Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

Can someone explain how Gold Gloves are determined in franchise mode?

I just wrapped up a season where my first baseman had more assists, more putouts, fewer errors, and a better fielding percentage than the winner (and the two guys listed as in the running throughout the year).

I realize in real life there are other factors at play, but are there other objective measures the game considers? I don't see any stats that would seem relevant here.

That would be an easy question to answer if someone explain how Gold Gloves are determined in real life. Unfortunately gold gloves are voted on by managers and coaches in each league, so while many of the top fielders get chosen, it sometimes also turns into a popularity contest (See: 2010 Yankees as an example when Jeter, Tex and Cano all got gold gloves despite posting negative UZR numbers).

So no, I don't imagine anyone can pinpoint exactly how they're chosen in the game, but I'd imagine it's just as flawed a system as the MLB currently has.

        About what I expected. Thanks.

Makes sense, I guess, that I see the same guys at some positions win it every year in my franchise despite not being elite defensive players.

First game in Griffith Stadium was a weird one.

Not so much because of the park but because the Marlins managed to draw 8 walks in 3 innings.

Needless to say, this gave the Marlins a nice leg up to jumping out to an early lead.

They wouldn't get any more walks, but they picked up 6 extra base hits: 4 doubles and two triples.

"I don't know who can hit a ball out of this place, " Marlins slugging 3B Stan Brito commented, "I mean, I'm going to do my best to try but it's so far. I thought Fenway was made funny."

The Marlins also made four errors, but none of those were in the outfield, where the park is challenging. No, all the infielders, except 1B Ortega, took turns making mistakes.

In the end, though, the Marlins won the game 11-5.

Rookie Shane Koehne picked up his 3rd win on the season, allowing 1 run on 3 hits in 6 1/3 innings of work.

The Marlins send their veteran ace Damian Boeve to the mound in the series finale.

"I hope Sam [Javeri] is ready to run. I hope I can get balls hit out there all day, let them hit 420 fly outs, " Boeve commented with a grin.

Damnit, damnit, damnit, damnit, damnit, damnit, damnit!

I had a perfect game going. Bottom of the ninth, 2 outs, pitching to pinch hitter Franchy Cordero. ONE OUT away from my first ever perfect game in MLB The Show. I could taste it!

Got a first pitch strike with a fastball up and outside. Second fastball missed high for ball one. Tried the slider, missed outside for ball two. Went back to the fastball, let it get away a bit too far outside for ball three. 3-1 count, tried to throw a lowish change-up to either get a swing and maybe groundball or get it taken for a strike, instead the ******* pitch goes low for ball 4.

That jackass Cordero walks to first base and my first ever perfect game goes up in absolute flames with two outs in the ninth.

Edit - Well, I guess it wasn't a total lost cause. After getting the "pitcher is tired" message on the very next pitch, ended up walking Manuel Margot in 6 pitches, before getting Freddy Galvis to fly out to center on my 106th pitch of the game to at least finish the game with a no-hitter, only the second or third no-hitter of my MLB The Show career.

I still would of rather had the perfect game though.

At least he didn't drag bunt a single or something. I'd be hitting the guy every game in the series if a hitter did something like that to ruin my perfect game or no-hitter!

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

The Marlins were locked in a pitcher's duel with Griffith Stadium playing like the Grand Canyon.

There were a few hard hit balls, ironically most of them given up by the Marlins ace Boeve, but they were to center field.

"I told Sam to get ready to run, " Boeve laughed after the game, "In our old park, and probably any other park, I probably give up a couple homers. I mean, two triples and a double is bad enough."

Boeve, being the competitor he is, got past those extra base hits until the 9th where he was tiring and finally gave up his first run. Even then, it was on a sacrifice fly, so it cost a precious out. Boeve would get a strike out, just his 4th on the game, and then one last fly ball to center to preserve the 2-1 win.

Brito, who wondered how to hit a ball out of this place, hit one out of this place to left field. It wasn't a monster shot, just had enough carry to get out.

"Guess that's the trick, have to hit it straight away left. I kinda like going to all fields but whatever, " Brito shrugged.

That home run gave the Marlins a 2-0 lead through six innings and proved to be the deciding factor.

The Marlins will welcome the Mets in for four games.

The win was Boeve's league-leading 10th win. He lowered his ERA to 1.84 with the performance.

