play Cruz there most of the time.

The 2019 Red Sox are in the first week of August...49 games above .500 with 79-30 Record, 18.5 games up on Toronto in the AL East.

Really haven't played much of the franchise lately. Actually has been almost a month since I have even played a game since I'm not really being challenged enough even though I am pitching on legend, with Armor and Swords sliders.

So in order to hopefully challenge me some more I have started another Franchise with the Chicago White Sox with same settings, for now.

The White Sox have started the 2018 season with a 5-4 Win at Kansas City. With James Shields getting the win, going 6 and a third giving up 4 earned. Bottom of the order led the offense with Avisail Garcia picking up 2 RBI's and Welington Castillo with 2 Run Homer off of Kansas City Starter Danny Duffy, who went 4+ giving up 5 Runs, 4 earned picking up the loss. Nate Jones picked up the save for the Sox.

                  Spoiler

The short 2 game opening series for the 2019 Rays ended with a split with the stacked Yankees.

In game one, reigning Cy Young winner Chris Archer felt the strain of the early season innings and was forced to leave after just 3.2 innings with a strained forearm. Luckily this didn't result in a trip to the DL. Erasmo Ramirez came in and escaped a bases loaded jam, finishing with 4ks in 2.2in, giving up 1ER.
Kendrys Morales was the star of the show, belting 2 HRs in the opening game, both solo shots, and finishing 3 for 4. Although the Yankees made a brief noise, the game finished 4-3 to the Rays with Edwin Diaz picking up his first save.

In game two the Rays bats struggled with their only run coming via a Sac Fly from Willy Adames, who drove in Jake Bauers who tripled off the centre field wall. Rays starter Jose De Leon struggled showed moments of brilliance, striking out 6 over 6.2inn but couldn't keep the big Yankee bats quiet with Judge belting a 2 run HR to LF and Corey Dickerson doing the same, just clearing the RF wall. Champman comfortably closed out the first win for the Yanks.

Yea, Cruz is a solid addition. Middle of the order bat if you have a DH spot. I traded Morales to the Twins for Santana. Both on similar contacts, both had = WAR last season in my franchise.

Saw Cruz was a FA and wanted a middle of the order threat to play with my young players. Grabbed him on a one year deal and so far he has not disappointed. Just finishing the first month of the season and he has 7 HR already and has been clutch.

Just called up Vlad Jr to hit in front of him so this should be fun!

Cardinals avoided the sweep with a 1-0 victory over the Dodgers in the series finale. Aledmys Diaz was the hero with a double in the 8th that led to a Harrison Bader base hit that drove in the go ahead/game winning run. Roberto Osuna pitched a perfect 8th, and Sam Freeman and Jordan Walden combined to close out the 9th with Walden getting his 3rd save of the year.

Luke Weaver was stellar going 6 1/3 innings, throwing shutout baseball and only giving up 4 hits to the 3rd best hitting team in the majors. He didn't get the win as our offense was stagnant, but a hell of a pitching performance.

Next up is a trip to Arizona where we will play 4 against the Diamondbacks. Then after an off day Monday, we will take a quick 2 day trip to Chicago to face the AL Central leading ChiSox.

In a stark contrast to the previous two games that were low scoring pitching duels, Atlanta finished a sweep of the Mets in a 12-6 offensive explosion. The Braves leapt out to a quick 6-0 lead after 3 innings, which chased Mets' SP Steven Matz. New York would quickly counter in the 4th and 5th with homers from Neil Walker and J.D. Martinez to tie the game at 6-6. Things would remain tied until the 7th, where Matt Adams launched a 3 run bomb 433 feet to center field. Atlanta tacked on a few more late inning runs, and was able to get out of a bases loaded jam in the 8th courtesy of a 1-2-3 double play.

Atlanta will face the Cubs in the NLCS. The Braves' 2018 season was ended by a Corey Seager Game 7 walk off home run in Los Angeles in last year's NLCS.

In the ALCS, Minnesota and Cleveland will battle for the chance to represent their league in the World Series.

First two games of the world series have kept me on the edge of my seat. Game 1 was a deGrom vs Severino matchup and just like in real life, deGrom was brilliant but we squandered his performance. I was pretty comfortable against Severino until he went in the stretch and then his delivery got real funky and I couldn't pick the ball up. I'd get someone on base nearly every inning and then fail to get him in but at least we were running up his pitch count. Finally in the 6th inning I got a little more comfortable with his delivery and Cespedes hit a hanging slider for a two run HR to give us a 2-0 lead. deGrom brought a no hitter in to the 7th but Hosmer broke it up on an infield single that I thought should have been an out but Rosario took his time making the throw to first. Two batters later Stanton comes up with men on 1st and 2nd and hits a double but fortunately I was able to get the ball in quick enough to only allow one to score. 2nd and 3rd with one out and deGrom does a Houdini act and gets out of the jam with the core 2-1. Then in the 8th Trevor Rosenthal has a meltdown and allows two to score and the Yankees go on to win 3-2

Game two I've got Wheeler vs Sonny Gray and Wheeler was outstanding, striking out Judge and Stanton a total of six times. He allowed one run in seven innings and I was able to get a little rally going in the 5th. 2nd and 3rd with no outs and I get a Nimmo sacrifice fly to score a run and Frazier advances from 2nd to 3rd so I have a chance to take the lead with a productive out but Wilmer Flores can't come though. Then with two outs Travis d'Arnaud picks him up with a single and we take the 2-1 lead. After last game's 8th inning implosion I bring in Familia for a 6 out save. He allowed base runners in both innings but was able to work around it and even the series at one. My middle relief has been very hit or miss so I think it's going to be six out saves for the next few games. If I can last until game six I'll have Matz available in the pen and then deGrom in the pen for game seven

Playoffs in this game are so intense. The only sports games I've gone deep in to franchise modes have been Madden and before than NCAA football where I can get through a season in less than two weeks. I've been at this for about four months so the thought of coming this close to a World Series and losing and having to start over is a real punch in the gut

After my loss to LA in last year's NLCS on a walk off 10th inning game 7 home run, I can say the feeling you get after a loss of that magnitude is more painful than a gut punch. More like watching someone kick your dog, steal your girl, punch you in the d***, and burn your house down... MLBTS is seriously bad for your health...

