Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

Not 18 but my carryover from 14 MLB 17 2018 world series champs are the Jays. Beat the Brew Crew in 7 on the road; came in as the top wild card team in the AL. Need to run through the individual games to crown MY official WS MVP; game gave it to Jesus Montero, who did hit 400 but with only 2 RBI...he still may get the award.

Interesting off season coming up. what to do with Machado who was on the DL all season and Harper. The O's and Jays are stacked, but Boston had the best AL record but a tight budget. Can they bring in one more player to put them over the top? Houston is in a bit of a mess: none of the real life pitching studs are effective in this league...and they are negative in the budget area, some hard choices are ahead. Atlanta had the best record in baseball, and a boatload of gate receipts, so barring free agency disasters, hopefully I can keep them strong for years to come. Finally figured out the logistics for my off season to make things equitable as well as bringing the real players to their current /new teams. Will try this season to also have teams compete for the players still in my league that aren't in the MLBPA anymore to add some surprise. I did that at the trade deadline, with several teams offering the Reds trades for Billy Hamilton, for example, then simulated and found the Reds weren't interested in moving him. New tone now for the Reds' off season to keep him part of the roster OR get more.

Just too bad I gotta take a two trips in the coming weeks before i can get to it. Is it wrong of me that I wish I didn't have my upcoming Miami vacation with my wife?

Just extra stuff here. I have budgets on in the franchise which appears to be a mistake looking back, can’t change it either. Did some future sims to see what the budget system would look like to see if squeezing Kershaw in would ‘break’ it. Kinda does. Game won’t let me do anything in FA after the exclusive negotiation period. I don’t see the realism there. I get it’s a video game and that the budget is different and scaled lower if that’s the right way to word it, compared to real life but is the Show telling me that if the Yankees irl chose to flex their financial muscle and signed both Machado and Harper that they wouldn’t be able to do anything in future FA’s and that they’d be losing money all the time because of it, paying out more then they are making? I don’t buy that at all.

I get that if they were to add 2 more huge contracts to the payroll they very likely wouldn’t be shopping at the top or even second tier of the FA market for a while and wouldn’t be taking significant contracts back in trades. Would rather keep myself in check, which I assume that budgets off means you do. Whatever though, i’ll have fun with another 3 seasons or so of the franchise and then move on to a new one on a future edition of The Show.

Yankees, Dodgers, and Red Sox users, I recommend budgets off if you wish to be able to spend like the real life Yankees, Red Sox, and Dodgers can and do.
The problem with turning them off is I don't see why anyone would let a decent free agent walk if there are no budgets. Does purchasing the extra budget money help at all? I tried this with my Mets franchise when I was trying to trade for Realmuto but all it seemed to do was put extra money in my bank and I still couldn't make the trade due to budgetary constraints

Now that you mention it, I wish we had some say in who gets the WS MVP if our team wins it. Amed Rosario won it for me after hitting 400 and I think he had one RBI and didn't really do anything worth remembering. Cespedes on the other hand had multiple game changing HRs, but his average was probably around 200 so he got passed over

True. Geuss there’s no great option. Even after an offseason of only signing Harper and Britton (Robertson and Walker were let go) the cash flow is barely positive, which is kind of ridiculous considering what a huge market team it is. Budget system needs work. On top of that the way they did it seems more confusing then it needs to be. Maybe for most teams it’s fine but for the financial juggernauts of baseball it’s pretty unrealistic.

Not trying to come at them here but maybe they do it that way to get franchise players that don’t play online/DD to buy stubs in order to buy extra budget? Not even sure how it works. Does it not take effect immediately? I have had the same experience as you with buying budget, dosen’t seem to do anything, like you said it just goes to the bank and you still can’t take on more salary in trades or spend more on free agents.

Does using Armor's method of assigning sponsorships based on market size (ex. big markets get gold, lower markets get bronze) have any impact on the budget issues? Trying to determine if that may help at all. If not, I'll probably just use budgets off from now on since I use 30 team control.