You have a point there! If it had been a drag bunt or some cheap bloop hit, I probably would have been more pissed. Unfortunately I should have just aimed for center of the plate and tried to flame a fastball past him. My pitcher was tired as hell, almost no stamina left by the time I did get the third out, so my pitches were bouncing all over the place, especially against Margot in the next at-bat. Trying to get cutesy around the corners or low in the strike zone with a nearly empty stamina tired out pitcher is pretty much what screwed me.

End of Regular Season - 2023

The Royals are back in the playoffs for the first time since winning it all in 2015. The last month was not pretty though. We went 6-1 to start september then things sort of fell apart. After being pretty healthy through the first 5 months we lost Angel Diaz and Salvador Perez in the span of a week. Diaz suffered a shoulder tear and Perez dislocated his shoulder. Diaz can return in the next 10 days or so. Perez will be out for another 3-4 weeks. We finished the month 9-13. 88-74 overall. 4 games ahead of the Tigers.

                    Spoiler

The offense took a step back with Perez gone and others falling into slumps. We averaged 4.03 runs per game after putting up 4.75 in the previous 133 games. We finished the season hitting .264/.336/.425 with 750 Runs (4th), 276 Doubles (13th), 26 Triples (21st), 193 HR (14th), 975 Walks (9th), 1268 Strikeouts (7th), 109 Stolen Bases (17th) and a .637 SB% (22nd).

                    Spoiler

The pitching was about the same as it had been the last few months. We finished with a 3.86 ERA (9th), 5 Complete Games (6th), 8 Shutouts (25th), 625 Earned Runs (8th), 189 HR Allowed (13th), 453 Walks (1st) and 1255 Strikeouts (25th).

Our rotation for the postseason will be Hahn, Junis, Nola and Watson. Andrew Edwards replaces Angel Diaz for at least the first round. Cam Gallagher replaces Perez for what will most likely be the entire postseason. Shane Bieber will be sent down for another reliever. Jake Jewell will come stay up and take his spot.

That's awesome! Makes it even more rewarding when it is that difficult to get there. Nicely done!

Its also good to hear baseball is still being played in 2023. I was hoping this game wouldn't morph into Call of Duty by then, playing in abandoned, war torn stadiums, because we are in WW3 or something.

Atlanta Braves Franchise - 2018 Spring Training Wrap-Up

                          Spring Training Record: 11-18

                          Pitching Staff

Teheran had a very strong spring and will get the nod on opening day. Chase Whitley earns a spot in the rotation after a solid audition as a SP. I'm really excited about Sean Newcomb, who I absolutely dominated with in the 1 start of his I played to the tune of 9 K's in 4 IP. Luiz Gohara wins an unceremonious competition for the 5th starter role, as Folty got absolutely pounded every time he took the mound and will start the season in AAA. The back end of the pen performed well, with my middle relief corps looking a bit shaky and not very promising. I will start the season with 3 lefties in the pen and send Jose Ramirez down to close games in AAA. Anibal Sanchez was just OK in a long relief role but was already down to 65 ovr by the end of spring. I probably could have passed him through waivers successfully but with the amount of pitching prospects I have I didn't need him taking up a spot in the minors, so instead decided to flip him to Miami for 2 C-level position players. Here is how the pitching staff breaks camp (spring stats included):

                          SP1 Julio Teheran 78 - 4-1, 31.0 IP, 29 SO, 11 BB, 2.61 ERA, 1.19 WHIP
                          SP2 Brandon McCarthy 77 - 2-3, 30.2 IP, 25 SO, 11 BB, 4.40 ERA, 1.50 WHIP
                          SP3 Chase Whitley 75 - 1-2, 29.0 IP, 13 SO, 9 BB, 2.48 ERA, 1.17 WHIP
                          SP4 Sean Newcomb 75 - 1-2, 24.2 IP, 31 SO, 16 BB, 2.92 ERA, 1.38 WHIP
                          SP5 Luiz Gohara 72 - 0-1, 22.0 IP, 15 SO, 9 BB, 4.09 ERA, 1.36 WHIP