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

Things are going from bad to worse for the Yankees in the first month of the 2019 season. After losing 2 out of 3 to the Mets we have now been swept by the Seattle Mariners in 3 games in Machado's return to Yankee Stadium. Last time he was on that field he was celebrating a championship and G7 WS victory with Yankee teammates, now he returned in a Mariners uniform. Satisfying result for him after New York went chasing after Harper instead, letting him walk. Sitting in last place 4 games out of first. Record is 7-11.

3 of our last 4 games have been lost in extra innings. Lost the first 2 to Seattle by the same score, 5-6. Lost the finale 10-5.

Not even sure what to do. It might seem like I changed the settings to make it more difficult after last season, but nope. Still the same. That makes it stranger.

Luckily there is a prime opportunity to right the ship now. A day off after the brutal stretch vs the Mets and Mariners as the lowly 5-12 Royals come to town to end the home stand in NY. After that we have another day off to rest up again as we head out on a road trip to Toronto.

If things go how they should we should be headed to Toronto on a high note having dominantly swept the Royals out of the Bronx. A day off before and after the series gives us the luxury of pretty much being able to go all out to win without really worrying about resting guys.

If things go south and we end up getting killed by the Royals somehow change will likely be coming. Of course it's still too early to hit the panic button and there isn't room to do much anyway. Maybe a new look lineup? Calling a player or two up? Who would go down? Of course the goal is for that not to be answered.

Almost through the first month of year two. The Blue Jays sit 13-6, which is good for 0.5 GB of NYY for first in the AL East. It’s been a month of hard fought wins and good pitching. Haven’t lost a series yet, but I have played the Rays and Orioles twice. Although I do have series wins against Boston and the Cubbies at Wrigley. Plus, I am on the verge of a sweep of NYY at home, which would put me 0.5 games up on the Yankees.

Pitching has been the strong point. Stroman and Morton have been lights out at the top of the rotation. Sanchez has been quality and Borucki / Santana have been serviceable at the back end.

The only struggling reliever was Biagini who was hit hard to start the season and was sent to AAA to work it out. David Paulino was called up to replace him and has looked strong so far, not allowed a run so far in three appearances. Tepera, Madson, Barnes and Solis have been automatic to hold leads to Giles who is 7/7 in save opportunities and has allowed only one earned run. Montgomery was off to a hot start and was eating some quality innings out of the pen until he went down for 2-3 months with a shoulder dislocation. I claimed Daniel Hudson off waivers from the Reds who has only played in one game so far but will provide depth in the pen.

The bats have been good for the most part. Nelson Cruz is an absolute monster, hitting .357 so far with 10 homers already. He had back to back 2-HR games and hit 5 in three games in a series against the Rays.

Grichuk has also been hot with 7 homers already. Drury has been hitting over .300 and has been a great lead off hitter. Rowdy Tellez has had a great start in his first full season hitting .353 in mostly a platoon situation with a ton of extra-base hits.

Teoscar Hernandez started slow, but has been on a year lately with 6 homers already. Pillar is hitting for a nice average, Solarte has cooled down, but is hitting generally well and Asdrubal Cabrera has been consistent in the two-hole.

Russell Martin is struggling bad. Hitting .087 with one homer. Jansen wasn’t hitting much better, but has since caught on a little and has bumped his average to .217. I’ll continue to roll with Jansen most days, with Martin backing him up and playing around the infield. Reese McGuire could be up soon if Jansen struggles again.

Tulo was injured in ST for the first two months of the season so Gurriel Jr was given the starting nod. He struggled batting .207 early and then went on the 10-day DL. Diaz has been solid hitting over .300 to start the year so I kept him up and sent Gurriel down to AAA to work on his swing. However, Cabrera just left the game after a swinging strike, so Gurriel could get another chance to start if he misses time.

Finally, I called up Vald Guerrero Jr. after hitting ,387 with 4 homers in his first 10 games in AAA. His bat belongs in the show. He will take over at 3B. I give players plenty of rest to rotate in my bench as a lot of players are deserving of playing time. Here is my starting lineup (Assuming Cabrera will hit the DL. Otherwise, Cabrera bats 2nd and plays 2B, Grichuk moves to 5th in the order):

                                RF Drury
                                CF Grichuk
                                3B Guerrero Jr
                                DH Cruz
                                1B Tellez
                                LF Hernandez
                                SS Diaz
                                2B Gurriel Jr
                                C Jansen

Bench: Pillar, Solarte, Martin, Jonathan Davis.

Looking forward to seeing what May brings. Hope it’s much as the same as April, but either way it’s looking to be an exciting year.

PS: Vlad Jr is 0/5 in two games with a walk, 2-K’s and grounded into a double play. I won’t hit the panic button just yet though
