    Anyone “play” RttS using franchise?

Was just curious how it’s worked out for anyone who has tried it. I kind of want to have some control over the team and more control over what happens with my player (since sometimes the cpu logic is...lacking) so I’ve been debating trying out player lock with a custom player.

And for anyone who has done this in the past, how do you handle progression? Take what the game gives you or do you implement a customized progression system?

Interesting idea, but you definitely would lose control over progression. I think you would need to let normal player development take place for fairness.

This is what I've been doing because I don't like the way RTTS is structured this year. Franchise with player lock is a pretty good substitute. The pros are (as you mentioned) roster control, the ability to set the lineup and not let the team force silly position changes on you. It's a little cumbersome though. It takes a lot longer to get through a season because you have to come back to the clubhouse after every game, whereas in RTTS you can play right through an entire series before you have to come back to the clubhouse screen. My biggest issue with it is in regard to setting the lineup for each game; you cannot (unless there's something I'm missing) make substitutions in the load up screens. You have to make them in the regular lineup screen in the team management section. That's kind of a pain when all you want to do is sub your catcher or give some guy a rest for just one game because then you have to go back in after the game and change it back to the regular guy. And in order to see what each guy's stamina is at in order to determine who needs a rest, as far as i can tell, the only eay to do it is to act like you are going to start a full game where you controll all players and go all the way to the screen where it shows players' stamina, make a note of who is low and in need of a rest and then back out all the way back to the franchise screen and go into the roster management section and make the changes. It just takes a bit more time and it's another reason why franchise seasons take a lot longer. Other than that, it's a good substitute for RTTS. When it comes to player progression, I assess my guy every 30 or 40 games. If i feel like he is underperforming, I add some points to various attributes. And even if I feel like he's doing too well, I will take some points off (Which Is actually an advantage over RTTS, where that's not possible).

Moreover, if you want to play as a starting pitcher, I actually think Franchise with Player Lock is superior to RTTS because: 1) the time issue is mostly mitigated; playing through a season will take only slightly longer (maybe not longer at all, because you won't need to do the training sessions); (2) you can give your player 4 or 5 pitches right off the bat, instead of waiting around for the game to let you have more pitches; and (3) the roster control advantage is even more advantageous because you can do things like pitch your guy on short rest if you think your team needs it.

YEP!! Awesome way to play. Although this yr I think ima jump back to the actual rtts game mode being that you cant upgrade by buying points

Why was that a reason to not play it before? You weren't obliged to buy points.

Honestly I couldnt help myself. I always ended up buying points. Also another thing was I can never decide between a pitcher or a position player

I feel ya on that second point. That's a struggle that I've constantly grappled with in my brain ever since first edition of The Show.

Re: Anyone “play” RttS using franchise?

I have a progression system I have set up for my position player.

                  Basically it goes as so:
                  I go week by week

If I want to increase contact : I do Hit total in one week ÷ 7 = 7 DAYS in a week.

Example 8 hits in 7 days = 8÷7 =1 progression point towards contact

Power progression : I base it off week again, if you have a power hitter 66+ power r/l) anything more than 3 hrs a week =+1

Max limit of two progresses each month.

Non power hitter 2hr or more in a week = +1

Vision: consecutive ABs with a successful hit in box score. 1 upgrade every other month
So if you go 4/4 in April give your vision +4 ( no upgrade for may) eligible in June...

                  Ill post more later

I tried to do customized once based on my player's ratings and then set "benchmarks" that he measured against month to month.

Normally, I just take what the game gives as I was never sure how accurate/reasonable it was and I don't do this enough to really get an idea (but I have done this because of RTTS in the past).

Other than the aforementioned issue with progression, this concept is interesting. I think it would be even better if you happen to have multiple RTTS characters going you could player lock them all and have your characters interact with each other, which would be pretty cool.

Yep. Only way I play. Some days I play only me, some days I include pitching, some days I manage, but still bat. I like the variety it offers me. I allow the progression system to do its job for the most part, but I find the system flawed and that's what drove me to franchise, not my progression, others progression upset me. Near the end of every season I go through every team and assess every player. Doesn't take that long tbh, I mostly focus on:

                        1. Is a star player regressing after having a great year?
                        2. Do the prospects have glaring weaknesses that would prevent them from being in MLB?
                        3. Is this aging player playing poorly enough to justify that huge attribute drop?

Re: Anyone “play” RttS using franchise?

I am not interested in player lock (whether it is in Franchise or RTTS) where I only play the plays my character is involved in. I would however play player lock if I controlled 1 player on the field but while the rest of the players are in the field the ball when it is hit to them. If someone wants to play only the plays where the ball is hit at them, then it's good that the game maker made this feature available to them. But from my perspective it is rather arcade'ish.

                            Hear me out.

I watch some YouTube RTTS videos where they have their defense set on slow'mo and where they only field the plays coming to them. So when the game renders you in the field at your position you know what's happening and when the game is on slow'mo is there really any challenge? It's much more challenging to play ever pitch at full speed not knowing if the ball will be hit your way or not and when it is hit to you, you need to deal with it. This is how the real world works. There is no slow'mo, there is no field only the balls coming my way. Yeah sure you may field the ball only 3 or so times a game or you may not field it at all. But that's baseball.

So I only bring this up because I have never tried the player lock in Franchise. In Franchise can you be assigned a position and play ever pitch in the game even though it may not be hit your way and likewise when at bat can you be on the bench as your teammates hit until it is your time to bat? If the answer is yes then perhaps I should investigate and try it out. But if the answer is no, I guess I will have to be contempt with RTTS even though I still cannot for the life of me understand the logic of SDS that prevents you from starting the game being able to play ever pitch (you have to wait for your first plate appearance or first fielding attempt before you can enter this mode).

PS: my preferred way playing ever pitch does take a time commitment and will not be for everyone. However for me I look for authentic experiences on emulating the game of baseball versus all these arcade styles of the game I see on YouTube with RTTS players playing 5 minute games and making it to the Majors after only one week of the game being released. But that's just me and perhaps I am in the extreme minority.
