Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

Saw that there was a new OSFM roster update out so o decided to restart my San Diego Padres franchise. The previous one didn't go as expected as I have a habit of making numerous (small) trades that end up making my team look unrecognizable. I want to stick close to what the opening day roster is and then closer to the trade deadline see where we are at and then potentially make some moves. Saw there was some additions to the OSFM roster so I'm excited to get started.

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

We took 3 out of 4 in Atlanta to get back to .500 on the year, 2nd place in the Central and 4 1/2 games behind the surging Reds. The previous series we split a 4 game series with the Dodgers, so we 5-3 in our last 8 games. Not the best, but better than we've been doing lately.

Stephen Piscotty has been on a roll as he's hit safely in 18 straight games, but we lost him to a Sprained Ligament in his knee so he's on the 10 Day DL. Jeremy Hazelbaker has been called up in his place, although I may switch and bring up Harrison Bader or Oscar Mercado instead and let Tommy Pham play right field everyday until Piscotty returns. But for at least one game we'll let Hazelbaker play right and see what he can do.

Next up is a 7 game homestand as we have 3 against the Giants and then 4 vs the Rockies.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Is anyone able to give me a list of players who *usually* retire after the first season of a franchise?

Restarted Padres franchise with the new OSFM V2 Rosters and simmed through the first season and replicated major FA signings as in previous iteration.

Draft went well in the new Chise as well! With our 1st round pick we selected 21-year old OF Andreas Muriel from the Dominican Republic who has 96 potential and already sits at 73 overall with 53/66 vs RHP and 66/72 vs LHP and 76 speed so he has the tools to project into a star. The rest of the draft class includes 18 year old RHP Chang Ho Jang who has a 80 potential to go along with 99 velocity already as a 63 overall. And in typical Padre fashion we grabbed another talented infielder to add to the farm with 4th round pick 18-year old 3B Anthony Abercrombie who is a 66 overall with 88 potential and is a big time power bat with his 6'5 frame and already working with 61/63 power numbers. Our other two players of note are outfielders Mack Cope, a 68 overall solid contact hitter (73/69) with 70 potential and decent speed 82 and 18 year old 5'7 Johnnie McCoy from Staten Island, NJ with 81 Potential who at worst can develop into a pinch runner with 90 speed and 92 stealing.

This turn in FA, we decided to make some different moves as different players were available. Josh Harrison was available and I looked at him as an upgrade over both Jose Pirela and Freddy Galvis. He eventually signed a 2 year deal for 10 million to take over a starting IF spot, most likely SS in the short-term until Tatis Jr is ready.

Side note with the upgraded Gleyber Torres, the Yankees immediately locked him up for 10 years, 184 million already after one year. Good lord very proactive Yankees teaming locking up years before arbitration and free agency. Judge also got a 7 year deal for 125 million.

A handful of intriguing names were non-tendered that could be potential Padres including Chris Taylor, Yangervis Solarte, Joc Pederson, Brandon Drury, Avisail Garcia, Leury Garcia, Matt Shoemaker, Blake Treinen, Ronald Torreyes, Michael Taylor, Zack Wheeler, Aaron Altherr.

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

At the halfway point in the season, the Rays are the 24th best team in baseball with a 35-46 record after losing a 3 games series with the Rangers 2-1 after my personal nemesis Ronald Guzman clubbed 6 homers in the 3 games series, helping him up to second in the AL with 21 homers. Kris Davis is leading the majors with a pretty insane 30, combined with a difficult to believe .327 batting average. Not bad in your walk year!

It's been an exciting month with all the prospects coming up and it makes it genuinely exciting to hit a homer when down by 5 runs. All of them have had some success, most of them not a whole lot of it though.

Jake Bauers is definitely the one to hit the ground running with 4 homers and a .299 average through 20 games, while Willy Adames (.258, 0HR), Luis Robert (.242, 1HR), Brendan McKay (.230, 3HR) and C Bart Winslow (.229, 3HR) have all struggling a bit. Lots of encouraging signs though as they've all shown glimpses and the general level of fielding has improved as well with the young, athletic guys coming up.

Last years young guys have had more sustained success so far, with Justin Williams hitting .281 with 7HR and utility infielder Daniel Robertson is starting to look like a potentially huge asset after hitting .295, with 9 homers and 6 stolen bases. We have the makings of a very strong core of young players.