I think the best solution if you don't want to control 30 teams is to figure out which teams you want to be the big spenders and find some career minor leaguers on their roster that don't have a future with the team and jack up their salaries to $20 million per player. If you do this to three players and then the cpu doesn't re-sign them to the same ridiculous salary you will have created an extra $60 million in budget room. I've never tried this but in theory it should create extra budget room

Cardinals get first win of spring over Astros, 7-2

The Cardinals got their first win of the spring beating the Astros 7-2. Also, George Springer got his first hit of the spring off old teammate Sonny Gray to snap his hitless streak at 9 at-bats. Patrick Wisdom drove in 3 runs and Paul DeJong drove in 3 as well in route to the Cardinals winning 7-2. Jack Flaherty was dominant in 2 innings allowing just 1 hit while striking out 4 and issuing a walk. The lone pair of runs were scored off Tyler Lyons who allowed Carlos Correa to triple home a run and then score on a Preston Tucker sac fly.

Centerfield continues to be a battle between Harrison Bader and Magnerius Sierra. Bader played the full game today going 2 for 3 with a walk. He should've went 3 for 3 but Preston Tucker took away a sure double with a terrific diving catch. Bader also stole 2 bases during the game.

Next up is the Twins. Newcomer Jose Quintana will get the start.

                  Cardinals fall to Twins 2-0

The Cardinals lost to the Twins this afternoon 2-0, falling to 1-3 in spring training. Jose Quintana started the game for the Cardinals and went 3 innings due to low pitch count (left at 35 pitches) but took the loss after giving up an earned run in the 3rd. J.T. Realmuto drove home Byron Buxton after Buxton doubled and then moved to 3rd on a Nick Gordon flyout. Realmuto came up with 1 out and lined a single into left to drive home the run. The Twins would get one more off of Tyler Beede when Eric Hosmer's sac fly brought home Jeffrey McNeil.

The Cardinals played without a regular starter in the game, aside from possibly Harrison Bader. The Cardinals didn't sub the entire game and only were able to get 4 hits off the Twins pitching staff. 2 of those hits belonged to Francisco Pena who is thought to be the backup catcher when the regular season starts. Braendan McKay and Stephen Piscotty accounted for the other 2 hits.

Next up is the Orioles. The Cardinals will start Luke Weaver.

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

So after my biggest break from the game so far this year(2 weeks), I am back to eat some games up and get through some franchises. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to play the game, I had a bunch of stuff happen at once(leak in my co-op and had to live out of a hotel for 11 days) and also during that stretch one of my dogs got really sick and had to be hospitalized. Luckily he’s ok now and back with us.

Got right back into my Oakland A’s Fantasy Franchise and finished out a 10 game road trip, just passing the halfway point in the season. After blowing the first game of the trip on the worst outing of the year by rookie closer Jordan Hicks(0.2 inn, 4 ER), we finished the trip winning the remaining 9 games increasing our MLB best record to 53-29 including a dominant 11.5 game lead over the 2nd place Angels in the West. Rookie sensations Shohei Ohtani(10-5)and Michael Kopech(10-2) are absolutely dominating on the bump. Ohtani leads MLB in Ks with 167 and Kopech is 4th in the AL with an ERA of 2.42.

Khris (MUTHA- F@$&1N) “Krush” Davis. This guy is like a cheat code. He just continues to mash at an unbelievable pace. Pitchers would be smart to start walking him 3-4 times per game. Over the 10 game road trip he increased his season AVG from .278 to .304! He also mashed 9 HR and drove in 17 runs. Guy is trying to lock up the MVP race before the All-Star break. He’s now at .304, 48 HR, 86 RBI and 78 runs.