                          CP Arodys Vizcaino 82 - 0-0, 9.0 IP, 17 SO, 1 BB, 2.00 ERA, 0.78 WHIP, 5/6 SV
                          SU Peter Moylan 77 - 0-0, 6.1 IP, 9 SO, 0 BB, 4.26 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, 3/5 HLD
                          MRP Sam Freeman 73 - 1-0, 14.0 IP, 13 SO, 5 BB, 3.86 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 5/6 HLD
                          MRP Rex Brothers 72 - 0-0, 6.0 IP, 6 SO, 2 BB, 0.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP
                          MRP Grant Dayton 73 - 1-2, 18.0 IP, 23 SO, 5 BB, 4.00 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 5/5 HLD
                          MRP Miguel Socolovich 70 - 0-1, 14.0 IP, 10 SO, 6 BB, 5.14 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 2/2 HLD
                          LRP Aaron Blair 70 - 0-1, 13.2 IP, 11 SO, 4 BB, 7.24 ERA, 1.76 WHIP, 4/4 HLD

                          Position Players

As I suspected the offense is pretty sterile. I found myself bunting, stealing, and putting on the hit and run a lot to try to eke out runs. Most of my projected starters performed well enough, except 3rd base is still a massive problem with Culberson and Camargo both hitting below .200 with very little power. I have no other options at this point and will platoon them for the time being. I did end up calling up Acuna - he was terrible for the first few weeks then finally started putting some hits together toward the end of spring. He will make the team and start in LF - sink or swim! Lane Adams was a pleasant surprise off the bench batting over .300 with some power, so he will come along as well. The rest of my bench is filled out with defensive depth so I can spell my starters and keep them healthy. Here's my opening day lineup for Game 1 against the Phils:

                          CF Ender Inciarte 86 - .247, 0 HR, 4 RBI, 6 R, 5 SB
                          2B Ozzie Albies 82 - .314, 0 HR, 6 RBI, 9 R, 1 SB
                          RF Nick Markakis 78 - .333, 4 HR, 11 RBI, 15 R, 1 SB
                          1B Freddie Freeman 91 - .266, 6 HR, 11 RBI, 12 R, 0 SB
                          C Tyler Flowers 79 - .292, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 8 R, 0 SB
                          3B Johan Camargo 67 - .139, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 4 R, 0 SB
                          SS Dansby Swanson 77 - .326, 0 HR, 13 RBI, 9 R, 0 SB
                          LF Ronald Acuna 76 - .175, 0 HR, 7 RBI, 8 R, 1 SB
                          P Julio Teheran 78

                          Bench
                          UT Ryan Flaherty 64 - .115, 0 HR, 3 RBI, 2 R, 0 SB
                          IF Charlie Culberson 71 - .187, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 5 R, 0 SB
                          C Kurt Suzuki 80 - .294, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 5 R, 0 SB
                          OF Lane Adams 66 - .324, 2 HR, 11 RBI, 5 R, 0 SB
                          OF Ezequiel Carrera 71 - .246, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 9 R, 1 SB

I don't expect to contend in 2018, and will need to be a little patient with player development as these guys blossom and get ready to become stars. I am absolutely stacked with pitching prospects but will need to get some power in this lineup over the next few years if I want to build a perennial contender.

                          Scouting

I take a pretty simple approach to scouting in this game. Hire the best scout in each region, spend one month discovering and one month scouting individual prospects until the draft. I cast a broad net during the discovery phase and just have each scout take a week or so with each position. My focus this year obviously is power for any position player that I scout. Looking through the depths of my minor league system, my initial thought is that my first pick should be a catcher or right fielder. When it comes to draft day, I try to focus more on potential than organizational need as A- and B- level prospects become pretty valuable for trades and development and any depth shortfalls I find can easily be filled with C-level prospects via free agent signings or minor trades.

That's all. Looking forward to getting started on the regular season. My next update will probably be after the draft.

These are some of the key top prospects for 2020 and where they are as far as if there on a major league roster or still in the minors. I'm going to follow the ones that are in the MLB and provide stats for them as a way to follow along this season. Also if some of the ones not in the MLB get called up I'll follow them as well.

We split a four game series with the Phillies, took 2 out of 3 against the Royals at home. Went on the road to Pittsburgh and lost 2 out of 3. Played our next game in Milwaukee, lost 7-5 and the dreaded injury bug struck again, this time taking Tommy Pham out of the lineup for 1-2 months with a calf injury. Pham was hitting .294 with 10 HR - 26 RBI and 6 stolen bases.
