    Re: Stealing

I think I’m 1 for 8 stealing bases so far. Clearly I suck at it.

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

I pre-load my steals and always get a terrible jump. I'm 0 or 6 with Cesar Hernandez. My only successful steal was because the pitch was in the dirt.

I struggled in spring training but I'm 22 for 27 (81%) so far in franchise. I do have a lot of fast guys and I tweaked the slider up for stealing ability and up slightly for frequency (and taken CPU pickoffs down to zero, which means they throw over about as often as in real life, instead of like 5 times in a row).

I use a one extra step lead most of the time and preload the steal with pointing at the runner + L2, and crucially I've found it's much harder to steal on the first couple pitches of the at-bat since they're more likely to pitch out or slide step.

It's had the nice side effect of making the computer attempt to steal more often, and it's hard to throw their fast guys out but possible, especially if I time a slide-step right.

I always "pre-load" the steal and it's always worked pretty well for me forever. But this year, every guy gets a TERRIBLE jump. They stay flat-footed almost until the pitcher releases the ball, so they have no shot at being safe.

I have never tried to time the steal and take off manually myself. I don't even know how to do it! Do we just press L2 as soon as the pitcher starts his windup?

With pickoffs at 0, will the CPU throw over if you take an egregious lead (like 3 steps)?

Yes. They'll throw over, and still pick you off, no matter what the slider is. Setting it to zero, or close to it, just brings it closer to reality as the other poster said.

I now I have mine one notch above zero, and the first time I tried to lead off today, AS SOON as I made one half step beyond the bag, and as the pitcher was about to start his windup, he snapped off a throw to first and tagged my guy out.

However, there were several other situations where I was able to get a realistic lead once he was into his motion or close to it, and made fair attempts to steal. On those attempts, I think I was 2/3.

I had the same experience with the runner remaining stationary until I cranked up stealing ability and mostly stuck to guys with good stealing ratings.

To have the runner take off manually you hold L2 and as soon as you release it they take off. But this year, in my experience, the runner still delays after you release L2 making that feature useless.

If that's the case, that might be a bug. I'll have to test for myself. I haven't tried stealing much because since 17 I've been terrible at stealing off the CPU, but I always just tapped L2 before the pitch, never held and released.

The delay was there last year, too. It's about half a second that they don't move after you release L2. I filled a bug report last year but nothing ever came from it

Has anyone noticed that the audible alert when an attempted steal is happening has gotten louder? Sure makes it easier to know when a runner is going. Did that happen in a patch or because I have my sound setup on surround?

I've given up and just go into Quick Manage when I want to steal.

                            Re: Stealing

Here is my best tip for stealing. There's a process I follow.

                            1. Pause the game before you want to attempt a steal.
                            2. Locate the nearest mobile phone or desktop computer.
                            3. Open the email client on the device.
                            4. Send an email to [email protected] detailing the need to overhaul steals both offensively and defensively.
                            5. Resume the game and realize that you shouldn't steal.
                            6. Hit into a double play.
                            7. Repeat steps 1-6 every time you feel like stealing.

Joking aside though, it really does need to be redone. Loading is just about a surefire out even on guys with really long deliveries. Regular button pressing is ok, but seems to be heavily skewed to the CPU on HOF and above and to the player on Veteran and below.

I'm not sure, but it seems like the flat-footed runner and the flat-footed second baseman watching the floater float past his head are related somehow...

                              Re: Stealing

I'm playing on All Star, with the throws to first tuned to zero on the slider, and I often have games where AS SOON as I step off the bag, the pitcher will snap off a throw and nail me out.

I also had two different attempts today where my runner CLEARLY made it to the bag ahead of the tag when everything went right, and yet he was still called out. I've played 55 games, and have yet to have a steal work when they throw to second unless the throw is high or to the side. If its to the bag, I'm always out.

As others have said, unless its a changeup in the dirt, the odds are really against you. And even then its no guarantee.

                                Re: Stealing

So, I've gone ahead and turned the slider for throws to first to zero, the slider for steal ability to MAX, and increased the base runner speed. After doing all of that, now if I time everything right AND get a good pitch, then my best base stealers are able to get the job done at about the right frequency on All Star Plus.

Shouldn't need to be this complicated, though.