                      Cardinals fall to Orioles 8-3

Cardinals jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on the Orioles only to watch it quickly evaporate behind the meltdown of Luke Weaver and Alex Reyes, and end up losing 8-3 to the Orioles. The Cardinals are now 1-4 this spring.

Luke Weaver looked good in his first two innings. He allowed no hits and struck out 3 while issuing one free pass. In the 3rd, he was knocked around to the tune of 5 hits and 4 runs. Miguel Socolovich came in and ended the onslaught. In the 4th Alex Reyes came in as scheduled and was roughed up for 4 runs on 7 hits over his 3 innings of work. Both Reyes and Weaver are competing for the 5th and final rotation spot.

The Cardinals bullpen was a bright spot as Socolovich, Dean Kiekheffer, and John Brebbia combined to pitch 3 scoreless and hitless innings.

The Cardinals played their expected opening day starters the entire game and were held to 3 runs on 7 hits. Juan Fabregas and Patrick Wisdom were the lone bright spots accounting for all 3 RBI's and 5 of the 7 hits (Fabregas went 3 for 3 with a walk, a triple, and a homerun, Wisdom 2 for 3 with 2 RBI on a double) The only other hit was earned by Matt Carpenter.

The Cardinals will now host the Twins who beat them just a few days ago. Michael Wacha will start for the Cardinals and is expected to go 3 innings or 50 pitches, whichever occurs first.

Cardinals re-sign Miles Mikolas to a 2 year deal. DFA Alex Reyes

In another strange turn of events the Cardinals have re-signed Miles Mikolas to a 2 year deal worth $10M. Mikolas was not signed during the exclusive contract negotiation period and then seemingly disappeared from the free agent market.(he literally disappeared to where I thought he retired). But Mikolas is once again a free agent seeking work and the Cardinals are happy to bring him back.

In what is going to shock fans and people around baseball is that in order to make room for Mikolas on the 40 man roster, the Cardinals have elected to designate Alex Reyes for assignment. The thought is that the Cardinals will look to trade Reyes, and shouldn't have too much of an issue finding a trade partner.

Alex Reyes was once the top prospect in the Cardinals organization, but after 3 years, although not full years, of pitching at the big league level, the results are not what the Cardinals expected. Reyes has pitched to the tune of 5.68 ERA in his big league games with a WHIP of 1.80. The last two seasons, Reyes has struggled in the minors, even being demoted from Memphis to Springfield last season. Reyes has also been seemingly passed up by Luke Weaver, Kyle Funkhouser, and possibly now Tyler Beede.

Miles Mikolas went 9-2 last year for the Cardinals with a 2.92 ERA. He wasn't re-signed in the 5 day exclusive negotiation period as the Cardinals were trying to figure out their roster/staff and see the market. He then disappeared as it was thought he decided to unexpectedly retire. But here he is a week into spring training and the Cardinals are jumping at the idea of re-signing him. Bringing him back likely means that he will be the 5th starter when camp breaks and Weaver, Beede, and Funkhouser will start the year in Memphis. As noted above, Reyes is almost certainly going to be in a new uniform in 2 weeks.

The Cardinals are set to take on the Twins this afternoon. Mikolas will not be available.

Yankees, Blue Jays, and A's favorites to be trade partner for Alex Reyes

The Cardinals are still mulling over a decision on what to do with Alex Reyes after designating him for assignment 4 days ago. The Cardinals have 10 days to trade him, outright him to Memphis (he would have to clear waivers), or release him. Neither option where the Cardinals don't get a return on their investment seems to be in play here. So the question becomes who are the Cardinals willing to work with to get the best return for Reyes. One certainty is the Cardinals have let fellow National League teams know that they will not be part of the negotiations.