The less said about the pitching the better, with the exception of the outstanding Chris Archer (4-5, 2.63 ERA, 1.10 WHIP). Anthony Banda has impressed a bit since getting the call up, only giving up a couple of runs in the 10 innings he's pitched, cementing himself as our got lefty out of the pen. The bullpen is definitely an area we are going to have to target this summer if we want to start being a bit more competitive, along with possibly a genuine power bat to play 3B or DH.

I'm with the white sox and have a real life record. Struggling ready to make some moved and some call ups. I am close to making the trade for Manny. Plan to keep him for the season unless the Cubs make a trade for him in real life. I like him at the Cubs so what they trade for him is what I'll get. But hope to keep him for the season make some call ups in my pitching and make a run for a wildcard position. Loving playing with this team so far.

Just swept the Rangers to improve to 73-19.

Gearing up towards the All Star Break, and the trade deadline. Still unsure if I will make any moves, as there aren't many positions I can really improve on, maybe 2nd base, and 5th starter. Everything else seems to be pretty good.

I did have a couple outfield injuries, losing both JaCoby Jones and Mikie Mahtook to the 10 day DL, but neither should be out much longer than the 10 days.

                      Offseason + Spring Training - 2021

Another quite offseason for us. Alex Gordon did end up retiring. And Seth Maness was our only player eligible for free agency. We brought him back on a 2 year deal worth 8 million dollars. Other than that we made no moves. Saving up money to see what we need and who we need to bring back after this year. Danny Duffy, Salvador Perez, Cheslor Cuthbert, and Jorge Soler will be free agents after the season.

                      Spoiler

The biggest moves of the offseason saw Mike Trout and Clayton Kershaw switching leagues. Trout heads to the NL as he joins the Colorado Rockies. Kershawn to the AL as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays. The Indians spent 250 million on Kluber, Bauer and Salazaar to keep the top of their rotation intact.

Going into ST we had a lot of guys fighting for a lot of spots. Basically half the spots on the 25 man roster were up for grabs. In the Rotation we knew Duffy, Griffin and Junis had spots locked down. That left 2 spots open and a Long Relife role in the pen with 7 guys battling for them. Jesse Hahn and Nolan Watson ended up winning the last 2 spots in the rotation. Eric Skoglund heads to the pen as the LR / Spot Starter. I was going to give that spot to A.J. Cole. He had a lower WHIP and FIP. But Skoglund was out of options so he got the nod.

That left 8 guys fighting for 4 spots in the pen. Herrera, Maness and Cabrera had spots locked up. I originally planned to go with 13 position players but I wanted Zimmer on the team so we went with 13 pitcher instead. Jake Jewell, Kyle Zimmer, Jake Thompson and Angel Diaz ended up winning the battle rounding out the bullpen. Brandon Mauer was DFA'd

On the offensive side there were 5 spots open. Salvy, Mondesi, Whit and Bonifacio were locked into their positions. With Bubba and O'Hearn guaranteed at least a bench role. There were 12 guys trying to earn those spots. And a few showed up big time. Hunter Dozier will start out as our LF against RHP and our 1B against LHP. Jorge Soler is our full time DH. Myles Evans is our CF against RHP and LF against LHP. Nicky Lopez gets the backup IF spot. Meibrys Viloria takes over as the backup Catcher. It was another decision that came down to options. Viloria was out of them and I didnt want to risk losing him so Cam Gallagher got sent to AAA.

Forgot to post the draft from last season so here is a quick update.
                      • Freddy Morse - 21 year old reliever. Has a chance to be the best pitcher in the organization. Throws a 4SFB, Sweeping Curve and a Slider. Can reach the mid 90's. ETA - 2023

                      • Rodney Chastain - 22 year old starter. With us expecting to contend in the next couple years we wanted to get some guys who were close to ML ready. Chastain fits that perfectly coming out of college. Throws a 4SFB, Change, Cutter and Curve. Sits in the upper 90's topping out at 100. Should be a fast riser. Could end up in the majors by the end of the year. Probably won't be any better than a low end #3. ETA 2022

