The Padres continue their off-season as Free Agency rolls along with the top tier of Free Agents now signed, leaving possible bargains on the market. In that mindset, the Padres made a few signings that could pay dividends at the major league level. The Padres bullpen was a disaster last season so the team is looking for all the help they can get and they have signed relievers Joe Kelly and Collin McHugh. Catcher has also been a weak spot for the team as light hitting defensive minded Austin Hedges projects as the starter. Evan Gattis has been signed to a 1 year deal for 4 million to platoon with Hedges and provide a bigger bat in that spot. Outfield is also a weak spot for the team as both corner outfielders Jose Pirela (.218) and Hunter Renfroe (.221) failed to hit for a consistent average. The team has a few young outfielders in 21-year old Rickey Atcho (78 OVR) and 19-year old Rodger Score (73) but they are in no rush to fast track them to the majors and stunt their development. Other than 1B Eric Hosmer, the infield is also in flux with open spots at 2B, SS and 3B as young stars Luis Urias, Fernando Tatis Jr, and Alfonzo Visperas projected to start the season in the minors. Freddy Galvis and Chase Headley are among the remaining FAs but the Padres have no interest in bringing either of them back. It appears Galvis will be on his way to Baltimore as he is in negotiations with the Orioles.
The team is exploring the trade market with infield options Cesar Hernandez, Didi Gregorius, Brandon Drury, Jed Lowrie, and Whit Merrifield seemingly available. Gregorius is of note as he appears to be out of a position going into a contract year which puts him on the block. The major signing of Manny Machado appears to lock him in as the next Yankees SS as Machado has stated he wants to play SS and not 3B. The Yankees 3B situation is also up in the air as the team signed Logan Forsythe to a 1 year deal for 3 million. This gives them a very crowded infield situation with Neil Walker, Didi, Machado, Drury, Gleyber, Torreyes and Tyler Wade.