As it stands today, the Yankees, Blue Jays, and A's are the favorites as they have pieces the Cardinals would be interested in. Whether a deal can be made still remains to be determined. As for who the Cards are eyeballing:

                          Yankees

                          RP Johan Oviedo
                          OF C.J. McElroy
                          SS Alexander Vargas

The Cardinals and Yankees have been trade partners before and it appears the Cardinals will ring their phones again to see what deals could be struck for Alex Reyes. The Cardinals will likely not get all 3 of the players the covet, but they want at least 2 of those 3 in a deal. Oviedo is a Top 50 prospect who was in the Cardinals organization, but was traded to the Yankees prior and has flourished in their farm system. Now the Cardinals would like him back. McElroy is another former Cardinal prospect, but he was not re-signed when the Cardinals landed Corey Ray (now on the Yankees) a few seasons ago. McElroy also has flourished into a Top 50 prospect in all of baseball. Vargas is a SS who is a few years away from the big leagues, but the Cardinals love his upside. He too is a Top 50 prospect with defensive abilities that are off the charts. Waiting on his bat to catch up is the only reason he's not in the big leagues right now.

                          Blue Jays

                          SP Drew Harrington
                          SP Sandy Alcantara

Again, 2 former Cardinals (a trend is forming here). Harrington was claimed in this past season's Rule 5 Draft. The Cardinals tried in the offseason to get him back without success. Sandy Alcantara is another former prospect who was not re-signed by the organization and flourished elsewhere. Alcantara was let go because of Reyes, and now the Cardinals are wanting to swap prospect for prospect. Alcantara pitched for the Blue Jays this past season starting 11 games, going 6-3 with a 3.56 ERA. He struck out 82 hitters in those 11 games.

                          A's

                          CP Marquis Rodriguez

The Cardinals are only interested in one man from the A's and that is Rodriguez. Rodriguez is a 23 year old closer that is ranked the 5th best prospect in baseball. The Cardinals who have spent the past few offseasons restructuring their bullpen would love to add Rodriguez. They went after him during the offseason but the A's asking price at the time was more than the Cardinals were willing to part with given the time period. I doubt the asking price has changed much, but the Cardinals never offered Alex Reyes as part of the deal.

So that is where they stand at the moment on Alex Reyes. The likelihood is that he'll be traded, although the Cardinals would love to be able to pass him through waivers, but I don't see any way he passes without being claimed.

The Cardinals are still listening to offers as they have 6 days to make something happen.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

                            Oakland A’s Fantasy Franchise 2018

7/6: We just finished a quick 5 game Homestand. After dropping the opener to Cleveland to stop our win streak at 9, we took the back two games of the series and made quick work of the Padres for a 2 game sweep to finish 4-1 on the Homestand and improve to 57-30 on the year with a comfortable 14.5 game lead over the slumping Angels in the West.

We got two more amazing starts from Kopech and Ohtani who each pitched 8 innings of 1 run ball to pick up their league best(3-way tie) 11th wins. Ohtani increased his MLB leading K total to 175 and Kopech lowered his ERA to a current AL best 2.33!

Davis added 3 more HR to increase his MLB leading total to 51!! Barring injury, Barry Bonds record is toast! Ohtani added a 2 HR game in the final game of the Homestand to bring his season total to 14.

Now we head to Cleveland to kick off a 10 game road trip(CLE/HOU/S.F.) that will lead us up to the All-Star break where we should be well represented in D.C.

Did anyone find a fix to the bug that won't let you advance to the Regular Season? I really want to continue my franchise but nothing I tries advances it. It just locks up.

20 games left in my Blue Jays Franchise and with a record of 78-64 we currently have the 1st wildcard spot with 1,5 games ahead of the Red Sox who are struggling after leading the division for a long time. Yankees are now ahead but still not out of reach.
We are 3 games ahead of the Mariners so at least a wildcard spot should be possible.
Justin Smoak slowed down big time but still leads the HR race with currently 41.
We decided to go all in and called up both supertalents Vladdy and Bo.
Next up the series finale vs the Indians and after that a 3 game series against the Red Sox which could decide the race for wildcard spot 1 for us.