                      • Enrique Mendoza - 20 year old 2B out of the Dominican Republic. Has some things to work on. Mainly his defense. With not much power 2B is about his only option. Pretty AVG across the board with everything else. ETA - 2024

                      • Edgar Gallegos - 18 year old starter. Big guy at 6'5" 218 lbs. Throws a 4SFB, Curve, Slider and 2SFB. Can reach the mid to upper 90's. Can be a good #2 or great #3. - 2024

The goal for this year is to get to .500. Anything more is a bonus. We need to see where we are with what we have and what we need to acquire. We start the year off in Houston before heading to Seattle. Our home opener is April 2nd against the White Sox. 32 games in March/April. 19 are at home. And 19 are against teams that were over .500 last season.

Texas Rangers Update : Season 1 MOM (End of Season Update)

Season 1 has come to an end and it was a very disappointing season as we finished in a tie for 4th in the division with the Angels. Our record of 72-90 was probably about what was expected. We lost Beltre and Hamels in Free Agency. I was kind of surprised that Beltre didn't retire. He came off a 279 season and led the team with 86 RBI's. I make it a point to not sign anyone if the contract takes them past the age of 36. The regression is to dramatic in the game. Beltre went from a 89 to a 73 by seasons end. Hamels went through the entire free agency period without being signed. As spring training starts he is still a 35 year old free agent. The biggest name to sign elsewhere was Bryce Harper. Harper signed with the Padres for some reason.

                        End of season results:

                        National League

                        East- Nationals 99-63
                        Central- Cubs 97-65

                        W/C- Dodgers 94-68

                        RF- Mazara
                        DH Choo

Pitching ( here lies the problem)

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

Decided to delete all my franchises, and just focus on one. I settled on Atlanta over Arizona, mainly because I love Ronald Acuna as a prospect, and their farm system (LOADED!!) creates some unique possibilities for blockbuster deals, etc.

When I started the franchise up, there were seven big time prospects in the free agent pool just waiting to be signed. And I happily obliged

Side note : Is this normal? I've noticed in every franchise I've done, or re-done, there were always 5 (or more) computer generated prospects who had high B or A potential ratings.

Three of those seven prospects would become key components to two separate blockbuster deals.

                          1B - Felix Sanchez (6'5/240)
                          Age : 19
                          Potential : 95/A
Projection : Power hitting infielder, who will also hit for average. Already has freakish power hitting ratings, with his contact rating already in the 60's.

                          SP - Clay Shelton (6-3, 198)
                          Age : 20
                          Potential : 90/A
Projection : Already has a 95 mph fastball, and a slider that hits 89, with devastating movement. Has future No.1 or No.2 potential.

                          Age : 21
                          Potential : 87/B
Projection : Looks to be a plus defender in the outfield, and a threat to swipe 30+ bags with his 95 speed rating. More of a contact guy, and a future leadoff hitter.

The Atlanta Braves pulled off another blockbuster deal with the Oakland Athletics. With the A's having a reputation of being penny pinchers, they decided to trade All-Star pitcher Sean Mananea, instead of giving him a new deal.

                            End of May - 2021

For the first 2 weeks of the season I thought we were going to be great. We took 2 of 3 against the Astros. 2 of 3 against the Mariners. Swept the White Sox. And swept the Twins in a 4 games series. 11-2 before things went to ****. We ended up getting swept by the Red Sox, Indians and Astros. And lost a series to the Yankees. We ended April at 15-17 but have gotten things back under control since. 16-10 in May including wins in 8 of our last 11 games. Unfortunately those 3 losses have come to the division leading Indians. 5 of our 7 division losses have come at the hands of them so far. We are 31-27 overall. 2 games back in the division and currently control the 2nd Wild Card.

The offense has improved significantly. We are hitting .267/.331/.426. Compared to .248/.323/.381 last season. We are 9th in runs with 247, 15th in 2B with 200. 11th in 3B with 12 and 13th in HR with 67. Our 39 SB is good for 16th and our SB% is 3rd at 75%. All of that with one of our best hitters missing 33 games.

                            Spoiler

1st half Ryan O'Hearn is a forced to be reckoned with. He is 3rd in MVP voting. 6th in HR in the AL and tied for 5th in RBI. 5th in SLG% and 7th in OPS. He stepped up big when we needed him most.

Jorge Bonifacio went down with a broken hand on April 3rd and missed 5 weeks. Struggled a bit when he came back but has started to figure things out. Didn't hit his first HR until May 22nd. And now has 4 in his last 9 games.

Hunter Dozier was very close to being DFA. On April 23rd he was hitting .209 with 1 HR. Since then he has hit .380/.393/.685 with 8 HR including three 2 HR games. He missed 8 games near the end of may.

Elier Hernandez came up when Bonifacio got hurt. In his first 15 games he hit .385/.459/.538. Slowed down since then but is currently the Rookie of The Year leader in the AL.

Myles Evans hasn't done a whole lot with the bat. Still finds ways to get on base so he isnt useless. Recently moved him down in the order a bit to take some pressure off of him. so hopefully he can start to figure things out.

It may be time to ship Whit Merrifield to some other team. He has gotten worse and worse the last few years. Not sure he is much better than the younger options we have down in AAA. He isnt worth much if anything. But something is better than nothing.

The pitching has been our biggest issue so far. Our ERA is 26th in the Majors at 4.63. We are 3rd in Walks with 167. And 4th last in Strikeouts with 421. We have also allowed 73 HR. The 22nd most.

Danny Duffy got off to an awful start. Gave up 32 runs in his first 25.2 IP. He hurt his hamstring and missed one start. Since returning he has a 4.70 ERA in 30.2 IP. Getting better. But still has a long way to go. It's not like he is getting unlucky either. His FIP is 5.75. Not good for a guy in the last year of his deal.

Jesse Hahn is having his best season since 2018. Hopefully he can keep it up since no one else seems to care much.

Nolan Watson is gonna go down to AAA. A.J. Cole has been pretty good down there with a 2.68 ERA in 53.2 IP. He came up for a week when Duffy got hurt. He has a 6.75 ERA in 9.1 IP. It was out of the pen though so want to see how he is in the rotation.

Out in the pen things have been a little rough. Diaz and Herrera are doing great. Diaz has 1 blown save in 15 attempts. Herrera has his highest K/9 and BB/9 since 2016. Jake Thompson has also been good despite his ERA. He gave up 6 runs in his last appearance making things look bad. Aside from that game he has a 2.03 ERA in 13.2 IP. Zimmer has been up and down. Easily the 4th best guy out of the pen though. We are also going to send Cabrera down. He has been getting better but not quick enough. Josh Staumont will take his place and make his MLB debut.

37 games left until the AS break. 21 of them will be at home. 19 of them will be against the division. And 17 are against teams at or over .500 We are 20-9 at home. 15-7 in the division. 14-2 against the teams that aren't the Indians. I think we can gain a few more games before the break. Doubt we go into it any worse than .500.

When I started the franchise up, there were seven big time prospects in the free agent pool just waiting to be signed. And I happily obliged

Side note : Is this normal? I've noticed in every franchise I've done, or re-done, there were always 5 (or more) computer generated prospects who had high B or A potential ratings.

Three of those seven prospects would become key components to two separate blockbuster deals.

                              1B - Felix Sanchez (6'5/240)
                              Age : 19
                              Potential : 95/A
Projection : Power hitting infielder, who will also hit for average. Already has freakish power hitting ratings, with his contact rating already in the 60's.

                              SP - Clay Shelton (6-3, 198)
                              Age : 20
                              Potential : 90/A
Projection : Already has a 95 mph fastball, and a slider that hits 89, with devastating movement. Has future No.1 or No.2 potential.

I also like to see what prospects are hanging around in the free agent pool and picked up 4 guys myself that are key components to my San Diego Padres franchise. I picked up a 19 year old, 78 overall, A potential SS who I started year one! Also picked up a 20 year old, 80 overall l, B potential 3B who also started year one. The two other guys who have now been called up to majors are 23 year old, 80 overall, B potential Catcher and 21 year old, 74 overall, B potential 1B. The Padres needed all the help they could get and now in my second season my team is looking pretty good without having to break the bank for free agents.

I love it, and it's always a mixed bag.

I've started franchises where it was loaded with big time prospects. Then turn around and do another franchise with another team, and have maybe 2-3 prospects worth signing/developing.
